Safety Concerns: Wheels fall off moving school buses within days of each other

- The I-Team is uncovering a serious safety concern with local school buses. There have been at least two recent incidents where wheels flew off the buses while driving in Hillsborough County. Investigator Jarrod Holbrook reveals why the problem doesn't stop there.

Blue Bird buses are usually built with superior quality. Our district gets them regularly because of how high the build quality is. That is shocking to see a quality issue at Blue Bird.
They have a nice feel that they were thoughtfully set up.

As a tire changer, I have noticed that the factory is using some sort of lube on the studds (looks and smells like gear oil) to facilitate the notorious struggle of first time removal, however, this also changes the friction (see illustration in ALKITRONIC video), so just be aware that there will be a tendency to over stress, as there is a tendency to under torque a rusty studd due to increased friction.(you will have to find your torque value by comparing angle aganst torque under "clean and dry "conditions), max torque and over torque may cover this but will eventually lead to stretched, distorted threads, broken studds.

Heavy vehicle's wheels need to be checked very frequently.
I don't think this is Bluebird's fault. I would feel that more busses would have an issue across the nation. It would not hit just one school district. I would wonder about the possibility of vandalism. I saw that the lug nuts where hand tighten with a torque wrench, Does that mean they could also be loosen by hand too?

I thought it was common knowledge that duallies need to be re-torqued after 50km of being installed?

I highly doubt it's a coincidence that all of the busses were bluebird vision busses
But What I call coincidental is it from one school district. This could be vandalism. I would check the security cameras.
What's weird though is it only affects the Vision models. I didn't see any All Americans or Microbirds on the list.
Our school district had these buses like this and the years are 2014-2020 and newer Bluebird Vision school buses I believe that.
I'd rather use spike strips on the school bus before the wheels fly off.

It’s very simple, they make little Devices called, “A Loose Wheel Nut Indicators”
...and different colors can be used to indicate that a torque re check is pending...(after wheel installation about 100 miles or at least a solid day of working), then cooled off.
That is a horrible School District. There could have been serious consequences because of their neglect
This is why you check the lug and hugnuts to make sure they’re on tight and torqued down during every pre-trip. This should have been caught by the bus drivers.

How come the bus didn't go through to your tea before it went on the road if it went through. They were found the problem before it went out and what happened to drivers do not doing the pre-trip I've been in this business over 30 years I am in New York we have the toughest. Inspection in this country that bus company needs to get their act together

Looks to me these drivers ain't doing no damn inspections on their bus before they even take off and they should be checking them lug nuts before they even get on the goddamn bus and drive it

The only solution is to buy Thomas Built Busses instead of bluebird or international, there all prices of crap.

My district have them & they are 2008-2024.
been a big school bus driver about 15yrs, a special ed. van driver 2yrs before that & a special ed. van aide 4yrs prior.... a total of 21yrs. in the school bus system & we we're always thought to check lugnuts & tires our selves just to cover our own end regardless of which mech. did what & when or even if brand new from manufacturer to main baseyard that gets delivered to other baseyards... (Cover Your Own Ass) if you find a problem write it in the DVCR maintenance book & make sure the mech. knows about it before taking it out. if you feel unsafe about it bring it up with the mech. & your dispatch/manager to make them aware of it. if they say "oh it's ok to use" without fixing the problem then get it in writing stating what was said about using the vehicle & claim that "you as the driver will not be held reliable or responsible for anything that happens while in use" ... BELIEVE ME I KNOW , I'VE BEEN THERE BEFORE. another contributing factor is shared vehicles. everyone drives different.

🤬 Hello and good day to all,What the fucking hell are hiring today, It's call pre trip inspection which calls for taking a lug socket a extension bar a a long ratchet drive and you check every lug nut on the vehicle.If a driver See's something he or she is to ground the vehicle.Also the garage has meachanics that work at night all they do is check bus all the time and refill them everynight we would retorque all of the lug nuts and clean all buss what happened to responsible employee?

Bottom line is the PDI wasn't done, it was faked. No wonder Bluebird is on the verge of going under. You can forget selling anymore buses to Hillsborough assholes !!! They will be buying C2's. What happened was bad enough, but to deny it and try to throw it back on the customer can and will kill your company reputation, which they have little left of anyway.
