Is Isaiah 53 about Jesus?

Despite strong objections from conservative Christian apologists, the prevailing rabbinic interpretation of Isaiah 53 ascribes the “servant” to the nation of Israel who silently endured unimaginable suffering at the hands of its gentile oppressors. The speakers, in this most-debated chapter, are the stunned kings of nations who will bear witness to the messianic age and the final vindication of the Jewish people following their long and bitter exile. “Who would have believed our report?,” the astonished and contrite world leaders wonder aloud in dazed bewilderment (53:1).
The stimulus for the world’s baffled response contained in this famed cluster of chapters at the end of the Book of Isaiah is the unexpected salvation of Israel. The redemption of God’s people is the central theme in the preceding verse (52:12) where the “you” signifies the Jewish people who are sheltered and delivered by God. Moreover, the “afflicted barren woman” in the following chapter is protected and saved by God, and is also universally recognized as the nation of Israel (54:1).
The well-worn claim frequently advanced by Christian apologists who argue that the noted Jewish commentator, Rashi (1040 CE - 1105 CE), was the first to identify the suffering servant of Isaiah 53 with the nation of Israel is inaccurate and misleading. In fact, Origen, a prominent and influential church father, conceded in the year 248 CE - eight centuries before Rashi was born - that the consensus among the Jews in his time was that Isaiah 53 “bore reference to the whole [Jewish] people, regarded as one individual, and as being in a state of dispersion and suffering, in order that many proselytes might be gained, on account of the dispersion of the Jews among numerous heathen nations.”
The broad consensus among Jewish, and even some Christian commentators, that the “servant” in Isaiah 52-53 refers to the nation of Israel is understandable. Isaiah 53, which is the fourth of four renowned Servant Songs, is umbilically connected to its preceding chapters. The “servant” in each of the three previous Servant Songs is plainly and repeatedly identified as the nation of Israel.

I read the book of Isaiah last year and the person Isaiah 53 was referring to was supposed to see his offsprings. That means the person was supposed to have children and see his grandchildren too. Isaiah 53:10.

For example, Matthew ripped half of the verse in Hosea 11 to make the prophecy of Jesus:
“He stayed there until the death of Herod, that what the Lord had said through the prophet might be fulfilled, ‘OUT OF EGYPT I CALLED MY SON.’” (Matthew 2:15)
But when we read the full verse in context, the passage has nothing to do with Jesus, it talks about the nation of Israel after slavery in Egpyt:
“When Israel was a child I loved him, out of Egypt I called my son.” (Hosea 11:1)
We see how Matthew ignore the full text by ripped the half of the text

As soon as it fits their beliefs there is apparently no need to give any evidence for claims like this - even though they're completely false.

and they’re boasting, “We killed the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, the messenger of Allah.” But they neither killed nor crucified him-it was only made to appear so.1 Even those who argue for this ˹crucifixion˺ are in doubt. They have no knowledge whatsoever-only making assumptions. They certainly did not kill him. Rather, Allah raised him up to Himself. And Allah is Almighty, All-Wise. Syrah 4:157-158

    • @EngagingWithIslam
      @EngagingWithIslam 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Christians are in no doubt about the crucifixion. It is actually Muslims who are in doubt about it. There are at least nine theories that Muslim leaders have about what happened to Jesus.
      1. No one was crucified. It was a vision.
      2. No one was crucified. It is a myth.
      3. Someone was substituted for Jesus.
      4. We do not know what happened.
      5. Jesus was crucified by the Romans, not the Jewish Leaders.
      6. Jesus’ body was crucified, but his soul was taken without death.
      7. Refuting the Jewish Talmud
      8. Jesus was crucified but survived.
      9. Jesus was crucified, and the Qur’an is describing him as a martyr.
The Qur’an explicitly states that the Jews did not succeed in putting Jesus to death and that Allah raised him to Himself, but it is silent about the nature and details of the matter and does neither say explicitly whether Allah raised him body and soul together from the earth to some place in heaven, nor that he died like other mortals and only his soul was raised to heaven. Therefore, on the basis of the Qur’an neither aspect can be definitely denied or affirmed. (S. Abdul A`La Maududi, The Meaning of the Qur’an, Lahore: Islamic Publications, 2007, fn 195 for Q4:157, vol. 1, p. 399)

Quran chapter Mary verse 33 we read: So Peace is upon me the day I was born, and the day I will die, and the Day I get resurrected alive.
If there is no origin of sin according to your believe there would be no need for alleged mystery crucifixion- please read Graham Stanton who is a leading scholar.
Jesus was a Jew and preached Judaism to other Jews, neither Jesus nor his followers ever heard of the word Christians. This is all Paul’s concoction, he invented Christianity.
According to the holly scripture Jesus was willing and offered himself to be nailed on the cross but yet he calls out to God saying my God my God why have you abandoned me, Jesus was screaming for help and wanted to be saved it dose not look like as it’s part of a divine plan to save humanity, furthermore, why didn’t Jesus scream my father my father why have abandoned me instead of my God my God?
This dialogue is between Allah and Jesus on the the of judgement, “O Jesus, Son of Mary, did you say to the people, ‘Take me and my mother as deities besides Allah?'” He will say, “Exalted are You! It was not for me to say that to which I have no right. If I had said it, You would have known it. You know what is within myself, and I do not know what is within Yourself. Indeed, it is You who is Knower of the unseen.
I said not to them except what You commanded me - to worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord. And I was a witness over them as long as I was among them; but when You took me up, You were the Observer over them, and You are, over all things, Witness.
If You should punish them - indeed they are Your servants; but if You forgive them - indeed it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
Allah will say, “This is the Day when the truthful will benefit from their truthfulness.” For them are gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever, Allah being pleased with them, and they with Him. That is the great attainment. Quran 5:116-119
The miracle of Jonah is that he was 3 days and 3 nights alive in the belly of fish and there is is no mention in the bible that Jonah rose from the dead, so Jesus telling you that he was alive as Jonah was because when the disciples of Jesus saw him after the alleged crucifixion they were terrified as they thought they’ve seen the ghost because the have heard by hearsay that Jesus was put in the cross, Jesus assured them that he was not a spirit by asking them to handle him and see and sat and ate with them.
Why would Jesus, who is God, call the Father “my God?”
Why did Jesus pray if he is God himself?

