    I am from America. As I turn 75 yoa, and am losing my battle with inoperable cancer, I listen to Finlandia daily. It always brings tears to my eyes, which I believe cleanses one's soul. This song is about freedom and the perseverance of self governance no matter how difficult it might get sometimes. This might encapsulate the Finnish "SISU" mentality. I had the privilege to work for a Finnish mining technology company out of the South African office and believe me, they are a great nation. They appear to be a boring people but once you get under their skin and get accepted in their social circle, you are bonded for life. Did 4 tours in Finland, Helsinki, (Espoo) and Tornio up north. • @coosoorlog
      @coosoorlog 7 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      the lyrics were written over 40 years afterwards, during which time Finland had had it's first parliamentary elections under russian rule, then gained independence, fought civil war, experienced other political turmoil and gradual stabilization and democratic development, and then winter war started and the lyrics were written at the end of that war. they're good lyrics and do reflect the spirit of the music and its original intent but often people misunderstand the historical context.
      reminds me of the star-spangled banner, which was written in 1814 (during the war of 1812); people generally think the lyrics refer to the war of independence (and the surely can, and practically do but not originally) but they were written about a certain battle in the war of 1812.

    Even though the english lyrics shown here in the video somewhat represent what is being said, the official translation by Keith Bosley shows the lyrical beauty of Finlandia pretty well. It always brings tears to my eyes when the singing starts.
    Finland, behold, thy daylight now is dawning,
    the threat of night has now been driven away.
    The skylark calls across the light of morning,
    the blue of heaven lets it have its way,
    and now the day the powers of night is scorning:
    thy daylight dawns, O Finland of ours!
    Finland, arise, and raise towards the highest
    thy head now crowned with mighty memory.
    Finland, arise, for to the world thou criest
    that thou hast thrown off thy slavery,
    beneath oppression´s yoke thou never liest.
    Thy morning´s come, O Finland of ours!

Torvalds freed me from unbearable Windows to enjoy computing. I will soon prepare a collection of my favorites in a memory card to be played at my death bed.
