Ragnar Kjartansson, The Visitors Complete Video

  • As I meandered around nine large video screens, I experienced Ragnar Kjartansson's “The Visitors” as a series of overlapping sounds and images, a shifting musical collage. This montage pays tribute to the consummate artistry of these talented musicians in weaving nine distinctive sounds into a mesmerizing musical tapestry.
Recorded live in an active museum setting, the video takes on an inevitable ad-hoc quality, with random "visitors" contributing to the imagery. But I'm pleased with the audio. The layering of three synchronized audio tracks adds an interesting depth to the sound. It's my hope to upgrade the video with better footage over time, perhaps with the help of other visitors to this extraordinary exhibit.

Same. My wife and I went to hear the Devon Turnbull audio system. Listened to it for 2 hours. Walked around and stumbled upon this video exhibit, maybe 10 minutes after starting. Took us another 5-10 minutes to figure out what was going on, stayed for the remainder of the piece, sat through it again in it's entirety in the middle of the room.

Alone, in a city that’s not mine, a little confused and little sad. I sat in this dark room surrounded and lit by amazing and grand picture. I experienced all of these separate instruments swell into the most beautiful compositions over the course of an hour. After, I wandered golden gate park aimlessly for hours and thought about years worth of… well thoughts lol. it really is an experience I am never gonna forget.
I love art for how normal it makes me feel :)

mia km: Another motivation of mine in making this video is to show how each musician contributes to the ensemble, to better understand (for myself) the strands that make up this complex musical tapestry. I'm about to embark on a sequel, "The Visitors - Take II", that will take this idea to a more granular level. To that end, I have made complete recordings of 5 of the 9 screens. I'm reaching out to my viewers to send me video clips that they may have taken of the remaining four screens, namely: Shahzad Ismaily (the banjo player), Ólafur Jónsson (the guitarist by the bed), Þorvaldur Gröndal (the drummer) and The Rokeby Choir (the porch singers.) Couldn’t stop bursting my tear or joy, almost i felt like i had a retreat. I was looking for buying vinyl or listening whole song, but this is the only place that I can keep listening this beautiful song. So thank you so much. And reading all the comments gives me feeling of universal love, compassion. I hope more people can sew this show in person and share the love.

I just saw this as SFMOMA today, and went in expecting nothing and came away with so many emotions... My favourite moment is at 47:00, when the one pianist sees his friend entering the room, and his face lights up in a smile that just says "I'm so glad to see you, friend" and the rest of the room one-by-one does the same... It captures the essence of what the whole art installation is trying to convey.

Reading the comments here gives my soul joy. I and my wife saw it in Boston a couple years ago and, like many of you, found it to be an unexpected spiritual journey that has resonated inside me ever since. Knowing that it touched so many others gives me a connection in a sometimes "disconnected" world and I feel like a group of little children that have all found a secret garden.

FEMININE WAYS (by Ásdís Sif Gunnarsdóttir)
    A pink rose
    In the glittery frost
    A diamond heart
    And the orange red fire
    Once again I fall into
    My feminine ways
You protect the world from me
As if I’m the only one who’s cruel
    You’ve taken me

First time I saw it was at the Frist Museum in Nashville in Christmas time in 2016, and I went into it without knowing what it was and was just captivated by it, could not get it out of my head for the longest time and thought I would never see it again. Then in 2018, I went to The Broad in LA, without knowing it was there, I heard something and walked into the room and I just got extremely ecstatic, and shook my friend and told him "THIS IS MY FAVOURITE!!!!!" and then just stayed there for a looonnnnggg time.

I’m walking the Camino de Santiago, over 630km from Lisbon. Yesterday, almost at the end of a grueling, painful, hot day, something makes me stop at the monastery in Coímbra. And there it was. I stood in a huge beautiful dark space, an almost holy atmosphere, and forgot how much my feet hurt and my backpack and the heat. I stood there and wept, and found a lightness that I thought I left behind dozens of kilometers ago ago. This was an absolutely magical experience. Suddenly, I felt refreshed, energized even, and without problems I visited the rest of the exhibition before walking to my hostel, even taking a slightly longer route. I cannot express how grateful I am for this.

Seen this Bilbao. So unbelievable wonderful. So impressive, so unique, walking around choosing the part you listen more. Because of the nine sources of music, you will never hear the same version. This is the most weird version of art, Your moves are part of the art, never will anyone see your version of this art. This was the most impressive art i have ever seen

I just experienced this today and i was absolutely mesmerized all the way through. I ended up staying for over 40 minutes I was told (though it felt much shorter). I felt that i was transported... I didn’t even leave the room until the screens started turning off one by one. The voices were all so beautiful and full of emotion. The music was so moving and raw. I could have stayed in there all day. I felt that it would lull me to sleep or bring me to tears or both. I desperately wanted to pull out my phone to record it, to try to capture every bit of it that I possibly could, but i instead decided to simply allow myself to absorb it all. I paced between all of the screens because I didn’t want to miss a single moment. I could go on and on and on... this masterpiece just really moved me and I’m so grateful that i had the opportunity to immerse myself within it. Thank you thank you thank you.