I especially do not understand how a book written by two different people when it is supposed to be the work of a single person continues to be conceived as such. as the work of one person.
one should not be surprised then with all these trafficking and alterations that ALLAH Soubhanahou wa Tâala Provider and Preserver of The Truth (الحق) sends other Messengers with other Revelations to restore The Truth and unveil the lies and alterations.
in themselves these debates then become null and void since each party will claim to hold the monopoly of the Truth but one party has tampered with and altered for a specific purpose and that without ALLAH Soubhanahou wa Tâala nobody except the forgers. would have known a lot so the defenders of the Truth must not forget in doing so that they did not fabricate It as the forgers and alterers fabricate the lie.
in the future, Imam Mahdi will restore Islam in its true sense for Muslims trapped in their "current" sense notably with regard to Governance and Education and the reestablishment of Zakat while Jesus (Peace be upon Him) will re-establish Submission (Islam) to ALLAH Soubhanahou wa Tâala as the only Religion for men and accepted by men.
maybe we will see the end of this Western-Western debate on Religion in which Muslims feel compelled to defend a position they don't have to defend for the simple reason that they don't have to Justify it to individuals who, because of their civilizational background, are not able to understand monotheism without the materialization and the physicalization of the object of religious faith - which is imposed by any reference to Greco-Roman culture - and we do not forget also that these debates are not held in any lingua franca of Divine Revelation.
far from this debate, everyone would be free to live their faith as they see fit and what should not be forgotten:
    Holy Koran
*Never will the Jews or the Christians be satisfied with thee unless thou follow their form of religion. Say: "The Guidance of Allah,-that is the (only) Guidance." Let's consider if what Bart Ehrman says is true.
    1. He said the Hebrew prophets were not predicting things that were to happen in the future.
    What nonsense. Listen to Isaiah.
Isa_42:9 See, the former things have taken place, and new things I declare; before they spring into being I announce them to you."
    Ehrman has not read Isaiah.
    2. Ehrman says that Isaiah 53 is not talking about the future at all and the verbs show this.
No they do not. Future prophecies in Isaiah are often said in the perfect tense, as they are in the Qur'an, for instance Isaiah 9 is about the Messiah bringing the everlasting kingdom of God, clearly future, yet spoken as completed.
    3. He says it is not about the Messiah at all.
Of course it is if you had read Isaiah. Isaiah 53 is about the faithful remnant of Israel and the book of Isaiah says that the Messiah will be this faithful remnant.
This is seen in the Jewish Targum from around the time of Jesus. It identifies the servant of Isaiah 53 as the Messiah:
"Behold, my servant, the Anointed One (or, the Messiah), shall prosper; he shall be exalted, and increase, and be very strong. As the house of Israel hoped (or, waited) for him many days ..." (Targum of Isaiah 52:13-14)
This interpretation comes from the observation that the Messiah is the righteous one (Is. 9:6-7, 11:1ff) and the salvation of Isaiah 53 brings the Messianic covenant (Is. 55:3).
    4. Ehrman says it is about Israel not the Messiah.
Please read Isaiah. The Messiah is the true Israelite who fulfils the destiny of Israel. Ehrman has made a distinction that does not exist. What the king does he does for the nation. Again, if Ehrman had read Isaiah he would see this:
Isa 49:3 He said to me, "You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will display my splendor."
Isa 49:4 But I said, "I have labored to no purpose; I have spent my strength in vain and for nothing. Yet what is due me is in the LORD's hand, and my reward is with my God."
Isa 49:5 And now the LORD says- he who formed me in the womb to be his servant to bring Jacob back to him and gather Israel to himself, for I am honored in the eyes of the LORD and my God has been my strength-
Isa 49:6 he says: "It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I have kept. I will also make you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring my salvation to the ends of the earth."
Notice how the servant is going to bring back Jacob (Israel) and then be a light to the nations. That is, this faithful Israelite will have a ministry to Israel and then to the nations.

      @ConsideringPhlebas 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Good points. It's also worth mentioning that the notion Isaiah 53 is about the Messiah is the oldest and likely the most historically widespread Jewish interpretation attested concerning this passage. That would seem to indicate an ancient provenance for the idea, and Jews are hardly likely to adopt, and in such vast numbers, a Biblical interpretation that is so heavily favourable to Christianity. It would be like the most significant theologians in Christianity coming to an agreement that Isaiah 42 is about Muhammad.

