Thanks for the video! It always makes you respect the fence more. I got lit up one time I won’t forget. I was kneeling down and accidentally hit the fence. My whole body felt it. The worst was shock I ever left when I was 12. It was back in 1993. It was a very very wet year and my neighbor put up a small area for his daughter’s pony. It was standing in water and he told me to touch the fence to see if it worked with pliers. I was dumb but not know. The pliers went flying out of my hands and it sounded like a shotgun going off. It made a huge mark on the pliers too. The crazy part I was at least 1” away from the wire too.
I use 2" gray electrical conduit, which stands up to UV sunlight. I cut three pieces from a 10' length. I do not use a cap and the associated cost. I use a 6' tee post for the support. To keep the conduit at the desired height in relation to the post, I drill a hole through the pipe just above one of the nubs on the tee post and run a short piece of 1/8" galvanized wire will through the hole. This keeps the birdhouse at desired height, keeps it from twisting in the wind. Also use a 13 degree angle on top of sides and roof to create slope for rain to run off. I use 6" cedar fence pickets for bird house material. Like idea of rounding fender washers for PVC pipe.
Greg: read the Colombia Missourian Purple Martin Majesty story from 2015. It tells all about Purple Martins and how the challenges of your area to attract and encourage them to stay are met. On our farm we found out that it is easier to put up a few of those Martin Hotels than a bunch of tree swallow nests in the spring. They are less fussy than the tree swallows and will fill up a 20 nest hotel without a care or fight with others. We would use a tractor with a bucket pto to put the houses on 15 ft poles in concrete pads that were poured and lined with a steel pipe at the base. Purple Martins are the largest swallow and eat about twice the amount of bugs that tree swallows . I learned that tree swallows will fight if they can see another birdhouse within 200 ft. Even aiming them to obscure the entry from the other birdhouse doesn't stop the fights so you have to make a lot of houses and space them about 1 acre of area which is a lot of work . Putting up the martin house we would keep the entrance holes blocked until they showed up to keep our other birds.
Sorry Greg, I laughed, everyone gets their turn if you work electric fence. I had my turn the other day, o was on the phone with a friend. I was his laugh that day. Good job for holding your young. That is discipline.
Bird nests are naturally in the shade in trees. The house in summer sun will fry the birds in the nest. I suggest you move it to the edge of the woods, surprisingly, the birds can fly to the center of fields for bugs then return to the nest without issue :)
That pvc won’t last 20 years. More like 5-10. It’s meant to be buried so it is not UV resistant. The gray electrical pvc conduit is the only way to go for sun exposure.
As much as i don't want anyone to know what it feels like to hit an 8,000-volt hot line, i chuckled knowing i'm not the only one to bump a fence that hot. my dad leaned into our fence too and took a shock to the forehead and stood up confused as to what happened to him. Needless to say, my cows respect our hot fences!
*The human brain is a wondrous thing!* One of it's primary strengths is the ability to *conceptualize.* I love to celebrate those individuals who move into a field of endeavor with which they are unfamiliar; look at the needs and problems which that new endeavor presents; apply their intellect to coming up with solutions to those needs and problems; *and end up conceptualizing entirely new solutions for those needs and problems that the people who have worked in that field of endeavor for long periods of time simply never thought of.* *These PVC tree swallow birdhouse posts are a perfect example of that kind of conceptualization.* If they prove not to pivot in very strong winds, then they could prove to be a viable alternative to birdhouses installed on permanent posts. This concept could conceivably allow a small-scale farmer on a limited budget to move his/her tree swallow birdhouses from pasture to pasture as cattle/sheep/goats were rotated from field to field.
@@markpiersall9815i had to move a bird nest with eggs 20 feet to a place the bird could see from the original spot, hoping the bird would move with it. Didn't work
Greg, I was thinking of the old countrified comedian, he was always talking to Vern, grabbed the wire under the hood, Vlaahleya, Vlaahleya, Yow! I'm reminded of my Father, 83 years old, "I was jumping on the trampoline, I did a gainer, I FELL AND BROKE MY ARM! (I tell ya', I'm never going to do THAT again...)"
They have to have a hole to build their nest in. Most pastures don’t have enough trees with holes in them. By placing the houses out in the pasture, the birds live where your cows are grazing. No bird houses = no tree swallows😒
Здравствуйте! У вас классный бизнес!!! Скажите пожалуйста...если пять месяцев в году на пастбищах лежит снег, то возможно ли использовать вашу методику ведения бизнеса????? Спасибо!
Put up a handful this summer. Can't wait to see how they work out when the swallows come back
Tree swallows are gorgeous birds and great for pest control. Pastures are great for wildlife. Beef is good for the environment when it’s done right!

What a cruel neigbour!

Lovely!
Thank-you to all!
Adding extra wood or in this case metal around the entrance prevents Squirrels from chewing the entryway open.

Have to admit, I laughed when I saw the title and again when you got zapped. Those are really nice bird houses.
I agree on both accounts. Greg getting zapped brought back memories of same. It is definitely a shocking experience! 😂
@@valeriestevens5250 Same here; it will make you stand up and pay attention.

Yes it was quite the surprise!

Speaks tons about Greg's golden character that he didn't curse at all after getting zapped. I'd been cursing my ass off after one like that...
It must be the time of the year to get shocked. I got shocked by my net fence October 3 and I tested it and it had 5.6 kv.!

simple pvc and rebar greenhouse guys can confirm
You touched it without being dared.

It’s those small details that make a quality device like this bird feeder.
That was surprising!! Nice bird house!
Let me tell you something, the times I’ve hit the fence, I made a noise that I did not think I was capable of making! 😂

Once a pair of Swallows have begun nesting, you don't want to move the nesting box. Just leave them be.

Greg, if you recall his name and he is building and selling these birdhouse & pipe combos, please let us know and add a link. Thank you.
He is not building them to sell.
Kindly show the cleaning-out design fearure. Thanks!
😂 That was a SHOCKINGLY awesome birdhouse
Nothing but a good old zap to wake you up, l’ve had my fair share of run ins with electricity 🤯
You did good, Greg, I might have said a couple of words that wouldnt fly in Church 🤣
😂 got myself lit up this weekend
Ouch! It must wake you right up!
Amazingly shocking video
Brilliant!
I hated to thumbs up this since you got shocked in it, but I always want to give you a vote and also everything else is good.
This is one of my biggest fears. Yikes!
Why wouldn't bird swallows just nest in the trees?
They have to have a hole to build their nest in. Most pastures don’t have enough trees with holes in them. By placing the houses out in the pasture, the birds live where your cows are grazing. No bird houses = no tree swallows😒
On the plus side Greg, you didn't do a Hollywood girl scream.
Camera is not in the electricity's path to ground; and the circitry probably isnt frame grounded.
Just lets you know you are still alive.
Very nice design.
You clean them out once a year?
What is your occupancy percentage?
Clean them out 1 time a year. 90% occupancy. Sometimes bluebirds use them and an occasional sparrow😒
Did the fence bite harder than😂 round up😂
It definitely sped up my heart rate for a bit😊😊
You earned my thumbs-up on this video!
Electro therapie ist good for the brain.
Nice.
Do the houses have to be in the open or can they be in trees?
They are best if installed out in the open.
Greg rekked by his own fence lol. i haven't gotten a single shock this year.
Tempting fate. Tell us when you do!
(lol)
WOOOOOOOOO!!! 😂
Been there a few times lol

Awesome laughs it off.
