In the end it makes no difference, as the issue isn’t fossil fuels but human consumption in general and the global economy dependent on consumer spending. Cleaner energy isn’t clean for example and your just offloading the environmental costs to 5 years old being forced to mine cobalt in the Congo and having China bare the costs of refining lithium and polluting itself in the process. Consumption is the issue, no matter how Silicon Valley tries to greenwash the tech industry, it is not the solution. The environmental costs and responsibilities are merely shifted to others unseen.

Sadly watching this documentary has taught me that we DID start to do something, in the eighties, and then big business managed to get us to stick our heads in the sand long enough so that now it’s too late. The time to act was back then, we somehow managed to go backwards and not forwards in our knowledge. Where was this doc a decade ago when people were still denying climate change and arguing the science is still out? Apparently we’d gone through all this before, and didn’t know it. We’re definitely doomed.
Greed has needs. Uncertainty and doubt are their greatest weapons. The concepts of the "known unknowns" and the politics of uncertainty are destroying the only earth we have. Propaganda. Wait until it starts cooling off. That will really scare people. Americans have been migrating south for the warmer climate for years, These regulations are nothing but virtue signaling, they do absolutely nothing to change or stop change. Zilch.
Your program is proof that if the young people in this country don't stand up, pull their heads out, and take over, there will be no world for them to inherit.
true. but we have to ask ourselves, do the Young ppl want to do that? Many of them have just given up and have accepted that they inherited a doomed earth , and are just waiting for the end.
That goes for wayyyy more than just oil consumption. There's many more critical issues and decisions to address before it's too late, such as human population increasing worldwide by billions more. As a fellow scientist, climate change created by humans is still unclear or uncertain. The Ice Age just ended 13,000 years ago. And Volcanoes are erupting around the world the last two years at alarming rate spewing emissions into the atmosphere. But one thing that is 100% for sure is we don't need anymore humans!!! And that is a fact we can see first hand right now with NO science. The human population explosion is terrible on the earth!!!!! People want to blame human error and earth's problems on fossil fuels!!!

I’m man enough to admit that I fell for the climate denial propaganda that was being pushed until around 2015. Their arguments were somewhat compelling, when you didn’t take into consideration the facts from the other side. We had already begun experiencing slightly strange weather patterns in Colorado at that point, but nothing overly concerning, but right around 2016 onward, each year was noticeably warmer than the year before. Our reservoirs in Colorado began drying up, some of our biggest lakes by 2018-2019 got down to 30% full. Our snowpack was down, our rainfall was down, and every summer was hotter than the last, finally I’d woken up to the fact that this is indeed happening, and if we don’t do something soon then we will all be in serious trouble down the road. It’s sad that literally almost nothing and no policies have changed since

It will destroy your body, have long lasting negative affects that will leave you debilitated for the rest of your life never able to live normally again. But he also does not guarantee it will cure you. In fact it will do little to fight the cancer. Another doctor tells you. That your body has been fighting the cancer on it's own effectively. It hasn't the means to cure you yet but it has begun reversing some of the damage the cancer has done. With time and care your body ultimately will build a strong enough defense and defeat the cancer. You also get to go about your life with minimal sacrifices and practically live a normal life. Nobody mentions that one good reason to take measures to “Go Green” is to save money. I installed my first energy-saving light bulbs not because they used less electricity but because they lasted longer (I was sick of always having to replace two certain light bulbs in my house because they have a high usage). I installed insulation, double-glazing, heat pumps, solar hot water panels, a double floor in my living room (downstairs) and got my Natural Gas supply cut off all in order to save money. My electricity usage (and therefore what I pay) is now half of what it would be if I hadn’t done all those things.