This is stupid. We're talking about establishing the origin of the Suffering Servant-Messiah concept. Interesting that you should reference the liar and charlatan Paul. In that very same chapter, Romans 10, Paul misrepresents God's Holy Word (as he did so often) and changes Scripture. Who in the world would do that?!? Only an evil person would change God's Word. In Deut. 30:8-14 God says: "And thou shalt return and obey the voice of the Lord, and do all his commandments which I command thee this day. And the Lord thy God will make thee plenteous in every work of thine hand, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy land, for good: for the Lord will again rejoice over thee for good, as he rejoiced over thy fathers: If thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which are written in this book of the law, and if thou turn unto the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul. For this commandment which I command thee this day, it is not hidden from thee, neither is it far off. It is not in heaven, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it? Neither is it beyond the sea, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it? But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it."
Paul once again lied when he quoted the Hebrew scriptures to the unlearned gentiles. In Romans 10:8 he says: “But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach.” That is NOT what the word of God says. It says "But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest DO IT."
Paul was not an apostle. Only he claimed this. How many apostles did Jesus appoint? Twelve. And, looking forward in time, how many apostles did Jesus (through John, Rev. 21:14) say he has? "And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the TWELVE APOSTLES of the Lamb." Jesus, again through John, commended the Ephesians in Rev. 2:2 when he said: "I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars.” There can be no doubt that he was referring to Paul and his cohorts. Paul even laments this in 2 Tim. 1:15 when he said "This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me."
Paul was a liar and a charlatan. There are many instances in the NT where you can catch Paul lying.

Objections to assumptions that Isaiah 53 is referring to a people:
    1. The servant of Lord, pictured in the text, is first referred as the Arm of the Lord, but who is not recognized as such. Isaiah 53 : 1 "Who has believed our message?
And to whom has the Arm of the LORD been revealed ?"
If He is the Arm of the Lord, The Arm of the Lord is all powerful as God is all powerful, therefore it cannot be a people, because no people is all powerful.
    2. Isaiah 53 : 8 "By oppression and by judgement He was taken away. Yet who of His generation protested? For He was cut off from the land of the living, FOR THE TRANSGRESSIONS OF MY PEOPLE, HE was punished". So that individual bears the transgressions of God's people among others. But if it is God's people who is bearing the transgressions of God's people, how can they also bear the transgressions of others as alluded in verse 12 and in Isaiah 52 : 15 ?
3: Isaiah 53 : 5 : "But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed."
The servant of the Lord was "pierced". I thank God because He makes His Word clear enough for those who put their hope in Him.
4.Isaiah 53: 3-4_: "Surely He took on our infirmities and carried our sorrows; yet we considered Him stricken by God, struck down and afflicted, But he was pierced for our transgressions,...". So He the Servant of the Lord is "considered" bearing the punishment for His own transgressions whereas in fact he was bearing the punishment for the transgressions of others. I don't know where this applies to a people, because the one supposedly referred here was deported in Babylon because of their transgressions. The punishment on the people was not assumed or "considered" as such, it was a fact, prophesied before it happened.
    5. In the previous chapter that introduces the Servant of the Lord it is said in Isaiah 52 : 15 : "so He will sprinkle many nations..." in reference to the prophecy of Ezekiel 36 : 25 : "I will also sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean. I will cleanse you from all your impurities and all your idols." How can a people sprinkle clean "many nations", if that people itself had impurities. The Servant of the Lord had to be spotless to provide purification to "many nations", and many nations means what it says: many nations.

You quoted Isaiah 53 : 1 but did you consider Verse 12?

      Isa 53:12
Therefore will I (God) DIVIDE him (Jesus) a PORTION with the GREAT, and he (Jesus) shall DIVIDE the spoil with the STRONG; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.
This Verse portrays Jesus EQUAL with those that are called "THE GREAT". WHO are they, that get EQUAL portions with Jesus? If Jesus is god then why does GOD NOT give it all to Jesus so that he can divide the spoil to whomever he pleases?
Why does Jesus ONLY has the POWER to divide his portion with the "STRONG"? Who are the "STRONG"?

@@Toronado2 The "strong" in this context = the spiritually strong, that is the humble who inherit eternal life in verse 53:10 "he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days;" - the 'offspring" are his spiritual offspring and these are described as the 'strong' in verse 12. You should realise that this where Jesus taught his disciples that they will be ruling with him in the coming Kingdom! They will be the offspring and the strong!

Why does Jesus ONLY have the POWER to divide his PORTION with the "STRONG"?
      So give it another try.

@@Toronado2 Because the "strong" are those spiritual offspring who have been made strong in Christ. Note that the word "only" is your word insertion - it has nothing to do with the text!
"Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many,
and he shall divide the spoil with the strong,
because he poured out his soul to death
      and was numbered with the transgressors;
yet he bore the sin of many,
and makes intercession for the transgressors." (Isaiah 53:12)
      >> your word "strong" is not any part of the text but merely your own imaginary insertion! This is why your question: "Why does Jesus ONLY have the POWER to divide his PORTION with the "STRONG"?" is completely irrelevant to the text.

