Vettel on helmet design rule: It’s major BS
Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen are the latest to criticise Formula 1’s helmet design regulations, with the former describing it as “major BS”.
The rule hit the headlines at the Russian Grand Prix when Daniil Kyvat wanted to use a special livery at his home race with the one-off design reflecting the colours of the Russian flag.
However, drivers are only allowed to change their design once per year and Kvyat had already used his allocation at the Italian Grand Prix.
The Toro Rosso driver described the regulation as “a joke - but anyway, the rule is a rule”, but it later emerged that the likes of Vettel and Max Verstappen had used several different designs over the season.
They got away with it though as they didn’t seek permission from the FIA.
When asked for his thoughts on the matter, Vettel said via Motorsport.com: “Well, I change it [my helmet the design] anyway so… It’s our helmet and we should be free to do what we want, so I think the rule is major BS.
“We have very little room left to sort of express ourselves and the helmet is probably the only one and if people like it, that’s great, if they don’t like it well it’s not their helmet.
“So I think we should be in charge for designing which way and which colour our helmet has.”
Red Bull driver Verstappen was also asked for his opinion and the Dutchman believes it is “cool” when you can change your lid every now and again.
“I agree. I always loved when Seb was at Red Bull and changing his helmet every race, almost, more or less,” he said. “It was cool because you were just like ‘what is he coming up with now?’.
“I do a few but I’m not going to say I will do a different helmet every race because it’s just too much effort in designing the helmet but I think if you want to make it blue or red, the next race, why not? It’s your crash helmet and you should be able to do what you want.
“Of course in the past, there have been drivers who have always had the same helmet and then they say ‘yeah, but that’s how we can distinguish the drivers’.
“But at the end of the day we have massive numbers on the side, we have a halo on the top, so let us do what we want with the helmet now.
“It’s very nice to have a different design every year because it’s a bit boring always to keep the same helmet.”

Driver numbers - hard to read from a distance
Driver helmets - sometimes very useful for identifying drivers.
Overall I think it's good to have a consistent helmet to help driver identity, however other methods need to be used as well.

The helmet graphics only work for endorsement when the driver is out of the car, and specifically for camera lenses.
Since, for a good reason, the drivers head is so well protected and hidden away between sideboards, and under the halo, the audience identifies less with each driver by helmet liveries than in the past. I think each driver should be able to have his own choice of livery for the halo, since it now occupies the "area visible" that was once occupied by the helmet.

Great video, loved it! I absolutely agree that it is almost impossible to see the driver's helmet when they are sitting in the car, almost hidden by the halo and the high lateral cockpit walls. it is a shame, in a way, as with the old cars it was really exciting to be able to see the driver's head and face. During the recent Mexican GP, even at the track and very close to the cars, I found the easiest way to identify them was the yellow markings on the T-cam. I think it is an anachronistic rule that should go away. In defense of the rule, though, one might say, perhaps rightly so, that time and repeated use is what makes helmet designs iconic, so wearing a special design for just one race does not help in that sense. But I think drivers should be given the freedom to decide if they want to stick to a single design or change it whenever they want.

The drivers should be allowed 3 helmet designs throughout the year. Their main design, one for their home grand prix, and one for a team event. If a driver doesn't have a home grand prix on the calendar, then they get a free design to use as they wish.

I personally like the idea of 1 helmet design for the driver, just like you said about Senna's helmet. It's iconic, it's classic, the moment you see the yellow back with the green and blue stripes you know who it it's, even if it's not in a helmet, it could be a t-shirt and you still would recognize it.
On the other hand, with the halo, the numbers, the camera color, I don't think it's necessary anymore to help the audience recognize the drivers. I still like the idea of an identity, the idea of being linked to your personal design, your brand, but at this point I think that the drivers should be free to do whatever they want.
If I was a F1 driver I would try to stick with 1 design for my entire career.

I’d love for helmets to be free choice, maybe a good compromise would be that: A driver can change they’re helmet once a season, as well as, being able to have a helmet for a special event and the option to have a custom helmet for a home race (if applicable), totalling in 3 changes permitted per year? Maybe...

Wear what they want, I always look at the numbers first.
Fave one is the design of the London Rowing Club worn by Graham Hill, the Damon had a very similar one out of respect for his late father, and when his son started racing, I'm pretty sure he wore the same design. Pity he decided racing wasn't for him, at least that's what I heard. He wasn't bad for a rookie (never behind the wheel of a car before racing in the Ginetta Juniors on the BTCC circuit, IIRC. He made some spectacular overtakes in his first race then binned it, but you could see the talent. But he should do what makes him happy. It was his idea originally, I'm sure).

I hate to be that guy who says thing were better in the past, but when I started watching F1 in 97-98 ad a kid one of the biggest factors that made me to relate to drivers was that helmet designs were simple and they used same design sometimes their whole career. Back then it was easy to identify drivers like Hill, Villeneuve, MS, Coulthard, Häkkinen, Frentzen, Alesi etc. Since then designs have become a lot more complex and impossible to differentiate at first glance. This is why I think Vettel has maybe the best current helmet design. But the design trend is what it is, it's cool that drivers can express themselves with designs. I'd go maybe with one permanent change and 2 special one off designs per season.

