The reason they did not release this movie in theaters is because it would get censored. Releasing it on Netflix allows the movie to be uncut, without censorship. Plus it was dubbed in other languages so it was able to reach a wider audience base.

yeah true..i also didn’t expect her to sing so well,especially alongside diljit coz he is great..But,she did quite a good job..I would say her punjabi was not as good as diljit but they say in the movie that she has a city accent,so that covers it up..Her acting was also quite subtle nd mature especially considering some other imtiaz’s actresses like nargis,sara ali khan etc..
i would like to say that Chamkila songs did portray the male gaze but with him was also Amarjot, who portrayed female gaze too. Loved the review.

However, during the look test for the role of Geetanjali (portrayed by Rashmika Mandanna in 'Animal'), Sandeep felt that Parineeti didn't quite fit the character. He admitted, "Actually, galti mera hi hai. I said, ‘Ho sake toh maaf karo mujhe (It's my fault. I told her to forgive me).’ Kuch kuch characters kuch kuch logo ko set nahi hota hai (Some things are not meant to be)."
Parineeti didn't walked out, Sandeep replaced him thinking Rashmika would fit the role better.

Born in wrong times. After rockstar this was a movie which touched something inside of me in terms of religion, society, politics and hypocrisy built around it. Chamkila was just Niki Minaj or Ariana grande or any pop artist from today but born in wrong times. I’m sure this is still prevalent in India, esp in rural India. But he was a real artist, how many minds he must have challenged and changed, how many minds he must have inspired to be themselves, how many unnecessary taboos he must have broken, that’s what real artists do. And that’s what Imitaz Ali, AR Rahman, Diljit Dosanj and Parineeti Chopra did by playing such pivotal roles in bringing this story to us. It was a beautifully put together art piece❤

I found it hard to understand Punjabi Lyrics but watched it all because they put lyric translation on screen. That was a very nice and thoughtful touch by the Chamkila Team! Diljeet and Pareenti are shining through and through and supporting caste also makes the story feel very real. Great actors on board ❤️ Really enjoyed it 🎉

The way Imtiaz Ali took this up from the grassroots of Punjab & brought it up on the screen is commendable...and he had the perfect role-model in Diljit Dosanjh for his sense & sensibility of the subject...The song ' Ishq Mitaye' gives you goosebumps as it perfectly resonates with the situations back then..
' जब तक हम हैं, स्टेज पर हैं...और जीते-जी मर जाएं इससे अच्छा है मर के ज़िंदा रहें !!...That line defines the film ! Great work Mr Director, the whole team should be proud of their work ...We are !!

Chamkila is legend. He is way way bigger than the songs he is known for. We still listen his religious songs in punjab. And also songs which people call ashleel. Legend forever

Can u imagine if this movie was directed by vanga..The glorification of diljit’s character would have been so extreme..The male gaze,raunchy lyrics at least 2 kg sex jokes for no reason..Chamkila portrayed as some kind of alpha who sees women as objects..Instead,imtiaz ali did such a beautiful and honest portrayal of how this guy wrote what he heard around him and what could sell more without sugarcoating anything..
Although He was here for a very short time to live yet he will shine forever....there is so much about him to show to this world.......a good effort by imtiaz sir....l live just a few kilometres away from his village....and was a few kilometres away from mehsumpur where he was shot dead along with his crew.....the gunshots still haunts me😢

the hypocrisy in some people berating Animal while lauding Chamkila is laughable. The main idea of the character in the movie Chamkila is about the freedom of expression, the discussions on who gets to decide what is right or wrong.

And the masterstroke in not in Casting the romantic director, and the most soft spoken humbled man, and what image he has in society, more than anything else. He said all the things because it was Diljit, if it was Sanju baba or any controversial name, this film would be thrown under the bus.
After slumbering through film after film, Imtiaz Ali finally delivers what he had promised, but failed to fully deliver in films like Rockstar and Tamasha. He’s truly back but I hope he keeps making exceptional movies like this. Diljit was brilliant and Parineeti did a great job.
Parineeti was so beautiful 🤩 and also voice to . Diljit was a great performer.
What a wonderfully crafted movie. Impossible to segregate Dosanjh and Chamkila, so good did he act. Imtiaz brought out the Punjab hinterland so well. Parineeti gave total support in acting and singing. The side actors were too good. Full marks. After the dismal Sam Bahadur this is a not a biopic to be missed. No hero, so many frailties and yet he conquers you.

Music was excellent..lol just like this reviewer said MAIDAAN was bland, seems to have taken the safer route of trying to almost neglect the music aspect but underplaying its contribution 😆. We all know what's happening back stage.

Rashmika has worst role in animal ,has no work. Parineeti made an good decision.
Getting excited to check this out ASAP. Was already quite intrigued with the team and the subject matter.
After watching this movie it's safe to say that Parineeti made the right decision when she left Animal for this masterpiece.
This movie would have felt more awesome in Theaters as this is all about music. Indeed a pure cinematic experience after a while.😊

The movie demands a lot of effort from audience to comprehend it's narrative and craft. Also, the Hindi lyrics appear in Roman script instead of Devanagari. It's not worth the effort.
It is one thing to admire Chamkila's story and Rehman's music, but it's not necessary that one would like this movie.

Why not release the movie in theatres?
The compulsory Hindi subtitle in Roman script created hiccups in the freely-flowing story and cinematography that could have been delectable if these subtitles weren't compulsorily there😕.
This movie is perfect and outstanding in every sense.Never seen such a flawless direction and acting by the whole cast.Rahman is truly legend.👏👏👏👏

Randeep Hooda and bhumi pandrekar match more with the personality of chamkila and Amarjot.......chamkila.was robust and tall .💯💯💯💯💯 even though i am a fan of diljit and parineeti.and this powerful biopic should have been a theater release ....feel so sad for what evil people did to such talented people ...especially that woman reporter who spoilt things for them by publishing in news papers against them , she should be sued .....
Why was nothing told about Parineeti and her acting in this review? Why is all the buzz about Diljit alone? - riding the wave? Why is her name not mentioned in the header, where as its is for Diljit? I saw Chamkila and was awestruck by both Parineeti and Diljit's performance. I just think she does not get the credit that she deserves. Its time he give her the credit.

Only critical feedback - the comic strip narration was off-putting. Imtiaz could have spent a little more money and made all those parts shot in real. Cz that gave a very comical outlook to an otherwise impactful narration of the persona that was Chamkila. Esp the terrace breaking scene... would have looked so much better if had been shot in real.
The comical strips part makes the movie lose something and disconnects each time it comes on!