Now tell me again why Jesus gets to DIVIDE ONLY HIS PORTION? You don't like the word ONLY because you say I inserted it? Then, that was for emphasis to make it clear. Jesus does NOT receive the FULL spoil! The Verse CLEARLY indicates that GOD has full control of the spoil and DIVIDES as HE WILLS. And Jesus gets His SHARE of it and can ONLY distribute His SHARE that "GOD" has given Him.
If you are going to continue with twiddling your fingers then that will ONLY reflect on your intellect.

@@teachmetheway7081 why can't god die? because of something called a paradox. by Gods own admission he is eternal and immortal (we see many proofs of this in all 3 abrahamic books). If he is immortal, he then cannot die as he would no longer immortal. If God died, it would show that 1 he is weak. 2 he is a liar or changed his mind, and 3 he can be killed by his own creation and is no longer an immortal entity. This is the logical conclusion. God does not lie. God does not die. He is all knowing, eternal, and ever lasting.

Caesar's Messiah: The Roman Conspiracy to Invent Jesus:Flavian Signature Edition
    Description
    Product Description
Was Jesus the invention of a Roman emperor? The author of this ground-breaking book believes he was. "Caesar’s Messiah" reveals the key to a new and revolutionary understanding of Christian origins.
The clues leading to its startling conclusions are found in the writings of the first-century historian Flavius Josephus,
whose "Wars of the Jews" is one of the only historical chronicles of this period. Closely comparing the work of Josephus with the New Testament Gospels, "Caesar’s Messiah" demonstrates that the Romans directed the writing of both. Their purpose: to offer a vision of a “peaceful Messiah” who would serve as an alternative to the revolutionary leaders who were rocking first-century Israel and threatening Rome.
Similarly, "Caesar’s Messiah" will rock our understanding of Christian history as it reveals that Jesus was a fictional character portrayed in four Gospels written not by Christians but Romans. This Flavian Signature edition adds Atwill’s latest discoveries of numerous parallel events in sequence which ultimately reveal the identity of the true authors of the Gospels.

Was Jesus the invention of a Roman emperor? The author of this ground-breaking book believes he was. "Caesar's Messiah" reveals the key to a new and revolutionary understanding of Christian origins.

    About the Author
Joseph Atwill began his religious studies as a youth in Japan at the only English-speaking school in the country, the Jesuit-run St. Mary's Military Academy. The majority of each of his school days was spent studying Greek, Latin, and the Bible, which he found fascinating, although he eventually drifted away from the faith. Having studied computer science in college, Atwill formed a series of successful companies with one of the most renowned programmers in the world, David Ferguson. Many years later, the sale of his interests in these companies allowed him to return to his earlier interest - the origins of Christianity. He spent over a decade studying hundreds of books, among them, the works of Robert Eisenman and the Dead Sea Scrolls. Together with Eisenman, Atwill wrote a paper on the dating of the Dead Sea Scrolls. While studying the two most prominent works of the 1st century - Josephus’ "Wars of the Jews" and the Gospels - Atwill noticed a series of parallels occurring in sequence between the military campaign of the Roman Caesar Titus Flavius and the ministry of Jesus. His findings led him to a startling new conclusion about the origins of Christianity - that a Roman imperial family, the Flavians, had created Christianity to pacify the Jews’ rebellion against Rome, and even more incredibly, they had placed a literary satire within the Gospels and "Wars of the Jews" to inform posterity of this fact. The results of Atwill’s research are set out in his book "Caesar’s Messiah". The second edition of "Caesar’s Messiah", Ulysses Press 2006, became the best selling work of religious history in the US in 2007, and its German translation "Das Messias Ratsel", Ulstein 2008, achieved #1 Best Seller status. The Flavian Signature edition of "Caesar’s Messiah", CreateSpace 2011, adds the most detailed presentation of the parallels Atwill discovered between the works of Josephus and the Book of Luke.

