HELP? Turning Your Earrings After Piercing - Necessary or no?

  • In today’s video we’re going to talk about if you really have to turn your earrings after first being pierced.
    You’re probably watching this video because you may have heard some conflicting piercing aftercare advice. Depending on where you were pierced, who you were pierced by, you may have been told to turn your earrings or may have been told not to and now your just like WHAT DO I DO!
    If you are new, welcome to the Piercing Outlet. My name is Christina. I used to pierce ears and sell jewelry for 5 years before creating The Piercing Outlet. Now I make weekly videos to help you guys.. so be sure to Subscribe!
    If you are one of those who are confused on whether to turn your earrings or not.. smash the like button.
    SO this is one of the most asked questions here on my channel. I HEARD you. so here we are.
    Back in the day turning your earrings when you first got pierced was something that was told to everyone who got their ears pierced was told to do.. turn your earrings. No matter who pierced you.
    It’s actually still being told but NOW there’s more professional piercers who actually suggest NOT to turn your earrings which is causing some confusion.
    Why was turning your earrings recommended in the past?
    Keep the earring from “sticking” or adhering to your skin
    Keeps the skin from “growing” over
    But piercings now recommend NOT turn your earrings because of
    Increases the risk of bacterial infection
    It’s ripping the healing skin or reopening the piercing which just delays the healing time
    Over turning your earrings can lead to inflammation
    So which one is it?
    My personal opinion.. I think turning your earrings was a way of checking on your ears to make sure they aren’t becoming too tight, and the skin not growing over your earring. That’s usually the cause of your skin growing over earring.. not from not turning them but if you do go to turn them and you’ll notice them before it actually happens.
    As for as for NOT turning them, I would have to agree more. It does increase the risk of bacterial infection because you are touching there things and then touching your ears which is an open would.
    You can feel when you first get pierced and you go to turn your earrings and it kinda feels like you are ripping your skin when its getting stuck.
    And I have seen time and time again people over turning their earrings out of boredom or obsession and them just become inflamed
    Do the reasons for not turning them outweigh the reasons to turn them?
    This is something that is actually not specially mentioned on the Association of Professional Piercers website. It doesn’t say to turn them and it doesn’t say not to turn them.

    I feel like this “turning” thing and skin ripping is the root cause as to why my piercings never healed and stay infected. And the scar tissue is what is still in there as to why I can’t wear earrings now. 18 years I’ve had somewhat open earring holes that sometimes get infected (which happened when I did mess with it out of frustration that it was there) now I’m interested into trying earring agains and the information from this video and comment section is very helpful. Thank you!

    I pierced my ear lobes twice and this is my experience.
    First piercing: I turned my earrings once a week. They healed over and I had a very painful experience.
    Second piercing: I turned my earrings everyday. No problems, they healed in 6 weeks. I did stop turning if there was pain (if I pinched the piercing at any point or cut it).

    don't touch your earrings for 2 weeks. then you may turn them *a little at a time* in the shower with water on your ears. if it hurts, stop turning. don't turn them back and forth, just one direction.

    Back in the 1970's, I had my ears pierced at the Conrad Shop in Greenwich Village, NYC, and I was told to clean the ears daily with hydrogen peroxide and then turn the earrings and do it daily. I never had an infection or any problems with my ear lobes.

    Hello! So i got my seconds (earlobe piercings) and so far this is my experience. Right after I got them done the area was swollen for maybe 30 minutes and then it went down. My piercer recommended to turn them every now and then (once a day), clean the area (do NOT use alcohol or any aggresive solution to clean them) and to put some antibacterial cream twice a day (morning and night). It's been two days and I've been cleaning the area and applying the cream; so far so good. I've had no swelling, no pain, and it looks overall good. When I turn the earrings it doesn't hurt (I just turn them just to make sure the piercing is not getting stuck, then I leave it alone).
    I always make sure that they're not wet, since humid enviroments are perfect for bacteria to grow, and I dry them (after a shower, for example) with paper towels. I don't sleep on them, though I figure this might be harder for people who move around a lot in their sleep, and I think this is pretty important, since you really don't want to put any pressure on the wound, nor move the earring too much. I made my reasearch before getting pierced and this was a very common recommendation.
    As I read on another comment, every piercing and every body is different, so it heals differently too. I'd say to treat your piercings as any other wound; clean it, put your creams on and leave it alone. Your body will do it's thing, and as long as you're following the general recommendations you should be fine! These videos are very helpful since the comments allow you to read about other people's experiences, so I thought I'd leave mine too.
    Also be careful when putting shirts on! You don't want them dragging your piercing down!

    I think it varies per person, since every piercing is different. I think moving it back and forward while cleaning and wet should be enough!
    I myself turn my earrings no more than once a day/every other day, and I only turn it about 45 degrees (while cleaning and it’s wet, never otherwise)

    I didnt turn my piercings until about a week after it got pierced. Imo, if you turn it and it hurts, just listen to your body and dont force it, and if you must, do it slowly. I also think over turning is definitely not good because of infections (and I do it sometimes too). But turning is really not necessary after the first two months or so.

