Yakuza was just more appealing for the mainstream.. Shenmue was a little slow for today's "short attention span", which resulted in dwindling numbers of RPG games overall.. games where you walk around and talk to people, and watch a bunch of cut scenes. Shenmue 3 only happened because of so many loyal fans who are a bit older now.
MetaKnuxXbeats thanks! I've always wanted to see this subject get something close to a thorough treatment. I just got tired of waiting and decided to give it a shot myself. I'm sure there is plenty more VF stuff in there I missed
Matt Hugh dude why are you complaining about a game that hasn't even been announced yet, what you're saying isn't necessarily going to be the case especially since the series did improve from one title to the next. Also your arguments are extremely subjective because 1.visual appeal is dependent on individual taste 2. sub-par animation isn't necessarily game breaking (though in some cases it certainly can be) look at how well injustice and mk did despite having janky in-game animations 3. just because you weren't satisfied doesn't mean everybody else won't be, as evidenced by the hefty amount of people who enjoys this franchise and still play it. Bottom line don't go jumping to conclusions on things you clearly know nothing about
At the time I wasn't aware of it, but going on with the storline, especially during Shenmue 2, you have that definite feeling of being in a Virtua Fighter spinoff of sort.
Wow. This was good. I didn't know that Ryo shared moves and attitude with Jacky. Wasn't there a Virtua Fighter that was kind of like an RPG on Ps2? I remember ads for it calling it Kingdom hearts but with vf characters.
Phoenix Splash TV thanks bro. Yeah that would be Virtua Quest. I've been playing through it recently and am almost at the end. It's pretty interesting. Definitely not very good though lol!
The problem is twofold: between arcade and console, VF5 could be considered a modest commercial success at best, and there has to be an artistic reason to continue the series. If a new VF game fails to offer anything substantial over the currently existing games, it would absolutely be the final nail in the coffin for the series. Not to say that VF6 won't ever happen, but it's a much more delicate situation than I think most realize.
Virtua Bros Above all else, they need to find the right time to do it. Shenmue 3 makes more sense today than it did five years ago because of the popularity of Yakuza, which is obviously heavily influenced by Shenmue. This next wave of 3D fighters could make or break our chances of a new VF game in the near future.
Great video Segalacious! I'm glad VF will live on though Shenmue, but I'm still sort of sad Shenmue 3 is not attached to Sega. This means there might not be any VF or other Sega game references.
The only RPG that I had play which had both Akira Yuki (Virtua Fighter) and Ryo Hazuki (Shenmue) as playable character was in the crossover RPG, Project X Zone 2 for Nintendo 3DS which was a joint collaboration between Nintendo, Sega, Namco, and Capcom. I'm planning to play through Shenmue 1 & 2 soon but not on modern consoles, it will be on my old Dreamcast.
where do you find this stuff,so much dedication LMAO hopefully the latest shenmue installment and the 1 & 2 re-releases does well enough to spark segas interest in the next virtua fighter, had they gone with the vf rpg idea it wouldve been perfect for explaining the lore of the series, or maybe even mixed the two
Fruari fry Haha I guess I have sort of an unhealthy obsession with Shenmue and VF :D. Actually, there are some interesting tidbits in shenmue peripheral storylines that do flesh out the VF universe more. I'm going to explore this a little in the near future :)
Oh wow, this was such an amazing video. There are so many interesting VF references I never even considered or realized. Sarah’s duality being channeled through Izumi and Chunyan makes so much sense, it honestly makes me love these characters even more! Speaking of which, I’ve gone through some of Shenmue’s unused animations and I’ve found a lot of other moves borrowed from Virtua Fighter. I was even able to trigger Jacky Bryant's victory pose in game through glitching (I hope this doesn’t get flagged as spam, but here’s a short video about it - th-cam.com/video/23mKehtFPtE/w-d-xo.html ), so the Ryo - Jacky parallel isn't too unreasonable! Probably just a case of porting assets between the games, but still pretty neat. :)
The chance for VF6 to happen won't be for a while. I predict maybe in the next 2 or 3 years before a new VF happens, we can think of Shenmue as a VF game much like Urban Reign, and The Bouncer is to Tekken, and Tobal.
Silver Haired Devil I fully agree with you there. Also what was that one game with nina, death by degrees? I guess that's more like the equivalent of Virtua quest lol
Yeah It was Death By Degrees, Never played it. Guess it was Namcos attempt to create a Tekken spin off. I do want to point out that the 1st person mode originally was supposed to be in VF1 before it was scrapped.
Really fascinating vid. Was great to see some of the early Shenmue footage from the Saturn. I'm not real familial with Virtua Fighter, but knew some of the characters were capsule toys in the first Shenmue. Know I know why :)