There are some problems with this presentation. But in short, the predominant view of Jews prior to AD 500 was that Isaiah 53 is about the Messiah.
You wrote: "Origen, a prominent and influential church father, conceded in the year 248 CE - eight centuries before Rashi was born - that the ***consensus*** among the Jews in his time was that Isaiah 53 “bore reference to the whole [Jewish] people"
I've read that passage, and nowhere does it say that it is the "consensus" of the Jews. Only that the particular Jew in question told Origen it was about Israel:
    jewsforjudaism.org/knowledge/articles/is-it-true-that-jews-interpreted-isaiah-53-as-referring-to-the-messiah-before-rashi
Why the misleading claim? This isn't the first time I've noticed you do this.
Also, we have attestation of the Jewish belief that this Isaiah passage DOES refer to the Messiah from BEFORE the time of Origen. We find it in the highly-regarded 2nd century Jewish Aramaic translation/interpretation of the Bible, Targum Jonathan:
    הָא יַצְלַח עַבְדִי מְשִׁיחָא
"Behold, my Servant, the Messiah, shall prosper..." -- Isaiah 52:13 (beginning of Isaiah 53 passage)
    הָא עַבְדִי מְשִׁיחָא
"Behold, my Servant, the Messiah" -- Isaiah 42:1
    www.sefaria.org/Targum_Jonathan_on_Isaiah.52.13?lang=bi&with=all&lang2=en
Anyway, since you respect scholarship, the following is what the Jewish scholar of Judaism, Daniel Boyarin, writes about Isaiah 53:
"Aside from one very important--but absolutely unique--notice in Origen's Contra Celsum, there is no evidence at all that any late ancient Jews read Isaiah 52-53 as referring to anyone but the Messiah. There are, on the other hand, several attestations of ancient rabbinic readings of the song as concerning the Messiah and his tribulations. The Palestinian Talmud, commenting on the Biblical passage, "And the land shall mourn" (Zechariah 12:12), cites two Amoraic opinions: one amora who interprets "This is the mourning over the Messiah" and one who disagrees, arguing that it is the mourning over the sexual desire (that has been killed in the Messianic age) (PT Sukkah 5:2 55b).
There are, moreover, traditions in the Babylonian Talmud and thus attested from the fourth to sixth centuries A.D. (but very likely earlier), the most famous and explicit of which is Sanhedrin 98b. Referring to the Messiah, the Talmud asks there openly, "What is his name?" and various names are proffered by different rabbis. After several different views, we find: "And the Rabbis say, 'the leper' of the House of Rabbi is his name, for it says, 'Behold, he has borne our disease, and suffered our pains, and we thought him smitten, beaten by God and tortured' [Isa. 53:4]." We see here both the vicarious suffering of the Messiah and the use of Isaiah 53 to anchor the idea. This midrash (or one very like it) is what lies behind the heartrending image that appears only one page earlier in the Talmud of the Messiah sitting at the gates of Rome among the poor and those who suffer from painful disease. They all loosen and bind their bandages at one time, and he loosens and binds them one at a time, saying: "Perhaps I will be needed and I don't want to delay." Thus, the Messiah too, ever mindful of his soteriological mission, suffers from the same disease and painful tortures of the indigent and sick of Rome."
    [...]
"There are also various medieval Jewish commentators, among them figures marginal to rabbinic Judaism (but hardly suspected of Christian leanings) such as the Karaite Yefet ben Ali, who clearly understand the Isaiah text and its suffering servant as about the Messiah. The early modern Kabbalist Rabbi Moshe Alshekh, also a spotlessly "orthodox" rabbinite teacher, writes, "I may remark, then, that our Rabbis with one voice accept and affirm the opinion that the prophet is speaking of the King Messiah, and we ourselves also adhere to the same view." The intellectual giant of Spanish Jewry, Rabbi Moses ben Nahman, concedes that according to the midrash and the rabbis of the Talmud, Isaiah 53 is entirely about the Messiah, but he dissents."
-- Boyarin, D., The Jewish Gospels, The New Press, 2012, pp. 152-155

The earliest Jewish commentary we have on the passage that I'm aware of is Targum Jonathan, from the around 150-200 AD, which states that Isaiah 53 is about the Messiah. But the pervasiveness and ancient-attestation of the interpretation is indicative of ancient provenance. Jews are not going to adopt, and in such vast numbers, an interpretation so central to Christianity. It would be like the the majority of the most authoritative theologians of Christianity agreeing that Isaiah 42 is about Muhammad.

Of course if one views the Bible as real revelations containing real prophecies, they will view it as such and will see the clear evidences for the predictions, but if one has an atheistic view and does not believe in the idea of prophecies, they Must assume they do not refer to future predictions.
Same is true of other scriptures as the Gospels, Mark is dated to be from 70 A.D why? Because in it Jesus accurately predicts the future destruction of the Temple which occured at 70 A.D. So as we can see if one does not believe in Revelation they will come to conclusion according to such a view.
Jesus himself read from the book of Isaiah at the temple and he confirmed it spoke of HIM and he came to fulfill those prophecies. Jesus represents Israel, "The King of the Jews" which is why he is called Israel, similarly was true of other great Kings such as David who also represented Israel.

Yes, Isaiah 53 is absolutely about Yeshua. Compare also with Isaiah 63:9.
It is the Lord that saves. Man cannot save himself. The Lord performed signs and wonders through men like Moses and Aaron because they trusted in the Lord (not in themselves) to save them and guide them.
All of our righteousnesses are as filthy rags. There is none that does good.
It has always been by faith, for Abraham believed God and it (Abraham's faith) was accounted to him for righteousness. Isaac was the child of faith, because they believed in God to keep his promise. Not Ishmael who was the child of works.

@39abat Jesus was a physical offspring of Abraham. Jesus came through Abraham's line of descendants.
Jesus prayed in the garden of Gethsemane. But when the soldiers arrested him he went willingly to the cross. When questioned by Pilate he did not protest his innocence, even though He was innocent. Jesus is the Lamb of God without blemish. Without sin. The perfect Passover Lamb to take away the sin of the world. When Jesus said "My Lord, My Lord, Why have you forsaken me?" he was not crying out to God as is generally taught. He was referencing Psalm 22. He was showing that he was fulfilling yet another messianic prophecy. Even in death, Jesus was still thinking of us.

    • @heathers4961
      @heathers4961 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@39abat Hi, no worries. What verse says "he will see his seed?" I dont know what you are referring to here.
Jesus is Abraham's descendant in the flesh because his lineage geneology can be traced back to Abraham. See Matthew 1:1. The tanakh also prophesies of his lineage.
Psalm 22 Is a messianic prophesy. In Jesus' day, it was common for the Jews to recite the first line of a particular passage of scripture since they didn't break it into chapter and verse. Therefore, its likely that when Jesus quoted the first line of what we see today as psalm 22, Jesus was giving his hearers a "reference point" to another particular prophecy that he fulfilled. In the psalm it references a parting of and casting lots for my garments, which is what the soldiers did after Jesus' death. The psalm also says "they pierced my hands and feet." Another clear reference to the crucifixion. These things did not happen to David.
In psalm 110, David says "The Lord said to my Lord; sit at my right hand till I make your enemies your footstool."
What do you think that means?