    I turned and cleaned my infected piercings in the shower once a day along with cleaning them with saline spray and they healed pretty quickly. For my new piercings now (industrial, conch, 3rd lobe) they really hurt to turn at first but now it’s smooth and hasn’t gotten infected yet so I guess it’s all about not turning them unless you’re cleaning them?

    In my experience I feel like turning your piercings isn’t as “big” of a problem if you clean your earrings and ears regularly. I myself have 10 piercings in total (3 ear lobe piercings on each ear and a double helix in both ears) and iv’e turned all of them on a regular basis. I do make sure to clean them properly after turning them to prevent them getting infected. I haven’t had any infections or problems with any of my piercings. I feel like this is a very personal experience which can differentiate for everyone, if you make sure to clean your piercings regularly and do what feels best for you: do it!

      do you stop if it hurts or do you keep going?

    • @ashleyfoets9182
      @ashleyfoets9182 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sasori7054 It depends on the situation, when I can tell my earring is getting irritated (by being pulled at by accident for example) I prefer to leave the earring alone and just give it a proper cleanup. However, I’ve had earrings hurt a bit when turning because they were growing in, so sometimes it does hurt a little bit but not a large amount. The only time It truly hurt for me was when my helixes were new and my ear was swelling a lot more then anticipated (and my bars ended up being too short) so the earrings were practically being “swallowed” by my ear. However I made sure to push them out as much as possible, though that did hurt. (In this case you have to get longer bars as soon as possible!)

    Got my ear lobes pierced 2 month ago with a hoop earring. Still hasn't healed and bleeds sometimes. I clean it with h2o and use a q-tip to remove any debris but when I do that, it causes the hoop to rotate. I don't know if its the rotation that's keeping it from healing. Any advice?

    • @myheartiswriting
      @myheartiswriting 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This might be too late, but your earrings were definitely infected. If your ears haven't gotten any better by this point, you absolutely need to take them out and let them close up. Frankly I just got my second lobe piercing repierced a few days ago because one side just kept filling back in and I decided to just let it heal, wait six months and start over. There is no shame in starting over. And the sooner you let it heal the less scar tissue you'll have to fight through to repierce it.
      If you're doing better but still having ups and downs, I would stop using a q-tip because the fibers can cause extra irritation and even carry germs. I would only touch your piercings with clean hands and use a saline spray to clean out dirt. I would also suggest maybe changing to studs or flat earrings on both sides because they'll move less and are less likely to get caught in hair or fingers, meaning your less likely to cause any additional irritation. You can buy piercing studs with rounded backs (or just the rounded backs) to also prevent any butterfly backs from causing any irritation to the back of your lobes, because having your neck being stabbed can actually cause minor abrasions that will also delay the healing process.
      Regardless, I hyope your piercings are doing better now!

    i have a question...i just got my cartilage pierced and it does hurt to sleep on it, will i be able to eventually? because i heard someone who said they have had their cartilage pierced for years and they still can’t sleep on it, so now i’m worried i won’t be able to sleep on it ever😬

    • @ThePiercingOutlet
      @ThePiercingOutlet  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      In the beginning it’s best to avoid sleeping on it due to it getting snagged on pillowcases/blankets or even just putting pressure on it.. avoid anything that will irritated.
      After it heals, yes you should be able to sleep on it with no problem.
      Personally have had both of mine pierced for many years and have been able to sleep on them. It was hard in the beginning. I have found more success sleeping with hoops than studs. Not saying that will be the case for everyone. It’s a matter of trying different jewelry to find what works for you !

    Is it a big problem if my earlobe piercing is too tight? also I try to clean it every day with saline but I don't know if that is enough for it to heal fast, it's my 3rd day with it already and it doesn't hurt, even touching only stings a little bit, I will change them after 6 weeks but I wonder if turning them is necessary, and if I should when do you recommend?
    I'm so glad I found your channel it guided me to know what to do, I hope you respond

    • @ThePiercingOutlet
      @ThePiercingOutlet  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it’s too tight, it will feel uncomfortable (probably also look too tight).
      One thing you do have to worry about when being too tight is the possibility of your skin growing over the earring. I would def see a professional piercer to guide you in the right direction and possibly change your jewelry into a longer earring so it will heal properly.

    I got my first ear piercing at claire’s about 2-3 weeks ago, and i’ve never turned them because it hurts. My parents keep telling me that I need to turn them or else my ears will grow around the earrings and it scares me to think of it that way so i try to turn them but i really just can’t at all it just hurts so bad. I also don’t want to turn them because i’m afraid i will get them firstly buy touching them! I really need help! please please reply 🙏🏻😽

    • @ThePiercingOutlet
      @ThePiercingOutlet  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Whether or not your “suppose” to turn them, it should NOT hurt when you do. This concerns me with how your ears are healing. I would get them looked at by a professional piercer (not Claires - no shade to them) just for a visual inspection and let them know your concerns.
      If your unsure of who to go to, visit safepiercing.org you can find a piercer part of the app closest to you.
