Radio brought me here...then while searching I found Frasier. I've got the complete collection of Frasier but I never thought to look up that song till I heard the real one!
Thank you the eminent psychiatrists Dr Frasier and Dr Nile’s Crane for introducing me to Gilbert and Sullivan and hence bringing me here. Top notch indeed
My Mum took me to my very first G&S production. I was lucky enough for it to be The Mikado with John Reed playing Koko, I think the last time before he retired from performing. Even allowing for looking back with rose-tinted specs, I've never seen a better Koko and I don't think I ever will.
I remember they did a production of the Mikado when was in secondary school, my sister's friend was in it the rest of the school Was allowed to watch it

The late Stephen Sondheim owed a great debt to Gilbert and Sullivan. Their patter songs, with amazingly intricate rhymes and ratt a tatt pace, requiring singers to be on top of their game every moment, for every syllable?? He probably watched and listened to these. They are an utter joy, of course, but a real homage to that masterly art of singing and reciting...
How lovely that Sullivan chose to homage/pastiche his own, earlier, song! . . . Written 20 years before he contributed 'On a tree by a river' (aka 'Willow, tit-willow') to 'The Mikado': 'The Willow Song' was composed for a staging of Shakespeare's 'Othello' in the 1860s. It was set to the words - written in Shakespeare's text - of a song sung by the character of Desdemona. That 'serious' song - that then became famous in Victorian & Edwardian drawing rooms - pre-dates the 'Tit-willow' aria by 2 decades. Echoes from that song can be heard in this lovely solo, sung here to great effect by the character of Ko-Ko. Such a talented & versatile composer! 🎵 🎶 🎵 🎶
Now I feel just as sure as I'm sure that my name Isn't Willow, tit willow, tit willow That 'twas blighted affection that made him exclaim "Oh, willow, tit willow, tit willow" And if you remain callous and obdurate, I Shall perish as he did, and you will know why Though I probably shall not exclaim as I die "Oh, willow, tit willow, tit willow"

KoKo. Has there ever been a more selfless character in all literary history? Gives up his engagement to Yum Yum so Yum Yum and Nanki Poo can be happy, then saves Nanki Poo from either forced marriage or execution for denying Katisha by convincing her to marry him with a sad song about a suicidal bird.

There is no one like John Reed. He is the utter master of this and Mikado remains one of the most brilliant and original compositions of the stage.
Best. Ko-ko. Ever!

My brow is officially bespangled!
Imagine, a song about a heartbroken bird who commits suicide by drowning. They really don't make music like they used to.
this comment for the win
It isn't, it is about Koko committing emotional blackmail on Katisha to make her marry him, he makes up the story about the bird committing suicide.

I thought it was a cleverly veiled reason to say "tit" and "dick" for 2 and a half minutes.
Beautifully performed.. Brought a tear to my face. John Reed is and forever will be my favorite performer and singer..
Just beautiful!!
Mr.Busk my maths teacher did this performance in assembly in front of the whole school...Good on him.
kudos to the conductor, who does a fantastic job of following the singer.
Fantastic! One of the best versions I have ever seen.
And one of the few I have fully understood.
I grew up with Gilbert and Sullivan. My dad loved them. Doyle Carte used to come every summer and my dad always took me.
Genius -- and what a sly nod to Desdemona's famous "Willow Song" in Othello!
Please explain. This simple song is beyond me. What’s it about? What do the words mean

So much superb verbal, musical and theatrical skill employed in the service of comedy