I wonder why Paul never mentioned Isaiah 53 in any of his letters, even though he was highly learned in the Torah and Jewish Traditions. However, he still preached that Jesus was the Messiah and God in the flesh. Even Bart Erman agrees with this. So, regardless if Isaiah 53 is talking about Jesus or not, the NT is still littered with references as Jesus as the Messiah. Again, even Bart Erman agrees with this notion. I pray all Muslims wake up to the truth.

Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?2He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.3He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.4Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted.5But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.6We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.7He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.8By oppression [1] and judgment he was taken away. And who can speak of his descendants? For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was stricken. [2]9He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth.10Yet it was the LORD's will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the LORD makes [3] his life a guilt offering, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand.11After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light [of life] [4] and be satisfied [5] ; by his knowledge [6] my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities.12Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, [7] and he will divide the spoils with the strong, [8] because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

If he had really clarified this text he would not have darkened it by saying that prophets speak only of their immediate times. If so then your prophet muhammad could never speak of barefoot penniless arabs building tall buildings.
Tovia Singer is not as credible as the deceased Rabbi Yitzhak Khaduri. Read what Khaduri wrote about who the messiah is. Tovia will only tell you what he wants you to hear. Let me make it clearer , if Jesus Christ owned TH-cam he would tell you Cyrus The Great really owns it. He defends so fiercely his view that he forgets this life among other things is about truth finding and living. Truth isn't a pillow for us to lay our weary head. It is the alarm bell that wakes you up from slumber!
Nevertheless regard what Isaiah 50:11 declares:
"But now, all you who light fires
and provide yourselves with flaming torches,
go, walk in the light of your fires
and of the torches you have set ablaze.

It can’t be talking about “Israel”, because that doesn’t make sense when applied to this sentence...
“so shall he sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider.”
    ‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭52:15‬ ‭KJV‬‬
It’s an undeniable truth that Jesus was presented to the Jews, the Son, by God. something they had never seen previously. The things he said had never been heard before, things such as “Love your enemy” “bless those who curse you” and everything he said, they did consider.
Paul, you also bring up the idea that this was talking about someone that had already suffered in Isaiah’s time. This doesn’t correspond with this...
“For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.”
    ‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭53:2‬ ‭KJV‬‬
Notice it’s talking about one that is to come? Remember...
“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”
    Revelation 1:8
The whole prophecy is mixed with past and future tense verbs. It’s clearly referring to Christ, speaking in Revelation saying “who is and who was and who is to come”, this is INDISPUTABLE Paul.
Any Muslim that sees wisdom in this man, you forget what was written about the thoughts of men. This man quotes scholars as if the LORD our GOD has not declared...
“The LORD knoweth the thoughts of man, That they are vanity.”
    ‭‭Psalm‬ ‭94:11‬ ‭KJV‬‬
Consider these things, all the Muslims out there, when watching this man rely so heavily on “biblical scholars”.
This man is full of deceit. His contempt for Christ is painfully obvious to any Christian. With that being said, consider this, friends...
“And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.”
    ‭‭Daniel‬ ‭12:2‬ ‭KJV‬‬
This man is the latter, be not deceived by him. He is a worker of division and iniquity.
Turn to Christ. Learn of Him. Trust Him.

