For me, the chemistry between Heather and Cynthia was the best thing about this particular production. We all have our favorite Celies and Shugs, and that's all good. But there was something very special about the *combination* of Heather and Cynthia. They both became something more on that stage together.
To me, Heather as Shug was so over protective, loving (even in love & attracted to) to her, and gentle toward Cynthia as Cely.
Her turning that hum into a kiss on the head was too good
I’ve been feeling depressed and at my lowest. Over 10k in debt, no job, feeling ugly... gay! In a pandemic! My anxiety is off the rails. I played this over and over for the part when heather hugs Cynthia. I just want someone to hug me like that.

In the book the late great Alice Walker knew what she was doing. These women shared that bond that was emotional and that manifested itself into a physical love. Tho they didn’t end up together it was known that they were a couple. I applauded the musical for bringing this into the forefront and staying true to the book. The movie was excellent but the musical was magic. I loved it. It told the story beautifully.
