  • The 2019 VW Atlas is truly a large people mover. Volkswagen wanted a spacious and practical option for a 3 row SUV with room for people as well as cargo. Despite being less than 200'' in length, it's interior dimensions show that it was careful thought out to provide as much as it does. This base S 2.0T model is the low end of the spectrum, but of there are several variants of the SE, SEL, R-line, and SEL Premium. I cover everything on this 2019 Volkswagen Atlas S but discuss features also available on other VW Atlas models. Let me know what you think below!

VW has learned some tough lessons in the American market. (1) Unlike Europeans, Americans resist seeing VW as a premium brand. (2) Americans want BIG vehicles, especially in terms of interior room. (3) Americans don't like cars with names that are unfamiliar and difficult to pronounce. Therefore, to be successful in the US, VW has to offer lots of interior room in a vehicle larger at a price lower than its European counterpart and with a name that's easy to pronounce and remember. That means the US gets the Atlas while the Europeans get the third generation Touareg. Considerably larger and less premium on this side of the Atlantic. I'm sure VW thought it had finally given Americans what they're looking for in a midsize SUV.
As a GTI owner when my wife and I were looking at midsize crossovers last year we considered the (then) newly introduced Atlas seriously. But while I'm a fan of VW's turbo 4 cylinder engines, I felt in a vehicle weighing over two tons that a naturally aspirated V6 is a better choice. Furthermore, we were looking at a trim level with some bells and whistles so that meant one of the upper trim levels where the VR6 was the only option. And because the family SUV is used for ski trips, AWD was a big plus.
On the positive side, the interior had the Germanic minimalist feel of all VW's. Passenger and cargo room was plentiful. If you're looking for a vehicle where three adults can fit (relatively) comfortably in the third row, it's among the best midsize SUV's available. And if you want a vehicle that can seat six or more passengers AND their gear for a trip, it's great. Only the GM twins (Traverse and Enclave) and the Dodge Durango are comparable. The VR6 isn't the most impressive V6 available in the midsize product space but it's smooth and quiet with good linear power delivery and time tested durability.
On the negative side we're a family of 3 and a half (My wife, our teenage daughter, myself, and a big dog). We find a third row of seats very convenient for chauffeuring a gaggle of teenage girls around town or going out with another family on a local trip when the alternative is taking two vehicles but it's not a necessity; it's an occasional benefit. The family SUV is my wife's daily driver the Atlas just seemed too damn big to her. But in the Atlas' defense it isn't as large as the Mazda CX-9 (by an inch or so in length) and offers an astounding 38% more overall cargo space and a third row of seats that can be used by something other than a small child or a bound and gagged hostage. If our family was more numerous or we needed to transport a basketball team on a regular basis, things might have been different.
The second major problem we encountered at the time was the fact that the 2018 Atlas had to be configured at the very highest trim level (SEL Premium) to have some of the most desirable features (e.g. leather upholstery, integrated navigation, digital cockpit). That pushed the asking price north of $50K. And when we were shopping that version of the Atlas was in very short supply. (None were available within 500 miles of Seattle.) To be fair, VW has since revised the lineup and some of those features are now available in lower priced trims but the digital cockpit and leather upholstery are still reserved for the highest trim.
We eventually purchased a top trim version of the KIA Sorento (SX-L). It matched or exceeded the features of the Atlas critical to us at an out-the-door price of $40K +TTL in a package that's almost 10 inches shorter than the Atlas. (Same overall passenger volume but less overall cargo capacity. But still more than the CX-9.) If we were purchasing a vehicle this year rather than last, I think we'd still go with the Sorento but it would be a closer contest.

This is all fantastic information! You make excellent points. Especially the comparisons of space between those vehicles relative to their size. The Sorento really really surprised me how spacious it was despite its size, especially compared to CX-9 like you said. It’s also funny you mention the GTI because I just got done with the and will have video up soon. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it 😁👍

I believe you like to respeak yourself..
"VW has learned... Americans resist seeing VW as a premium brand" beacause..? The VW includes Bently, Bugatti, Porsche .. so maybe the Amaricans reseist seeing VW as a premium brand because they´r stupid? Ok, next statement: "Americans want BIG vehicles" some rows later you said your wife is the Atlas too big for daily driving so.. did Amaricans want big cars, or not? I´m not sure at this point. Your third point "Americans don't like cars with names that are unfamiliar and difficult to pronounce". Well i´m not sure what to say first. Americans buy cars by their names? Something like Tiguan ist difficult to pronounce, so they can´t buy that car?! "KIA Sorento SXL" is good to go.. :o
Just one last word: VW shit´s on the europeans! Did you really believe all europeans want an 80K Euro expensive Touareg? The most people here are lower middle class (an less), who would like to buy an Atlas, because an Touareg is near unaffortable. But in europe you can´t get one, because of to less profit.

