It happened in the 70s, I assume none of you were around for that decade because back then things were MUCH different from how they are today. My girlfriend (now wife) was once in an unfamiliar place (in the days before smart phones) and running low on gas. She wasnt sure where to go so she called me. As I was looking it up online trying to pinpoint her location some guys pulled up n ended up offering to lead her to a gas station. She followed them, on fumes, to presumably a gas station. Eventually, they pulled into a trailer park.... Luckily we were still on the phone, I told her to run.... Get far away etc.... Luckily i had found the location, and told her how to get to a gas station. I memorized what I could and hopped in my truck. To fly in her direction. They followed her but luckily her fuel held out until she made it to a gas station where they gave up. I arrived shortly after.... Close to a disaster.
It was scary... like... thats EXACTLY what I feared would happen. I wasn't even surprised. I tried telling myself people are better than that, I'm just being paranoid etc.... lesson learned. People are not better than that. Sometimes it's better to be paranoid and risk offending someone to ensure safety.

Cool hiking story Here is one of my own, Take it for what is worth, when I was a young man over 40 years ago I was really into going into the mountains to hunt fossils. I had heard rumors about a cash of trilobite fossils in the foot hills of the James river. I'd never been there. Before going any further I should I get lost in a broom closet so I have a habit of braking off branches of trees and stabbing them into the ground within site of the last so I can find my way back to my car. I know I know go buy a compass right? My way had always worked and would let me go back the next weekend to the same spot where I have hopefully found a cash of fossils. The hills were back then littered with my vertical branches markers. On this particular trip armed with my trusty rock breaking hammer I had walked more than 3 times my normal distance with out finding a damn thing. Then in the water under a foot deep I saw the familiar outline of a trilobite head. Freaking YES! about damn time! Happy in my findings I started cracking every rock in site and low and behold more goodies! In my glee I totally forgot the time until I noticed it was getting dark, Awe shit! No supplies other than a half gallon of water I carried cause it just freaking hot and humid in Virginia during summer. I thought in a mental picture I can remember where all my stakes are and even in the dark I can get back. Wrong! I found 2 of them then gave up on finding the next. Tired as hell and carrying a sack of fossils "which are tied to my hip with my water on the other side." I decided just to find a clear spot and sleep till day break and maybe go back and find more goodies and hoped no bears would eat me. When I woke my fossils and water was gone. Being a really lite sleeper this freaked me out. I jumped up looking around for my stuff. Then after a few minutes I walked back to the river and started going back down and it struck me that all my stakes are gone. In my head thinking "I'll see one soon and find my path back to the car. I never found a single one, I was very creep out by this point. In my head I was thinking "well at least I have a fresh water river when I get thirsty" no food but clean water and if I keep going I will find someone, anyone. I walked for about 6 hours then found my bearings and knew where my car was. Then I got to the drivers door of my car hammered in my door was a plank with fresh paint "Do not come back!"
That's crazy. You probably stumbled close to a moonshine or meth operation. Or some crazy loner unabomber type.. At least they didn't get violent, but that's still scary as hell. Story #2 seized my heart, as it took place in my home state. Never been to the Sipsey Wilderness, but now I definitely won't. Just the knowledge that we actually have “Deliverance” crazies in our woods is...chilling, to say the least.
Tell me about it! I'm from AL also and I just listened to Lazy tell a crazy story that happened in montevallo then this! But man don't miss out on the beauty of Sipsey. It's wonderful, has hundreds of waterfalls and has some parts of the wilderness that man probably hasn't even stepped. Plus you got a better chance of getting hurt from falling, getting lost or snakes waay before you run into crazies.

