Red Shea was as much a part of Gordon Lightfoot's music as the lyrics and Gordon's unerring rhythm. What a pair made in heaven. Never a better duo that so completely matched and enhanced each other.

I agree and disagree. How about Jim Croce and Maury? Phenomenal guitar work! Where Gordon really excelled, for me, was in incorporating a pedal steel guitar, played by another musical genius. That instrument is not common to folk or Canadian music. Why did Gordon avail himself of its special brilliance? No, there never will be such moments of musical genius again. Thank God that WE lived contemporaneous with them.

    • @johnrains8409
      @johnrains8409 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@waynesanchez6504 I agree, to a point. I liked Jim Croce, but his music never touched me like GL's music did. Croce's music spoke about love and many current (at that time) things, but I don' think it dealt with issues as much as GL's music. Just my own take.

Most heartbreaking song I've ever heard. The last time I saw her face, she was crying the most bitter tears, and I didn't know why. We were in love, I was 20, she 18, I American, she Canadian. Then the letters stopped coming. Found out a year later that the last time I saw her face, she was pregnant, not with my child. The pain has never stopped, and I've never married. Now I'm 61 and I still see her face in the night sky, against the moon. I still love you, Elaine, and all is forgiven. -Dan

@Nomo Never wasted any time, except dating hundreds of girls that I spent a lot of time and money on in my misspent youth. Graduated from college (university), went to grad school, taught college, got honorary discharges from two branches of the service, played hockey, did mma, skydiving, traveled the world, highly decorated for service at NSA, rescued approximately 100 cats and 1,000 dogs, also rehabilitated birds, plus I've helped a bunch of other animals and continue to do so. And I've only just begun.

Dan, I am fighting tears as I read your thoughts. It's clear your heart was badly broken. Try to stay bright, my friend. I too have experienced profound sadness, mostly because of my own selfishness and poor judgment. About all I can say is... sometimes things just don't work out. Your willingness to forgive is golden; I will pray that God may lead you to Elaine, if not in this life, then on the other side. Peace, man.

It was the summer of 1971 and I was home after completing my first year of College. During my freshman year I fell head over heals in love for the very first time, and had my heart broken when she decided to return to her first love. Glen Campbell recorded his own version of the gut wrenching song and it played many times over and over all summer. I can't tell anyone how many times I cried when this song played. It has taken over 50 yrs. to find a love again like Jane and I am grateful for my blessing with my beautiful Linda. But there are times that I wonder about Jane. I wonder if she is still alive and/or if going back to her first love was what she needed. Few of us know when we are young what we really need in a partner and lover. But I did learn a great deal with her about my needs. I can only wonder if she did as well. I'll be 72 this year and hearing this song always brings back strong memories. Which version is best? Gordon wrote it and I feel that he sings it best, but Glen's is also damn good.

The last time I saw her face,
her eyes were bathed in starlight
    and her hair hung long
The last time she spoke to me,
her lips were like the scented flowers
    inside a rain-drenched forest.
But that was so long ago
    that I can scarcely feel
    the way I felt before
And if time could heal the wounds,
I would tear the threads away
that I might bleed some more.
The last time I walked with her
Her laughter was the steeple bells
That ring to greet the morning sun
A voice that called to everyone
To love the ground we walked upon
    Those were good day.
The last time I held her hand,
    her touch was autumn, spring
    and summer, and winter too
The last time I let go of her,
she walked a way into the night
I lost her in the misty streets,
a thousand months, a thousand years
When other lips will kiss her eyes
A million miles beyond the moon,
    that's where she is.
The last time I saw her face,
her eyes were bathed in sadness
    and she walked alone
The last time she kissed my cheek
Her lips were like the wilted leaves
    Upon the autumn covered hills
    Resting on the frozen ground
The seeds of love lie cold and still
    Beneath a battered marking stone
    It lies forgotten.

This song is true genius! My first wife and I strayed and split over dumb things - I was the dumb one - this song tells that sad, sad story almost exactly.... how I would love a 2nd chance to do it right !

I first heard this on the old United Artists recordings in the late 60s, I think. His voice was just pristine in those days and 40 years later, that heartfelt vibrato still gets to me! This song and Affair on 8th Avenue were sung in the same time period. Gorgeous, gorgeous voice. My husband and I saw him in concert in El Paso in 1976 and we were both amazed that the musicianship was absolutely perfect.

This song was read aloud at a sad funeral of a lady named Trudy Blevins who died of cancer at the age of 53 after an 8 yr battle in stage four cancer. Trudys husband had the song read out loud. I have known Danny & Trudy Blevins since 1988. They were happily married around 33 yrs. So sad. This was always one of Dannys favorite songs.

I remember him holding me tight when I left the green room and called the next day. I could not go see him because I was married but looking back, I wish I did. I adore this guy and I interviewed him in Indiana six years ago and I wanted to cry. Where did our youth go? He is still here and so am I . that is real

The first time this song ripped my heart her name was Julie.
Now, 35 years later, her name was Susan and the agony of each word tears through my soul like the first time. I wonder at the pure genius of producing songs that can grab your very soul by the throat like this - the uniformity of the human condition called love and loss ...

This was the first GL song I heard, on a folk-music radio show in LA, when I was 18 in 1968. The heart-rending lyrics are so descriptive and poetic that they affect me in the same way (and in new ways) after listening to the song a hundred times in 55 years. Great to hear this live version, and I usually liked PeeWee Russell on pedal steel, but it was a bit overbearing on this track. I read once that Gord was sometimes annoyed by his loud and intrusive playing.

+mark stuart Dittos, Mark. One of those songs you can remember exactly where you were when you first heard it. With me it was Glen's version, about 1973, then when I "discovered" the great Gordon Lightfoot a few years later it made me appreciate the song even more.

He, & Carl, both. -------Glen's version has the fantastic orchestral arrangement by Al DeLory, so it's tough to compare the 2 versions. Glen is still my personal favorite, though I own both. ----------------WolfSky9, 71 y/o

Fabulously lovely song "The Last Time I Saw Her Face" is a touching song about Gordon's father's sister, who died in a fire......such a tragically beautiful tribute. But it could be about anyone's love for a love of one's life that was lost. What a truly amazingly exquisite song writer he is and always will be.