It clearly talks about a sinless servant who was removed from the land of the living. Who was rejected and dispiced by HIS (Not theirs) own people. Israel was punished several times for transgressions against God. So it is not a sinless servant. Not trying to convince anyone. Isaiah 53 is referring to the faithful remnant of Israel and not Jesus.
In Isaiah 53:2-8, the kings of nations continue to humbly express their heartfelt confession. Only now they finally conclude that the nation of Israel suffered throughout their long and bitter exile as a result of the mindless sins of their own citizens. In the past, these world leaders surmised that the Jews were stricken and smitten by God because they stubbornly rejected the gods of the other nations. But now, as they bear witness to the glorious messianic redemption, they are astounded. They will finally grasp that Israel suffered as a result of the destructive arrogance and devastating reckless behavior of their own peoples. From Isaiah 53:9 through the following powerful chapters, the God of Israel alone is speaking. The Gentiles are listening silently.
As in Isaiah 53, Isaiah 52 and 54 clearly identify Israel in the singular, suffering innocently as a result of the vile wickedness of the gentile nations. In addition, all three of these exhilarating chapters vividly describe the glorious redemption of Israel in full view of the gentiles, her former persecutors.
For example, in Isaiah 52:4 the prophet recounts that “Assyria oppressed him [Israel] without cause.” This central theme conveyed Isaiah 52 - the nation of Israel innocently suffered as a single individual at the hands of the gentiles - is precisely the same underlying topic of Isaiah 53.
In the following chapter, the motif remains unchanged. In Isaiah 54, the prophet recounts how Israel, in the singular, is “despised,” “forsaken,” and “afflicted.” These are the identical descriptions of the nation of Israel found in the previous chapter, Isaiah 53. Look at the following verses.
    Isaiah 52:4(nkjv):
For thus says the Lord GOD: “My people went down at first Into Egypt to dwell there; Then the Assyrian oppressed them without cause.”
    Isaiah 54:6-11(niv):
6 The LORD will call you back as if you were a wife deserted and distressed in spirit- a wife who married young, only to be rejected,” says your God. 7 “For a brief moment I abandoned you,….” 9…. So now I have sworn not to be angry with you, never to rebuke you again….” 11 “Afflicted city, lashed by storms and not comforted,…”
Above all verses clearly depict the nation of Israel as “despised, forsaken, afflicted” (Isaiah 54:6-11), and oppressed “without cause” (Isaiah 52:4) at the hands of the gentile nations.
    Now read Isaiah 53:2 (nkjv):
For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, And as a root out of dry ground. He has no form or comeliness; And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him.
This imagery of a tree struggling to grow in dry earth is a metaphor for the Jewish struggle in exile. A young tender plant in dry ground appears that it will die. The Jews were always a small nation, at times as small as 2 million people, threatened with extinction. In this verse Isaiah describes Israel's miraculous return from exile, like a tender plant that sprouts from this dry ground.
    Isaiah 53:8 (nkjv):
….For He was cut off from the land of the living; For the transgressions of My people He was stricken.
The phrase “land of living” (Eretz HaChaim) refers specially to the land of Israel. Thus this verse “He was cut off from the land of the living” means exiled from the land of Israel.
Isaiah 53:8 concludes with their stunning confession, “for the transgressions of My people (the gentile nations) He (the Jews) was stricken.”
Now look, I am giving below more examples from the bible to support my explanations.
Again look, "the land of the living" means "the land of Israel". Look at the following verses of Psalm.
    Psalm 27:13 (niv):
I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.
    Psalm 52:5-6 (niv):
…. he will uproot you from the land of the living. 6 The righteous will see and fear; they will laugh at you,…
    Psalm 142:5 (niv):
I cry to you, LORD; I say, “You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.”
Now read again Isaiah 53:8 (nkjv):
….For He was cut off from the land of the living; For the transgressions of My people He was stricken.
Now my question is that in Isaiah 53:8 who is confessing that "For the transgressions of My people He was stricken."
    Who is confessing here?
    Who is that "My"?
The answer is “the kings of gentile nations” which clearly shows that the term "He" is referring to the nation of Israel as a whole.
Now about Isaiah 53:10, what we have only seen so far for Isaiah 53:10 is the Christian translations, such as the KJV, or the NIV. But these translations are not accurate.
So before discussing this verse, we should go to the following website to try to get an accurate translation (not one designed to appear prophetic) for Isaiah 53:10 from Hebrew text to English text.
    www.chabad.org/library/bible_cdo/aid/15984/jewish/Chapter-53.htm#v10
This is translated in Yeshayahu - Isaiah - Chapter 53:
And the Lord wished to crush him, He made him ill; if his soul makes itself restitution, he shall see children, he shall prolong his days, and God's purpose shall prosper in his hand.
Let's revisit the verse of Isaiah 53:10:
"He desired to oppress him and He afflicted him; if his soul would acknowledge guilt he would see offspring and live long days and the desire or God would succeed in his hand."
To clear your understanding more, let's revisit the verse of Isaiah 53:10 again:
"The servant must admit his wrongdoings (guilt). If the servant does this then he will have a long life with many descendants."
Now again read Isaiah 53:10 (KJV):
he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.
In Isaiah 53:10, you can see that the servant is promised long life and seed. Let’s explore this verse of Isaiah 53:10.
To begin with, Jesus did not have any biological children. The Hebrew word זֶרַע (zerah), which appears in Isaiah 53:10 - it is the blessing bestowed on the servant - means “seed.” This Hebrew word can only refer to biological offspring when used in connection with a person’s children.
Again the Hebrew translated as "long life" is the phrase יַאֲרִ֣יךְ יָמִ֑ים (ya’arich yamim). Both the NIV and KJV have translated this as "prolong his days" -- which means lengthen his physical life. The New Living Translation has "He will enjoy a long life". Jesus did not live a long life. He probably died at about age 33.
So the passage says that the servant will live long life to see many physical offspring (children from his body) -- something that Jesus did not do either.
Jesus was not rewarded with children and a long life. So this is not a legitimate prophecy about Jesus.

    1. “the prophets of the Hebrew Bible were not predicting things that were to happen hundreds of years in advance” Hmm, maybe read for yourself rather than from old Bart “The vision of the evenings and mornings that has been given you is true, but seal up the vision, for it concerns the distant future.” Daniel 8:26
    2. The Scriptures often use past and present tenses to describe the words of a future generation. Consider Zechariah 12:10, a future event being considered in the past tense” And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son.” Zech 12:10
    3. Rather than mention the Machiyach (Messiah) it uses the colourful and descriptive term for him “The Arm of YHVH“ Isa 53:1
    4. There are 2 servants in Isaiah, Jacob (Israel) and the Suffering Servant (the Mashiyach). Consider the impossibility of Israel bearing the sin of Israel in verse 8 making no literary sense “By oppression and judgment he was taken away. Yet who of his generation protested? For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was punished” Isaiah 53:8
I would suggest reading Isaiah 52:13 to 53:12 for yourself and ask how this could possibly be referring to anyone but Y’shua. Personal integrity may be challenged by doing so.
“and kings will shut their mouths because of Him” Isaiah 52:15
    Bless you on your journey.