When camping use the addition of people by hours from civilization principle: 1 hour from civilization or less: Two people or more. 2 hours from civilization: Three people or more. 3 hours from civilization: Four people etc... This would be time it takes to travel on back roads to civilization rather than actual distance. Also, always go armed and now you why.
damn that second one freak me out, mainly because I live in Alabama. can definitely be quite scary place sometimes because we still have a lot of deep forests and abandoned houses looking like something out of Texas Chainsaw Massacre or wrong turn. it would scare me even as a kid, I even remember being forced on a camping trip once where we were out in the middle of nowhere in a mesh tent. (nice picking out the tent mom! that practically screams "kill me please!" )
I don't go camping in the wilderness unless I'm with a group and someone has a weapon. Once we were camping in the Ozarks and this weird dude who appeared to be living out of his van came into our primitive campground. He looked sketchy and wouldn't speak to anyone. Just stared. None of us felt comfortable going to sleep with him in the vicinity so two of our camping buddies went to have a friendly chat with him. One was in law enforcement and one was military. They both were armed and let him know. I'm not sure what else they said. He packed up and left before the day was out.
Yeah it's really sad that people can't feel safe out there. I know it's not a wilderness experience, but you could do what I do and sometimes just camp in a nice campground in either a national or state park. There are always other campers around - families, older people, etc. It feels safe and during the day you can still hike and enjoy nature. But at night you have the reassurance of people nearby. Plus park rangers are always checking in.

This would be a great option for someone like me who hikes in the woods listening to podcasts, such as Jim Harold's Campfire true ghost stories. I live in the middle of the woods and I go hiking out in the middle of nowhere because my neighbors all own hundreds of achers and I've lived here since I was 11, so despite being almost a legal adult I'm still the "little new kid" who went around and asked very politely if I can walk on their property. because of this, I can go absolutely anywhere I want for as long as I could possibly ever manage to walk in every direction. I've seen some weird stuff.

As an avid backpacking guide through Colorado, I love this kind of stories to tell around the fire to my group! Ive got a couple of creepy stories from camping as well.
I have a really true and fucked up story that happened to me and its not totally blown outta proportion but its still a little un believeable, ill make it short... since no one is probably gonna read this. Me and my friend nick were riding quads in the woods not terribly deep, but he lives in a fairly secluded neighborhood. We were just heading back after having a little to drink😉 but not anywhere close enough to cause any form of hallucinations. And as we were approaching the end of our journey, speeding through the woods we noticed to figures (female) just standing there in the middle of our path looking at us and it was about 8:00pm so it was just dark enough to seclude their faces so we quickly changed our route and took a hard left so we wouldnt run them over and as we were exiting we hauled ass outta there afraid these "girls" would call the police but as we looked back they were so fucking close to us just walking towards us so we increased speed and hauled ass outta there.
It was only 5-6 minutes b4 we reached nicks atv shed which was about 150 yards from his house. We weren't afraid especially because I was a weapon junky and had about 4 knives and a surpessed uzi straped to my back, so we took our time loading the machines into the shed to call it a night figuring these "girls" would call the police. But as we shut the doors to the shed to lock up Nick noticed them in the bushes, they werent very discrete either just watching us. Both me and nick found that very strange but once again were in no way feeling threatened so we insulted them(we can both be dicks sometimes 😂) "fuck you creepy bitchs", or "want dick or somethin" and it just continued but they never said anything back or approached us so I went over there with the flashlight while nick locked up the shed but when i went around the corner they were gone and the only thing there near the bush was a bottle of perrier water and a small bottle of makers mark we left in the woods a few hours...

Man I'm really addicted to these, it's like I didn't hear enough stories around the campfire when I was younger and I'm suddenly hearing better ones here on TH-cam.
Story #2 seized my heart, as it took place in my home state. Never been to the Sipsey Wilderness, but now I definitely won't. Just the knowledge that we actually have “Deliverance” crazies in our woods is...chilling, to say the least.
Tell me about it! I'm from AL also and I just listened to Lazy tell a crazy story that happened in montevallo then this! But man don't miss out on the beauty of Sipsey. It's wonderful, has hundreds of waterfalls and has some parts of the wilderness that man probably hasn't even stepped. Plus you got a better chance of getting hurt from falling, getting lost or snakes waay before you run into crazies.

