    The best post rock synth with Hidrasynth

  • @metaspherz
    @metaspherz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    February 7th, 2021 will mark my 1-year anniversary with the Wavestate. I had pre-ordered it as soon as it was available and I received #187. So, I consider myself one of the first to own this magnificent beauty! I also own a Moog Grandmother, a Deepmind 12, and a Prophet DSI Rev2-16 that I use daily in my music studio. I have many other relic synths in storage like a Korg Triton and a Novation Supernova Kb, but my favorite one is the Wavestate. If I could only own one synth for the rest of my life there is no contest, it would be the Wavestate. I just wish that it had at least a 5-octave keyboard.
    That's a great list! But, you omitted 'Daylight Is Fading' which is one of my favorite ambient patches for ethereal beauty. Glad to see you using the joystick also. Most of the other videos ignore it. For ambient sounds, it helps to add a new dimension of possibilities. Thanks for your input it's helped me to discover a few new sounds that I'd overlooked. Another thing about the Wavestate that I really enjoy is that I can press just one key and it virtually comes alive with nuance and flavor that most other synths are not capable of without a lot of deep menu diving. The addition of the joystick twisting, crunching, morphing the sounds makes modulation possibilities nearly endless. The onboard special effects are great too. And it's all very intuitive right out of the box although it can get rather complex while menu diving. The Korg programmers outdid themselves with this one!

Remind me of some of the stuff I created using Uhe's Hive, which has a slightly harder edge than this synth, but can get into areas that are timbrally quite similar. Have to agree, it’s very unique and sounds great. The hydrasynth also sounds a bit harsh on youtube, but again in real life the top end is incredibly smooth, not harsh in the slightest. I was a bit concerned when I bought it but it’s silky smooth highs all the way which is great in a wavetable synth.

      It wasn’t a criticism of your vid, just a response to the above comment. I own a wavestate and it sounds great as does your vid. I was talking about the hydra because most wavetables are harsh by nature and youtube compression definitely makes them sound worse when not tamed by a filter, however it’s not the synth creating the harsh frequencies.

      @@apreviousseagle836 It does not provide sound manipulation, meaning sonic potential on level of subtractive, wavetable, FM/PD synthesis, it's sample based vector synthesis, so it's more like advanced sampler.
      And it is 4-part multitimbral, rare thing among today's hardware synthesizers to be multitimbral, even VSTs.

    These are beautiful sounds, thanks for the nice video! I was trying this out in the shop with my own headphones for comparison and found that it sounds a little thinner (but more open in high frequencies) compared to my Wavestation. Another thing I like on the original is, that I have two separate vector outputs in addition to the stereo outputs (3 and 4) for processing with effects. If Korg would enable the Wavestate to be loaded with your own samples, I would be intrigued to get one - but like this I found too many sounds unusable for me...

    • @johnmika6512
      @johnmika6512 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Wavestate sounds much better than the old Ensoniq gear. I still have my Ensoniq VFX, but have not played it in years. I tried to like the Fizmo but found the overall character of the sound to be annoyingly sterile and harsh. It was very hard to make it sound pretty. I would take a VFX, SD1 or TS1x any day over the Fizmo. I always wanted a TS10 or TS12 because I had a big EPS sample library with some really great sounds that you could load into these synths. The TS1x also had the DP4 effects processor and a really nice keyboard action.
      The Wavestate is comparable to a Prophet VS, which I also own. Dave Smith took the Prophet VS technology and developed the Wavestation after Sequential went out of business back in 1987.

      Good point. I got the Minilogue XD...and it's made of metal cover plate and heavy pots, for less money AND more electronics inside (4 full circuits)...AND now I just see that the XD is kind of a wavetable synth when you use the mod sequencer. It's not fare to compare these...but they could have built the WS like the XD... I also checked the online photos, what's inside a WS and there's not much in it, they use a meager Raspberry Pi processor (50 USD) while in the XD there're 4 pieces of analogue circuitry. My point is that they could have given it a better quality...and maybe an analogue filter. I love a metal surface plate on a synth, lol.

      These are all factory presets, you'll find them in the perform page listen alphabetically not on the set list patches.

    The only thing that is bugging me is the global reverb with this synth. It would be much more precise for sound design to add reverb only on certain layers. with individual sends.

    • @jedisid
      @jedisid  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah layered fx would be great, but I assume would add complexity and cost to this budget synth.

    • @marcusfreeweb
      @marcusfreeweb 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jedisid No, just give a send per layer, instead of a global reverb FX dry/wet mix. It would cost nothing. There is still only one reverb to process for all. But you could have an individual layer/part more upfront or more distant in the mix. The way Roland is doing it on the JD-Xi is great.

    How much menu diving do you have to do to create your own intricate patches like this? Other review videos make it look daunting.

    • @jedisid
      @jedisid  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sound creation will involve some menu diving yes, but that's understandable with the complexity of this thing, however performance is much less complicated with all the knobs and controls being on the front panel. It's not as bad as you think.

    • @Mibbzz
      @Mibbzz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have one and have definitely found it daunting. I think the menus could benefit from better UI. But once you get the hang of it it’s not so bad.

      Dont be led to believe that the korg wavestate is UNPLAYABLE. it will indeed take many years , hardship, mental breakdown ,around the clock practice, questioning your musical ability, crushing your musical talent, NO stretch of the imagination. you see the engine is complex, complex to the point that the engineers overengineered the device then korg marketed the wavestate not for profit but to as they put it " to stump and annihilate the synth player into quitting" in other words korg lives for the negative reviews in online reviews or magazines or newspapers. they made the wavestate just for this purpose.
