I was in a nursing home trying to recover from a stroke when he died. It was a bad year, my very favorite artist, ever. Played his music from the time I was a little kid. Best there ever was.
This man could write a song about anything and have it make a HIT. We will never have a Merle Haggard. We do have his children Marty, Noel, and Ben. They are all good. Keep it up boys! Love you!
I guess you're right.I lost my beautiful wife and I still can't believe its over when that final door is closed. This is a song only the Hagg knows how to sing it.Thanks for posting.Eric.
I love this song and so did my mom! She would sing this song to her grandsons to wake them up in the morning for school or work. they still talk about it and laugh as they will always remember their grandma for this reason and her sense of humour. Thanks for the memories!
I have loved this song since I was 15 years old and I'm now 58. Everytime I ask someone about it they say they have never heard of it. CRAZY I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE IT PLAYED AT MY FUNERAL BUT I GUESS THAT WOULDN'T BE VERY APPROPRIATE LOL
Me and My dad got to see merle in concert in 2011 what an awesome concert me and my dad talked to his bus driver and he gavs us pictures of merle right off his bus !!!!
I stumbled on this beautiful song about a year ago when I was searching for Kern River. I love both of them but can't find them on any album. Surprised I had never heard these before. They are much prettier than some of his biggies. Love the Hag's music. Always good for dancing.
We will miss this great country artist! He was the BEST! Love his music...all of it! May he rest now! He is in Heaven now with my darling Jim. Janelle in Houston
FANTASTIC on his fiddle also .Makes me cry .l LOVE this song from Merle.ll only wish I could have woken up next to him .He sounds heartbroken in this song. ELIZABETH SCOTLAND xxxx
I got to ride with this country legend on his private train coach along with John Madden in 1982, what a time I had with the Hag. I still have the picture he autographed for me hanging on my wall. I was 20yrs old then, I got to sing with Merle Haggard.
A great song off Merle's 1980 album called The Way I am. It really amazing what different scenarios people can pull out of a song...cracks me up..I just thinks it's just another one of Merle's Homers..awesome
Wow! This song which I have never heard Merle do, just popped up after his great "Holding Things Together" (one of his many best). Great sound. He was right up there with the greatest. Only saw him once live and will never forget it.
Never understood why this song didn't do better on the charts. It's always been my most favorite song of his. Love you Merle. So sorry you're gone from this earth but I feel sure you're singing with the angels now.
This is not about some one dying. Hag wrote when his attempt to keep marriage to Leona Williams. She spoke to Emery about this attempt to save marriage to Merle. He didn't take it well 4:04
You know what it is as a country music fan since the 60's as a child. I've just come to the conclusion about whats changed in country music its the voice the old greats like Merle and George Charley Pride their voices were instruments you don't need a great singing voice nowadays to sing country music because they drowned it out by the instruments. Today's country music would pass for Rock in the 70's if you don't believe me? go listen to The Eagles Lying eyes or Take it to the limit any of those songs then play any modern country artist, I'll guarantee you the modern country song will sound more upbeat than the 70's rock.
Robert Reed Agreed. Songwriting's a big part of the problem too. Not so much that the songwriters aren't as good, I think it's more that what they're asked to do by the producers and labels is so doggone limited. "Girl, you are so hot, this is an awesome night, I just want to get in your pants here in this cornfield" probably covers about 50% of today's "country" tunes. "I'm so lucky, my life is great, and I'm so in love with my wife" maybe another 20%. "Shucks, I'm country through and through, and I drive a big ol' truck, and I love my momma and the little town I'm from" maybe another 20%. That's 90% of the tunes, right there. I mean, whatever else you can say about it, it's as boring as watching paint dry.... in winter.
Such CLASS on his own his VOICE his own music he wrote with truth an honesty yes The working man at his best . Sooo GREAT he was whom sat an example for others to follow in his guidance with country music. Great entertainer an perfomer with the help of his band The strangers an Bonnie his ex wife whom he still loves an good friends now as his only backup female singer. He still adores Bonnie til the day she passed 😢😢😢 Noone will ever take Merles place . Thank you lord for the gift you have given this man a genius in his own right. Hirena New ZEALAND ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
The beauty in this song is its double meaning, to someone who has been in a loveless relationship with someone who you know is going to leave this song has a meaning, but also to someone who has had the misfortune of waking up next to their partner who has passed away it has a another meaning, This song makes me think of the last of couple of months living with my ex wife, but could just as easily be about an older person waking up to find their husband/wife dead in bed. Either way Merle has a way of just ripping your heart with every breath of his voice, this is true genius and a brilliant interpreter of American music.
It's1975 Sunday morning just after church. I'm six years old and dad is preparing a BBQ on the grill. He throws the baseball around with my brother and I a bit.