I'm not sure how the screens were set up at the Broad, but at the SFMOMA, it was impossible to see all the screens simultaneously. It was this urge to know what each musician was doing at the moment that drove me to go back to record it three times and piece together this montage. Glad you enjoyed it.

I'm about to embark on a sequel, "The Visitors - Take II", that will take this idea to a more granular level. To that end, I have made complete recordings of 5 of the 9 screens. Yeah, LA is a bit far for me too. But there are some video moments here and there that I really want to fill in: Davíð Þór Jónsson's and Kjartan Sveinsson's pizzicato movements on the grand pianos, random sounds from Ragnar's bathtub, and the amazing high notes from Gyða Valtýsdóttir's cello come to mind. I think they really add richness and complexity to this highly nuanced composition.

I saw this years ago at Cleveland MOCA. A video cannot capture the extraordinary experience, the emotions and the magic of being immersed in total darkness, surrounded by all those screens, wandering from one to the other as if you were going from room to room in the house where the musicians were playing, the music slowly growing and entering your soul, taking you to another dimension. I shall never forget it.

Just saw this at the SFMOMA. Watching it on TH-cam doesn’t do it justice. At one point (when they really built up the lines about the stars exploding all around) it was such an overwhelming experience. Being surrounding by the sound and images made me want to get back into playing music regularly (which I haven’t done since covid, not in a large ensemble anyhow).
If you get a chance to see the installation at a museum I’d definitely recommend it. It was only five extra dollars and it was def worth it.

I went to the ICA in Boston a couple days ago. It was my 30th birthday and I cried so hard in the dark room. I stayed for the whole 64 minutes and I couldn't leave. It hit me hard since a close friend of mine introduced me to Mum and Sigur Ros in my early 20's. I also haven't heard live music since the start of the pandemic--it felt like the closest live performance I have had in awhile. The simplicity of the song and the repetitions made me reflect on the fragility of life in our current moment of perpetual grief.

Totally agree. It's when you sit through the whole thing that the overall impact sinks in.

Haunting, lovely melody. Lucky enough to see this both at the Broad and at Phoenix Art Museum.
A museum security guard on duty shared the lyrics with me
" Once again I fall into, my feminine ways."

Anneliese Mougharbel: One of my motivations in making this video is to show how each musician contributes to the ensemble, to better understand (for myself) the strands that make up this complex musical tapestry. I'm about to embark on a sequel, "The Visitors - Take II", that will take this idea to a more granular level. To that end, I have made complete recordings of 5 of the 9 screens. I'm reaching out to my viewers to send me video clips that they may have taken of the remaining four screens, namely: Shahzad Ismaily (the banjo player), Ólafur Jónsson (the guitarist by the bed), Þorvaldur Gröndal (the drummer) and The Rokeby Choir (the porch singers.) Clips that make it to the final cut will be acknowledged. My email is listed at the end of the video. Thanks for your consideration.

I had a shitty weekend. TH-cam suggested me this piece I have seen twice almost 10 years ago in Montreal. This has been a crucial experience for me. It contributed to a long-last reflexion that ended up seeing me focusing myself on creative work. In this, I have the support of my longtime partner/girlfriend/wife and my beautiful 8 year-old daughter.
When I saw this back then, I remember telling myself, with tears in my eyes, the proverbial: I could die right now…. Nowadays, for some reasons, I sorta feel that I only have a few more moments to live on this plane of existence. Don’t know why. I don’t seem to be able to get rid of this intuition. I also feel that I have many unfinished businesses. Especially, I don’t want leave my Loves… I’m not ready.
So many people have died around me in the last decade or so. This unique, brilliant, cruel art piece reflects exactly on how life passes. I needed to cry.

I was in this hall in Helsinki and listened to this music, saw these screens, and it's amazing! Listening to this surround sound, looking at the musicians, you want to live, love and hug your friends. Thank you, it's unforgettable!!!

Nice: "...you want to live, love and hug your friends." And realize that while we may march to our own tune, we are part of a cosmic ensemble.

Saw this multiple times at The Broad, always made sure to go first thing and have the room to myself. It’s close to a transcendental experience.

Much the same as below comments. Hands down the best and most powerful piece of art I’ve ever experienced. I watched it 3 times in a row at the Kiasma in Helsinki.

I finally made it to the ICA myself last Thursday! The production quality was awesome.

I remember seeing this in Dallas at an art museum when I was in high school, I just wanted to sit there and sob. This was something I would always think about.

I begrudgingly went to the ICA in Boston one night. I had really just given up on contemporary art at that point. I was completely astounded, ultimately revitalized.