VW really do stick to the very basic and simple design, but it works. No grab handles or sunglasses holder 🤔. I would invest my dollars in the Pilot or Explorer. VW are decent vehicles, but need some modern touches.
    Outstanding review Nolan 👍
Thank you for pointing out every little detail.

Thanks again! I’m with you, the Atlas is roomy but it’s not for me.

Sunglasses holder is hidden. It’s to the left of the steering wheel in a hidden compartment

Raymond Lee thanks! I always forget about the compartment next to the steering wheel. I think I completely missed it with the Golf I recently saw too. Thanks!

Nice review! Seems like a pretty nice option over a van. Ya it looked like they could have added a few things like sunglass holder better visors etc.

Thank you! I agree. And even though it’s a base model itd be nice to have the basics included like that

I have the SE w/tech. I love it. I’ve always had v8 and the 2.0t is nice!

I have a 2.0T SE w/tech. Captains chairs in the 2nd row and the panoramic sunroof. Being in Florida I absolutely love the remote start to get the AC kicking. So far my MPG is 25 for day to day driving. I only use premium fuel (93) if you don't have the turbo you get no benefit from using premium. If you want more power it's less than $1000 to do a ECU flash from APR and gain 66hp and 88fpt tuned to premium fuel. You actually get better gas mileage with the tune if you don't have a heavy foot but when you need power it delivers!

I think a 2.0 Atlas would suit me fine but don't want to use premium.
How much of a difference in performance are you to expect from regular to premium. I think APR has a regular fuel tune I would be interested in if needed but I drive like an old man.

Thanks again Nolan! Look forward to your reviews! That Atlas isn’t set up too bad for a base model, although like you mentioned they cheaped out on some details. Loads of flat space in the rear for a proper shaggin’ wagon. Lol

    Very thorough review.
I bought the 2019 S model with 2.0 in Dec of 2019 and got a fantastic deal of just a little over 26K out the door.
I live in the country so mostly 55 mph roads with some short freeway trips. My average MPG since new is 27.1
and I post it on Fuelly.
I have gotten a high of 31 on a long trip. There really are grab handles on these 1 in the first row and 2 in the second row.
It also has rain sensor wipers they just aren't calibrated very well.
    No issues in 22,000 miles.
Just got back from a trip and averaged 28.1 mpg.
The collision warnings are nice and in reverse will lock up your brakes to avoid collisions' (found that out once with a knucklehead speeding crossways in a parking lot right behind me as I was backing up).

Nice review! I like the overall space and functionality of the Atlas. I haven’t been in one, but the overall interior quality and design looks cheap to me. I’m also surprised that VW omitted little things like vanity lights and sliders. The exterior design is a bit odd. I like from certain angles, but think it looks pretty ugly from other. BTW, that yellow color they offer is horrible. Haha. I’d take a Ascent over this any day.

    • @PrimeAutotainment
      @PrimeAutotainment  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks man! Haha I’m with you on the design and interior materials. Thankfully I don’t think I’ve ever seen the yellow in person lol. From everything I’ve seen on the Ascent, and sitting in one at the auto show...I’d hands down go for that too lol. Still seriously anxious to test out some Subaru’s.

They’re are a few of them around here and they’re pretty hideous. It’s makes you ask the question, who would go to a dealership and see that and say ‘I want that one’. ? Different tastes for different folks I guess. 🤣

I don't like that the rear liftgate glass doesn't open, wish more manufacturers would, it's a sport utility vehicle and that options definitely states as such..

22:36 "..You can´t get the turbo on other trims.." well that´s only the half truth. It´s possible to get a turbo on other trims, but not on the US Market. The VR turbo model is called "Terramont".
By the way, you did a good job presenting the car :)
