- Both games took me 57.8 hours of gameplay. I love the atmosphere and the different soundtracks for every area in this open world game. For 1999 and 2001 the games were ahead of it's time for their environmental storytelling, but over 20 years later the tedious gameplay is outdated in my opinion because most of the times the game felt like a chore to play. I am happy I played both games, but if given the choice I would never play them again. I understand why Shenmue is loved by many, but I also recognize it's not my type of videogame, I enjoy more linear story game experiences.

Shenmue is an action-adventure game series created, produced and directed by Yu Suzuki. Shenmue and Shenmue II were developed by Sega AM2 and published by Sega for the Dreamcast. Shenmue II was later released in 2002 to Western markets by Microsoft Game Studios and ported to the Xbox console. Originally released for the Dreamcast in 2000 and 2001, Shenmue I & II is an open world action adventure combining jujitsu combat, investigative sleuthing, RPG elements, and memorable mini-games. It pioneered many aspects of modern gaming, including open world city exploration, and was the game that coined the Quick Time Event (QTE). It was one of the first games with a persistent open world, where day cycles to night, weather changes, shops open and close and NPCs go about their business all on their own schedules. Its engrossing epic story and living world created a generation of passionate fans, and the game consistently makes the list of “greatest games of all time”.
Underrated game series. Shenmue 3 and the anime are pretty good too. I hope we get 4 and 5 one day
Wait. 3 and anime. I feel like Patrick star atm. Underneath a fckn rock.
3 was the biggest disappointment ever.
Food & stamina meter were more frustrating than working 45 days on the docks in Shenmue 1 😂
Great video. I needed this. Thanks. Millennial and Shenmue fan, so proud to see this series get recognized by the younger generation. Thanks again.
Oh, I did want to mention: you can actually correct mistakes when using the telephone. I remember thinking that it's a fair tradeoff of realism because in real life if you make a mistake when dialing a rotary phone you do have to hang up and try again. Press B to cancel the last number you put in. Ryo just keeps dialing numbers without having to restart.
The uniqueness of Shenmue is also that each person has their own life and daily routine, like never before in a video game.
Furthermore, in Shenmue 2, the attention to detail is so incredible that, in addition to being able to enter buildings with 70 floors, you can visit every room on every floor. This is something that doesn't exist in any other game.
The level of detail is unmatched. For those who haven’t played Shenmue 1 and 2 yet,
I still recommend finish thoses games before watching the video, as it does contain spoilers, especially for Shenmue 2.
I played these games few years ago and my mind was blown about how immersive they were. The cities feel like actual lived places. The NPC's are more interactive than in any modern games I've personally played and you can interact with the environments and items. I also love the retro feel of it, the graphics, the silly voice acting and all the retro jankiness. I have to admit that I didn't finish Shenmue 2 cause I got stuck at some point. At this point I might start a new playthrough from the start of the first game and then continue to Shenmue 3.
Maybe its because I'm autistic but I enjoyed the harbour work with the forklift 😅
saw the nature in the intro, thought „guilin?“, looked it up and yes. This game engrained the name of a beautiful piece of chinese nature into my memory.
countryside or wildlife is maybe more what I was after
In game clocks were in games in the 2000s because it was a bridge between real life and gaming that had never been done before. Kinda like the randomized weather and environmental conditions.
Just - nothing like that had been done before and made the game all the more immersive
Furthermore, if you played on Dreamcast, the VMU would display Christmas stuff if you played on or around Christmas, etc. That WOWED me as a 20-year old playing the game back in 1999
A Boulder hat
Yeah I caught that one.
a bolder hat. his hat is more bold than other hats
Working is the worst way to make money in shenmue 2. I hope at some point you just gambled, cause you can win big in like 2 minutes lmaoo
Yep found this by accident lol I saved before and won a crap ton of money the first time. Good luck lol!
My favorite non-online game. This game was brilliant. My son, daughter and I played all 3 Shenmue games. Sorry you didn't think that much of it.
Based game series
i remember being stuck forever on the forklift gig because i always took the wrong way for the game to progress. I was working for weeks before i decided to give up. Eventually, picked the game up again, took a different route on the forklift and the game progressed. They were great games from what i remember playing them at 13.
Shenmue 1 , in retrospect, was and is a historical achievement of innovation and storytelling. Its controlls have aged poorly, but the overall activities of the game are really great as a life sim/walking sim with detective gameplay and light combat.
Part 2 ups the combat events, so if you want more combat, definitely play part 2
Shenmue 3 should of been a side story, it was so underwhelming and felt so unfinished ( cuz it was) , it also was a massive financial and critical/fan flop.
Part 3 is definitely for hardcore fans. You could perhaps see it as its own game as something okay for players that have no investment in the series, seeing it as a cozy life sim in china. but 3 is so unworthy of being part of the main games.
Overall i think Shenmue 1 can and does stand on its own as the best the series has to offer
I don't understand the complaints. The game is amazing and fun throughout.
One is, honestly, my favourite videogame of all time and two is not far behind. I was monumentally disappointed with number three though. 😖
Technically 2 is the best, but I think I enjoyed the story a little more in 1. 3 wasn't a patch on 1 or 2.
With due respect, it's a generational thing. I know because I constantly Minecraft, Roblox, GTA, and all those modern games.
Fire
Bro... I remember playing one of these games as a kid and you had to go dial a number on the pay phone, I never got further than that haha
Feels like bethesda ai in some regards. Really ahead of its class 8n such a year.
One of the hardest games you ever played? I don't know how many games you've played, but it seems too long of a stretch for me, personally i would say the game just doesn't give you direct orders to where to go, and compared to modern games it is underwhelming, really.
Playing for the first time rn, just got in the Kowloon part, and is a very tedious but weirdly immersive and magical experience, can't explain it.
You know you can just gamble instead of working those jobs in 2 right? Playing lucky hit you can make whatever you made at that job faster. Also there's plenty of things to do instead of waiting
In Shenmue 1 I lost all my money at the slot machines and in Shenmue 2 I lost to the plinko but I found the dice guy that goes 50-50 and it's a good way to make money but I found him at the end of my playthrough 😂 I saw a guy on an old forum say to buy a bunch of flashlights in Shenmue 1 from the tomato convenience store and pawn them off in Shenmue 2 to never have to work🤯🤯
Now make one about Shenmue 3
I want to play but i dont have the time or the patience for grindy mechanics anymore.
You said it took you over half an hour to use a rotary phone in game?
You are like an old lady back in 1986. lol,... boy, you young.