@@fredmitchel1236 While they're guilty of concealing information that could have shaped public policy, the fact we're guilty too. All of us have been and still are the primary end consumer. I think I consume less than 'average', both in terms of driving and household use. While I hope to make my next vehicle either electric or hybrid, I will likely remain a gas burner for years to come. Similarly, most people in the U.S. will still be burning gas, both in their vehicles and at home 10 years from now. For grins, I just Googled for the price of the economy model Tesla, Model 3 ...."from $47,000'. However, throw in other hidden costs (warranty, etc.) and a few options that most want, and the price is a lot more. I see an ad for a used 2022 model 3 for $58,000. I also see a used 2022, high performance model 'S Plaid' for $143,000. Even for the economy model 3, most people will balk at paying that much over the next few years. In addition to cost, the infrastructure is not yet in place to go most anywhere and easily find a recharge station. In contrast, there are over 145,000 fueling stations in the U.S. Then, there's the recharge time (~20 minutes for a partial, 2 to 3+ hours for a full charge). That means the thru-put of vehicles per hour per charging station is a lot less than a gas pump island. Lastly, if an EV runs out of charge before reaching a charging plug, you're screwed. A friend was driving between Los Angeles and Las Vegas and got caught for hours in a traffic jam behind a major accident. (It was likely hot, with drivers running their A/C while waiting) For anyone who ran out of gas, a tow truck or the like could just add a gallon or two to each vehicle so they could reach the next station. But once the traffic started to flow, he saw a lot of EVs (mostly Teslas) still parked on the side of the road. Tow trucks are NOT equipped to charge an EV. Even if a few rigs do have recharge capability, they would be only capable to do so at a S L O W trickle compared to a charging station (which offer 100 and even 200 Amps at 240 Volts or even higher), let alone dumping in a couple gallons of gas. That means the EV drivers had to wait to be towed. None of this makes me want to run to the nearest EV dealer. My point to all this is that all of us who drive or fly, and to a lesser extent, all of us who take mass transportation on a regular basis and/or order a lot of stuff online that's delivered to our home and office, are the end user who sustains the demand and market, myself included. The same goes for home energy use.
@@gregparrott we have a 2006 Honda which my son mostly uses, it only cost $22,000 brand new and has only 80k miles on it. @@jdenino6022 The government has sporadically offed rebates/subsidies to help offset the premium cost of EVs. Still, a lot of people will either keep an older gas/Diesel vehicle for many years to come, or find a shortcoming with an EV, as I did in 2017. My pickup truck was getting too old and given the high price of used ones, the price of a new one (relatively base model) was not much more. Electric pickups weren't available in 2017. But even if the new Ford or Rivian (or soon to be released Tesla) pickup was available today, I can't see buying it. Even ignoring the price, it does not have the range. And if you're towing anything (an expected task for a pickup), the range and time spent recharging become unacceptable. PLUS, it you're going to be camping off grid, you're again faced with no access to a recharge station without also towing a ridiculously large generator AND a pile of gas or Diesel to run it. When the alternative for a gas/Diesel truck is just carrying a small auxiliary fuel tank (if any), the EV pickup just does not make sense for long distance, and off-grid use.

Something I could never get my head around was why in the sequel to An Inconvenient Truth, we see Al Gore still driving a gas SUV, when he surely could afford an EV. This was particularly weird since in the first movie he had advocated we move to electric transportation. Well, no matter what anyone says, or does, EVs are still the way forwards (though we also need less expensive, smaller/better use-case options going forward, not more luxury speed monsters).
I mean, EVs still have a lot of issues. Number one being variety, which is better now, but until recently it was basically just Tesla. And Tesla has a load of issues in and of itself. I would never own one, even if I could afford one. Plus, mile range and charging times are a factor. Thank you all at Frontline for your work on this. The most important issue of a lifetime, of a species.

The first doctor recieves money from the company that provides the debilitating and potentially deadly treatment. For every patient on it the doctor gets a heafty cut from the manufacturer. The manufacturer also makes the stuff that gave you cancer.

It’s a very simple car with a 4 cylinder ivtec engine and my son can’t afford a Tesla as he is also going to school online mostly at home and he only makes $23,000 a year at a home improvement store near our house.🙂

I have nothing against EVs, I'll probably try to get one when my current car dies, but you won't catch me dead in a tesla.
John Kerry flies a private jet. A one-person war on the climate. WTF does he do that can't be done on a Zoom call? Oh, the prostitutes, I forgot about what they do after hours.
I don't like that either. Al Gore pushes for clean energy, so why not do everything you can as a high profile climate change activist to drive EVs and practice what you preach? I feel the same exact way about Leonardo DiCaprio, who is another climate change activist. Why does he continue to fly private jets all around the world? You guys are high profile powerful people with more money than anyone is ever going to see in their lifetime, why don't you practice what you preach?
The love of money and power will have people destroy their own world... these billionaires dont give af about you
Superb documentary as usual from pbs.
Propaganda. Effective and well produced. Whitman said it all, caps on carbon was virtue signaling, it did nothing for the climate
And the doubting of science seeds. Sown then are blossoming today.
Cheney, a conservative, putting his love of money before the land his Creator entrusted to him. Thoughts and prayers as another conservative burns for eternity.
The devil has kept him alive with six heart operations. No wonder he must have all the lights on in every room he's in, as he fears the dark and the devil waiting for his soul to be dragged down to hell where he belongs!!

I saw a bunch of Biden voters putting gasoline in their cars. They are just as responsible as Dead Dick is. Or more.
And Cigs never cause cancer ...said tobacco ...
I wonder how they'll keep behaving like this if crude oil and petroleum reserves run out in a couple of decades.
The sooner the better.
It wont. And they know that.
Okay, this three part series is turning out to be very interesting, I'm on part 2 and I'm totally glued to this, good work Frontline.
I used to loathe George W. Bush and couldn't stand him. I thought he was the dumbest President we ever had. Then we got Donald Trump, and now I stand corrected. #45 is now the head of that class, lol. Sorry GW. I was wrong about you good sir.
Oh yes! I agree. And kudos to all the politicians and industry types who have not succumbed to a bad case of pride issues. (Dishonesty)
USA will be ravaged horribly by climate change--as well as the rest of the world!!!!!