When camping use the addition of people by hours from civilization principle:
1 hour from civilization or less: Two people or more.
2 hours from civilization: Three people or more.
3 hours from civilization: Four people etc...
This would be time it takes to travel on back roads to civilization rather than actual distance. Also, always go armed and now you why.
damn that second one freak me out, mainly because I live in Alabama. can definitely be quite scary place sometimes because we still have a lot of deep forests and abandoned houses looking like something out of Texas Chainsaw Massacre or wrong turn. it would scare me even as a kid, I even remember being forced on a camping trip once where we were out in the middle of nowhere in a mesh tent. (nice picking out the tent mom! that practically screams "kill me please!" )

I don't go camping in the wilderness unless I'm with a group and someone has a weapon. Once we were camping in the Ozarks and this weird dude who appeared to be living out of his van came into our primitive campground. He looked sketchy and wouldn't speak to anyone. Just stared. None of us felt comfortable going to sleep with him in the vicinity so two of our camping buddies went to have a friendly chat with him. One was in law enforcement and one was military. They both were armed and let him know. I'm not sure what else they said. He packed up and left before the day was out.
Yeah it's really sad that people can't feel safe out there. I know it's not a wilderness experience, but you could do what I do and sometimes just camp in a nice campground in either a national or state park. There are always other campers around - families, older people, etc. It feels safe and during the day you can still hike and enjoy nature. But at night you have the reassurance of people nearby. Plus park rangers are always checking in.

Thanks for your stories. Are your stories available in a Podcast? I searched Apple without any luck. This would be a great option for someone like me who hikes in the woods listening to podcasts, such as Jim Harold's Campfire true ghost stories. Finding your TH-cam channel has opened up a lot of new stories for me. A podcast version would be much more convenient and probably uses a fraction of the data. Just a suggestion. Thanks again.

I live in the middle of the woods and I go hiking out in the middle of nowhere because my neighbors all own hundreds of achers and I've lived here since I was 11, so despite being almost a legal adult I'm still the "little new kid" who went around and asked very politely if I can walk on their property. because of this, I can go absolutely anywhere I want for as long as I could possibly ever manage to walk in every direction. I've seen some weird stuff.

I have a really true and fucked up story that happened to me and its not totally blown outta proportion but its still a little un believeable, ill make it short... since no one is probably gonna read this. Me and my friend nick were riding quads in the woods not terribly deep, but he lives in a fairly secluded neighborhood. We were just heading back after having a little to drink😉 but not anywhere close enough to cause any form of hallucinations. And as we were approaching the end of our journey, speeding through the woods we noticed to figures (female) just standing there in the middle of our path looking at us and it was about 8:00pm so it was just dark enough to seclude their faces so we quickly changed our route and took a hard left so we wouldnt run them over and as we were exiting we hauled ass outta there afraid these "girls" would call the police but as we looked back they were so fucking close to us just walking towards us so we increased speed and hauled ass outta there.
It was only 5-6 minutes b4 we reached nicks atv shed which was about 150 yards from his house. We weren't afraid especially because I was a weapon junky and had about 4 knives and a surpessed uzi straped to my back, so we took our time loading the machines into the shed to call it a night figuring these "girls" would call the police. But as we shut the doors to the shed to lock up Nick noticed them in the bushes, they werent very discrete either just watching us. Both me and nick found that very strange but once again were in no way feeling threatened so we insulted them(we can both be dicks sometimes 😂) "fuck you creepy bitchs", or "want dick or somethin" and it just continued but they never said anything back or approached us so I went over there with the flashlight while nick locked up the shed but when i went around the corner they were gone and the only thing there near the bush was a bottle of perrier water and a small bottle of makers mark we left in the woods a few hours...