  • @scottthornley5405

I think that drivers should have zero restrictions on what helmet cosmetic design they use.
That said, I think that in years to come, those that change helmet designs constantly may regret doing so. Think of just how immediately you can identify Senna's, Stewarts, Hunts helmets... Having a good bit of constancy may not be such a bad thing.

I think it should be up to the drivers to choose whether they want to change their helmet livery each race or whenever they want, or just stick to one livery for the whole season. They should have all the freedom in the world. And I think drivers like Vettel, Ricciardo, (which are the main drivers that always change their helmet liveries), are slowly paving the way to getting the FIA to get rid of that rule.

  • @truckerallikatuk

They should have their home race and one other race chosen in advance. Plus an option for special events like the Button tsunami helmet and the Nikki Lauda memorial helmets. Any other changes should be done with 6 months notice to allow the race organisers to have the right helmets in the media. Sure, that would allow Vettel to line up a season of different helmets, but he'd have to do it all in advance.

  • @ImThe5thKing

I say let the drivers do what they want, and the team can make a certain part of the car (mirrors, wing supports, halo, etc) a different color to really help differentiate drivers. It can even tie into that team's colors. Ex: Max has a navy blue part, Albon has a red part or vice versa, Lewis has a Mercedes Teal part, Bottas has a silver or black part or vice versa. This is how a lot of teams in WEC do it, and it works. I could always tell who was who when looking at 2 Ford GTs in Le Mans because one had green accents, one had blue, one had red, and one had yellow. Didn't even have to look at the car numbers

  • @mb2000

I think as long as the helmet’s functionality isn’t impaired in any way, then the design should be allowed to change as the driver wants/as the team can afford. Myself, I don’t really notice the helmets, whether they change or not, unless a commentator or someone draws particular attention to it. That said, I love the creativity of it.

of course they should be able to change designs.. as often as they like..I think it brings out the personalities of the drivers.
.. my fave helmet designs are all bike though..
Rossi, Sheene, Kenny Roberts, ,Joey Dunlop (simple and totaly iconic in the bike world), The bug eyes of John Cooper, (and kind of reprised by Nakano), Doohan, to name but a few.
It has to be noted though that bike racer lids are also used to market and sell replicas
I also love the way that colours are now associated with a motogp rider, so Rossi is dayglo yellow, Matc is red and you can see whole sections of the crowd at tracks set aside for the fan clubs all in the respective colours.
.. BTW check out some of Rossis one off lids, .. the one with his face on the front is brilliant, and the donkey one he wore following a big mistake at the previous round spring to mind.

Helmet designs shouldn’t at all be regulated. If it’s for identifying drivers, force them to put the driver number on the Halo like Haas does, and Sauber did in 2018. I’d love to see the designs these guys come up with, cause I know for sure that some of these guys are extremely artistic. I want to see a driver for themselves, and part of that is the helmet design.
And, in Kvyats case, it’s his home race, no rules should stop any driver from bringing in a cool design for their home race.

With regards to the rule.... I believe there are 22 races next season, let the drivers have 10 races where they can have any design they want(provided the design is submitted to the FIA by the start of the previous race) and then 12 races where they have to wear the same design(that didn't come out right but I suspect most people will get the gist of what I mean)....seems fair, both sides get a little bit, drivers get some freedom and the FIA gets some consistency.......

I'm on the fence about the whole issue ( wether they should stick to a similar design to cement their identity like Schumacher or Sena, or wether they should just go crazy ) but yeah I'd rather we had clearer distinguishing elements on the cars themselves, the helmets are too busy and convoluted to be able to tell who is who at 200 mph with low bitrates anyway.
Black/Yellow camera color means you have to learn by heart for 20 drivers who is who so it's a no go as well for me. Imo they should have their initials near the driver numbers at the front and on the sides of the car.

The whole reason drivers have their own helmet design is to help us easily identify them. That doesn't work if they change them at every race.
The most iconic designs to me are Senna's, Graham/Damon Hill's, Hunt's and Stewart's. They're iconic because they're simple and because they never really changed. None of the current crop of drivers have an iconic design because a. they're all too busy and overdesigned and b. they change them all the time so we never really learn to associate one particular design with a driver.

Senna's bottom stripe on his helmet was never black. It was always navy blue. People also confound the deep blue with black because of photo exposures, that tend to darken the low ranges to expose the high ones properly. A case in point was Jim Clark's helmet, the navy blue and white lid representing the colors of the Scottish flag. A lot of people thouht his helmet was black.

Let's just adjust the rules and compromise.
    1. Make every driver eligible to change their helmet for their home grand prix.
    2. Allow for a "sentimental" helmet change for one grand prix a year to maybe honor the deceased or support a cause they are passionate about
    3. Allow one more "free" change for one final grand prix that does not need an explicit reason.
That allows for 4 helmet designs per year. One being the main design and 3 allowed alternate designs. Also, make it mandatory that sponsors must be present on every helmet design EXCEPT the sentimental one.