Brandon.
You weren't wrong, he was one of the worst and still is, though Trump(ers) have found a new level of slime to roll in! GW Jr. said it himself, "At least I'm not the worst president ever now." No, GW, you're not, but with Cheney running YOU and our evil govt, you're still damned close!!
Trump is smarter than all of those who came before him combined. He exposed the MSM for the liars that they are. He made them become censors. He exposed fake news. What more can you ask from a single person? Trump's IQ is 15 pts. higher than Obamas and 30 pts. higher than Bidens. At least. GHB may have come closer. Rest of them were sub morons.
God Bless America and I Truly mean That ! . .. after watching both episodes. Thanks to PBS and its Frontline investigative Documentary.
I have always got a job, that I can walk to. I can pay all my bills
on foot, as well . BRILLIANT 🚶♀️
I'm watching part3 tonight
All major oil producing companies and governments must establish a global trust fund to finance the restoration of the climate.
What does that mean? Nothing has happened.
I agree. They must invest big time in planting mangroves, etc. to absorb CO2. They must invest big time in renewable energy.
@@MinusEighty I agree with Ed Denoy. They must invest big time in planting mangroves, etc. to absorb CO2. They must invest big time in renewable energy.
@@karimshariff2702 We are already switching to renewable power. Exxon has nothing to do with power, oil is used to fuel cars not to provide electricity. Oil use will go down as we ramp up evs which is happening at a very rapid rate. So no hand wringing is necessary.
@@MinusEighty
How is electricity (coal) renewable?
The fact that climate change started started more than 1k years ago should not be ignored.
I appreciate your work Frontline! I’ve learned so much from you guys and feel smarter just watching lol
Money, and the greed of men, will kill us all. I'm an Atheist, but this saying has meaning for me.
"What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?" - Mark 8:36
You know what's messed up is all these oil companies that are so incredibly good at drilling Wells if they could just drill a little bit farther they could hit the hot enough crust of the Earth that would give us all the energy that we could ever need and never have to burn another fossil-fuel again. Geothermal power generation can never be depleted should be the only thing this world consumes for energy and it's there just waiting for us to tap into it. Anybody that reads this comment please look farther into this and understand that the technology is there it's just the fossil fuel Giants of the world will keep it down as long as they can
That would be rather problematic on the drilling equipment .
Can't make money on free energy. Greed is the death knell of empathy and good sense.
I appreciate your work ! I’ve learned so much from you
imagine that the future of our planet was decided in a tuesday meeting 10:00 to 10:30 am
The beauty of all this is that the catastrophe has arrived right now so that generation that refused to make even symbolic sacrifices on behalf of the climate will lose everything and suffer the full measure of punishment for their reckless irresponsibility.
Part 2 was pretty tepid. If you're going to produce a multi-part, multi-hour long documentary about the biggest story of our time, then there needs to be a more aggressive confrontation with the facts on the ground. PBS produced arguably the best documentary on the 2008 financial crisis that has ever been made, I expect the same level of detail and quality for a documentary about Big Oil.
Then you should know that out of three, 2 is always the weakest episode of most series, and movies for that matter.
@@TheCommunicationCoach Every single episode of Money, Power and Wall Street was as hard-hitting as the last.
@@cwidd1929 It is a little tepid. They need to hammer that money dominated every decision these corps make. If it doesn't benefit their shareholders - deny deny deny.
@@CornOnDeCobb Frontline needs to be careful to cater to its funding sources.
What's disturbing is not that someone has a stick in their eye that is blinding them, it is they don't have enough sense to take the stick out of their eye so that they can see.
This was at about the same time I saw TV ads funded by big oil, that claimed that more CO2 would be great, aka everything greener. And I'm like yeah BS.
Why would a warmer earth not be an improvement? Certainly, better than it is getting colder. More CO2 improves crop yields. Warming allows more land for farming. But it's not getting warmer. Not even 1 deg f IN 45 YEARS.

Just watch the three-part series a few more times. Better yet read the book Merchants of Doubt by Erik M. Conway and Naomi Oreskes. It has hundreds and hundreds of footnotes and references to the source materials. A book, a mind, and a parachute all function best when they are opened. Happy reading.
Superb programming!
What is needed is to bring down the monopolies to realize that there needs to be a more comprehensive coarse of action and thus far remove their own current narrative and of the information that is factual. Break them up into smaller identities! We believe that everyone has one voice and one vote. Our vote must be counted for what we believe. Monopolies not only counter productive our grievances but they control the narrative so that your vote doesn’t make a difference. They have powerful lobbyists who do whatever it takes for them to keep doing what they are doing. No company should have this much power!
The word you want is entities not identities.
THANK YOU 😊
Future generations will not look kindly upon us.

why dont they make all houses white? mirrors for roofs
News Flash, Frontline will redo this documentary in 2045 talking about 2023, and how it all could have been different...lol
this is all so depressing and hard to watch but it's important to know how we got here and who is responsible
It's Never too late to do the Right things. Do something on Climate Change is better than doing nothing.
At the end of the day, we see clearly tht "money run things" no matter if the data shows how obviously serious the situation is.
People vote for that.
