    Edgar is imo one of the most underrated directors/writers around. His movies are cult classics while being some of the most beloved in modern British cinema. It’s cool to see him continually get bigger budgets, but stick to similar techniques that made spaced and SotD so bloody good

    • @thegrayyernaut
      @thegrayyernaut 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I don't think he's as underrated as he used to be after Baby Driver's commercial success. A lot of people have gotten really interested in his stuff since then.

    Edgar Wright is one of the most consistent filmmakers ever when it comes to his perfected style matching his incredibly-written substance no matter the budget.

    • @karlkarlos3545
      @karlkarlos3545 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, it's easy to be consistent if you have just five feature movies under your belt (not counting a Fistful of Fingers). I'm really looking forward to his next 20 movies.

    Speaking of Clint Eastwood, you should do a budget breakdown on 3 of his films:
    Play Misty for Me (1971)- $950,000
    Unforgiven (1992)- $14 million
    Sully (2016)- $60 million

    ANT-MAN is a fairly decent movie (although very standard and formulaic)
    But if Edgar Wright had done it, it would've been groundbreaking

    • @NUCLEARDASH

      Marvel dont want to do groundbreaking movies, they want to do the same movie again and again only changing some characters

      and by freedom I mean by not falling out with Kevin Feige or whatever and actually being able to do what he wants with the direction of the film.

      While I agree that Ant-Man is a fairly standard movie, there are standout moments that were clearly either Wright's ideas, or definitely inspired by Wright's work.
      A good example of it imo is Luis' montages - the quick cuts, the zooms, and the overall comedic theme feels very much like a scene from one of Edgar Wright's movies.

    It's so interesting to go through Wright's filmography and pick up on all those stylistic flairs that have been there since the beginning. It'll be really interesting to see how his style translates to the more serious horror genre, considering how his previous films have been comedic in nature, or even how he'll create a distinctly Wright-styled documentary.
    I'd love to see you tackle Peter Jackson's progression from the small self-funded Bad Taste, to the immense multi-film production of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

      @@NUCLEARDASH efficiency my man, a director learns what kind of lighting is right for what shot, so he doesn’t need to try it again next time. It would be an ideal world where directors only learned their lessons in film school, but when working with larger budgets the situation fundamentally changes. The lighting example could extend just as easily to post production, or even something as small as which prop people are worth working with and which aren’t. Some directors become better and more efficient as they go on, a director as great as Edgar Wright is certainly in this class.
