  • A master of his art, House & Garden's Designer of the Year Philip Hooper studied to be an architect and later learned his trade as an interior designer with the legendary John Stefanidis. His knowledge of architecture, design and decorating is second to none. He joined Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler nearly 20 years ago juggles projects as diverse as an über-modern ski chalet in Canada and a classical-style newbuild in the Home Counties with equal skill and flair. A continual quest to search out the best local craftspeople to work with - whether in Whistler, London or Marrakech - ensures his interiors are always outstanding in quality. His own country home is his laboratory. A warm, interesting, constantly evolving work in progress.

Not one single minimalist commenting on "too much stuff for my taste" YET 😁. Just love his house...no grey or white in sight. Bold, colourful, characterful and beautiful. That yellow just oozes sunshine...all the colours are just wonderful!

Good design is good design, regardless of the style. You have to be open to all types of esthetics, even if not your own, you can always see something interesting. Though not a minimalist be any means, I do love contemporary design and architecture. That shouldn’t mean I can’t enjoy spending time in a space like this. Beautiful fabrics, colors, great placement of furniture and objects, and the way pictures are hung and positioned is just spectacular. Plus…let’s not forget the lovely light and that staircase!

Yes. ... there's no eighteen shades of grey, ( which , I like the colour, but let's be honest here,... it's everywhere today ) I adore colour ,in art, pillows, rugs and some furnishings ... although my own large pieces are mostly cream, soft white.. there's colours that I love ,to offset that, and I am NOT a minimalist, ... 🙂😊

First thing I noticed was he broke the rules today's decorators cry out, "make your rooms flow, paint them the same color." Although his colors wouldn't be my I I appreciated their depth and the outside environment they would be counterbalancing. I also loved his reverence for the designers and the work all the craftsmen put into their creations. Thank you House & Gardens for sharing these wonderful interviews with us!

What a lovely collection of thrift products. Philip Hooper has been so lucky with many of his items like the fortuny curtains and bedspread as well as the other curtains on ebay. And that tapestry..... what a find. I love hunting for antique finds, it is awesome when you get a beautiful or valuable piece at a bargain for your home. Charming home with the different colours....x

“Self edit. Never be satisfied.” Wise words, so nice to hear!
I now feel better about retiring some pieces while buying more on eBay for my large Art Glass collection, and I was feeling badly about it. Displaying too many makes the place look like a store. Taste evolves, better pieces or different artists are discovered, room colors can change, etc. Trimming can become a sad necessity. Tough love!

.... This was just wonderful.... but too short , lol. Loved seeing no grey walls, grey furniture... I adore colour in a room, as long as it's cohesive , isn't terribly overpowering... this hit the mark. Lovely. And that fireplace!! Ohhhh my. ( swoon ) .

That yellow. My mother would have been pleased. The color, and intensity was in her living and dinning room. Bravo. She received so many compliment; although, prefaced by the statement ...I would not...but I love it, and then more sincere compliments. Several friends actually copied her; imitation is truly the sincerest form of flattery.
I am immediately going on eBay for drapes.👍

What a lovely, tasteful home ! Yellow is an extremely tricky colour to use and it is beautifully done -yes, with the blue drapery - I wonder if the colour was a specifically mixed yellow -or straight out of a paint can? Wonderful home and wishing you many enjoyable years to come living in this home !

Mr David Nicholls, deputy editor of ‘House and Garden’ (UK), designed a pictograph of stick-figure corpses, arranged in a numbered grid of equal columns and rows, on a piece of paper. He then took out a pencil, filled in the lines between the bodies to outline a Swastika shape, and laughed: “This game is called connect the dead Jews!”
It was like his “party trick”, with the sole intention being to invoke maximal discomfort. And that’s the kind of man who’s rating the carnal suppleness of your silk bedsheets.