@@AliAhmed-uy9wb I'm sorry for "acting smart". In fact, all I'm telling you here is that Jesus said he came to fulfil the Prophets and what he meant by that is that he was fulfilling prophecies written about him! As far as Jesus was concerned, he was fulfilling Isaiah 53, which is why he said in the gospels: "how is it written of the son of man, that he must be treated with such contempt?" - this was quoting Isaiah 53:3 " He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not."
The only reason Jesus knew he was going to be crucified in the Garden of Gethsemane, when NO charge or sentence had been passed about him, was because of Isaiah 53 and Psalm 22 which told him he must be crucified. At the time of the Garden, no one knew Jesus was to be crucified....only Jesus! He knew he must die for the Redemption of man as told in Isaiah 53:12

Isaiah 53 is a double edged sword. It doesn't talk about what prophet, how they would suffer, etc. It could be mohammed, or veyr indeed jesus but it doesn't talk about crucifixion.

Jesus Christ is the Subject of Isaiah 53.
The second half of Isaiah portrays Israel as the failed Servant of Jehovah. Some of the harshest criticisms of Israel's wickedness in the Bible is found in Isaiah. Against that, is another Servant Who is righteous enough to bear the sins of the world. He is called Israel, and yet is seen as being distinct from Israel, and alongside Israel. His worldwide effect is marked by being the light of the Gentiles, bringing Jehovah's salvation to the ends of the world, bringing many to righteousness, bringing healing to the nations, being an astonishment to the Gentiles for His suffering for our sins.
This is describing, not the general righteous of Israel, but One, the most righteous of Israel, King Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth. None of these worldwide effects can be attributed to the general righteous of Israel. Yet they happened, and are still happening. Jesus healed me, and is healing me of my wickedness to this day. He has and is healing millions around the world.

[5] Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: [6] Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: [7] But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: [8] And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. [9] Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: [10] That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; [11] And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

"Oh Lord why have you forsake me?"
This is a Messianic psalm of David, Psalm 22, the purpose of which in Jesus' quoting it is to show that he is the suffering Messiah. Verse 25 of the Psalm shows that God answers the one who cries to him, as Jesus was answered.
I don't know what Jesus flipping the tables has to do with anything. He was rectifying their misdeeds, citing the Tanakh as his reason for doing so. The rectification of Israel was precisely the declared purpose of the Servant of Isaiah, 49:1-5.

I've listened to Singer's views on Isaiah 53. Unfortunately for him, the majority of ancient Jewish interpretation is against him. See my post in this comment section in which I quote Daniel Boyarin, a Jewish scholar of Judaism, who quotes a plethora of Jewish sources showing that the majority belief of late-ancient Jews was that Isaiah 53 was about the Messiah.

In addition, Singer is not a scholar of Judaism. He's a Jewish missionary. Boyarin however is a recognized scholar of Judaism. Not that that makes Singer wrong, but it should be stated because your description is not correct.

Respect to you for sharing of your knowledge, but I believe that there is too much of a focus on the tense being used. Is it not possible that Isaiah was saying what he foresaw to happen through the power of God, which is why past tense was used (because he had a vision of it)? David was the King of Israel and Jesus is a direct decendent of him. My faith confirms this is about Jesus. The Holy Spirit speaks to me in ways that I cant explain in human terms but I was just thinking how I would like to read more about the messianic prophecy because I wanted to grow more in my relationship with God. I happened to turn to this particular scripture and read it without researching or googling first. I truly wanted to seek the Lord while He can be found (which I saw in Isaiah 55!) The Holy Spirit brought me here and confirmed it in my spirit. Take a look at John 3 to anyone reading this. If this helps you get closer to Jesus and accept His precious gift of love and sacrifice for you to live forever in the Kingdom of Heaven then glory to God! ❤❤❤

If ISRAEL was the servant in these verses people then explain why chapter 49 says the following
    "And now the Lord says-
he who formed me in the womb to be his servant
to bring Jacob back to him
    and gather Israel to himself,
for I am[a] honored in the eyes of the Lord
and my God has been my strength-
    6 he says:
“It is too small a thing for you to be my servant
to restore the tribes of Jacob
and bring back those of Israel I have kept.
I will also make you a light for the Gentiles,
that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.”
I hope you can see why i don't trust Paul anymore. He obfuscates too much. In fact he should not do it at all. However, he feels happy doing it because it pushes the islamic narrative at the expense of truth. Even if muslims want to remain muslims why should this man and Ehrman make you think that these chapters and their corresponding verses are not about Jesus and are instead about Israel.
Look at this extract from 49:5-6. Is it that the servant the nation of israel speaks of itself as the one to bring back Jacob () and get this also gather his own self (Israel) to himself. Using Paul and Ehrman's logic it makes no sense.
But as some of you may already have noticed something: Consider what the first line says "And now the Lord says-" ... that he who formed ME in the womb to be his servant.
Reading it as is brings a unique situation. The Lord is the one formed in the womb for the purpose of being HIS servant. With a specific task of bringing Jacob back and gathering Israel. The HE refers to God Almighty. Check it out!!!
