The m1961 Butt Pack along with our web gear, ammo/frag pouches, two canteens, bayonet, poncho, poncho liner, first aid pouches...were meant as our fighting load...the weight was distributed as evenly as possible around the pistol belt...most rifleman carried a bandolier and about two hundred rounds of 5.56 ammo on his person.....Sustainment gear was carried in the tropical lightweight ruck...the Butt pack (when used) often carried a C.RAT, extra socks, bug dope, toothbrush, TP, and not much more.
Poncho and liner were usually secured under the top lid to prevent them from hanging up on and being lost in the bush....of course no one worried about getting hypothermia in the jungles of Nam so no one needed to carry shelter halves or wool blankets....atvb...woods

@Tolik L. While the SSO web gear was and still is great stuff...it was not developed until the 1990's and never saw service in the time period being discussed.
The Russians, Brits, Australian and Canadian forces borrowed heavily from the USA M1956 web gear...so at the time, thats all there was...no arguing about who's was better...atb...woods

Thats cool to hear how you guys carried your load out. I figured that was about all you were fitting in the m1961. I also guessed flares or spare batteries might go in there too

Your mistake was not using the suspenders with the web belt. I would use the belt cushion too, but I'm also over 60.

    • @MilitaryHistoryGearReview
      @MilitaryHistoryGearReview  3 ปีที่แล้ว

I did have the suspenders on under the sweater. A belt cushion would have been clutch though hahaha.

@@MilitaryHistoryGearReview ah sorry. Using the belt with and without the suspenders in the military, I found I though it was more comfortable with than without. And I'm not above using a crutch since I left the military with a bad knee. Lol

@@MilitaryHistoryGearReview Cutting up gi foam sleeping pads and tying/zip tying them to the pistol belt for a cushion is a fairly common modification.

Nice one! Sounded like it was long night. Have had a few of those... The mylar blanket wrapped around the wool might be good.

Another good combo if you are running a harness is to use the M1956 suspenders and sleep carrier (spaghetti straps). Your lavvu and blanket will be behind your shoulder blades and can distribute the load without putting everything on the buttpack. If you use the M1967 sleep carrier and either M56 buttpack adapter or M67 suspenders then you can flip it the other way and have the M67 sleep carrier on the back of your belt and have the buttpack up on your back.

In 1972 while assigned to Recon I was taught to hook the front straps of my H harness to the back of the belt, 1 or 2 holes from the butt pack. We carried our gear on the pack with the 200 rounds of ammo up front to balance out the load. Also taught that food was minimal or not required. So not a lot of c- rats. Redo the harness and try again

If you don't already have one, get an East German Combat Pack. I recently purchased one and I love it. It's light weight and waterproof.

Not that system but I do love my Canadian 82 Pattern web gear. Having the gear balanced is everything, same as with a ruck. Using the machine gun ammo pouches to help balance the load really makes a difference!!

Yea. Distributing the load well is absolutely essential. Its what makes external/full frames so nice

The butt pack was designed to sustain a soldier for 3 days, if necessary. A broken down MRE, a change of socks, snivel gear, and a canteen should get you by okay.

I live in Minnesota. That was not cold. But next time you do this. Go with the three log system. Im not a fan of allice equipment. Its nice to have thoe. First you needed the right cloths. That belt and harness was made to be wore out side of the m65 pants and jacket. If you had been wearing them two articles of gear it would not have bothered you. The butt packs have always sucked thoe. I always end up kicking the gear hanging down. Thoe with the rack and pack the butt pack can be a boon. More so if you have light wait gear. You need two lavues

Like the video I use mine with other pouches for stuff in the spring summer and fall but here in Texas we deal more with heat not cold and a poncho liner is usually enough of a blanket and much much lighter. I also run a hammock and tarp so the weight is much less in gear than what you were carrying. I also run two canteens or a canteen and a 2 quart USGI canteen with its own strap

They weren't called ALICE clips back in 1956, they were called slide keepers. When ALICE came out, they kept the keepers and people called them ALICE clips. Not sure why you say owner cut out waterproof liner? That's how they were made, looks like he poked holes in it for a draw string. You have all the weight on back, a manual would of helped you set up LBE. Should have put front snaps on the sides of belt to shift weight more comfortable. Lots of M1956 web gear YT videos.

It's not really a butt back. More like a low hanging backpack. You should show some pics of soldiers in Vietnam using them. The butt pack actually made an appearance in the newish movie, "Da 5 Bloods."

Not sure if cross linking a video is ok but here is a typical day hike kit I run that can easily be made into an overnight kit by adding my hammock and a tarp or poncho th-cam.com/video/M8p3RKYN0OI/w-d-xo.html
