So i homeschool my kids and we are celebrating the Sabbath for part of school. (We are not Jewish but are Christians and are talking about creation) While researching Cholent recipes I stumbled across your video and you two are so amazing! 😊 Our Cholent is almost ready for lunch today! Oh wow. I'm Latvian. This reminds me of most Latvian foods honestly. We like rustic, flavourful, filling food. Traditionally we didn't have slow cookers, of course. Hehehe. But yeah, Latvian cuisine has lots of stews, soups, stuff like that, we couldn't care less how the food looks as long as it's tasty and full of flavour. That spice mix, like the powdered bullion, is in huge amounts in every home in Latvia. I, personally, don't like stews, but would for sure cook this for my family and they would absolutely love it.

I have made this recipe about once a month, every month now. I love changing up the flavors with taco seasons, chili seasonings, vinegars, and all sorts of concoctions(lots of garlic!). So happy to have a vegan version of this to make for my family!
This is great!! It would also be quite easy for kids to make too, apart from the chopping, so it's a great exercise for something like a 'other culture night' where the kids help make and eat a food from another culture. Also, I may just make it on a lazy weekend when I don't feel like cooking :)
The only time I heard of Cholent was on the PBS production, The Gefilte Fish Chronicles. Jewish sisters preparing for holiday feasting with their extended family. Mayim, you'd enjoy this show.
Cholant. Dear sweet cholant. My family had dinner every Saturday night at my Aunt Dinah’s house and the dinners were all pretty much the same. Except the one where, for the first time, my 3 year old cousin was presented with her own bowl of Cholant. Up to this point she had taken small spoonfuls from her mothers bowl. She had always eaten it before so her Mom thought “why not give her her own bowl tonight?!”. My cousin put the bowl in front of her, the baby leaned over, smelled it, and dry heaved like a cat full of fur. It was awesome!! Well, I thought it was awesome. Thanks for the memories! I might have to make a pot tomorrow just for old time’s sake.
