Shouting the name of an attack is a type of mental focus which is why it is so common in magical or mentally trying abilities in order to help reinforce the image of the attack or move. It is also to inform or tip off the watcher about what that character is able to do. It is also so they are better able to remember the effect of that move, especially when it is a part of a group of similar looking attacks of varying power.
A real possibility for the video game elements in anime is because it so easy to show how much they have progressed power wise and this implies that they have progressed as a person just as much.
About the giant eyes bit, I watched this documentary on anime and they discuss this. Eyes are the windows of the soul and large eyes usually portray goodness and innocence while eyes closer being shut, and squinting symbolizes a darker person.
For me, the reason that no one has a shounen anime that hits on older people is that, because when it does, it's now called a "seinen" anime- anime that is aimed at young adults (particularly male). P.S. had to put that out and say it, because no one really adresses that.
Love the pausecast to be honest xD Super hilarious and it's a great to listen to Noble speak while doing other work when you can't always watch the screen! I really enjoyed this ;3 Thank you Noble!
The reason why kids are the ones always saving the world is because most of the people who will read those manga and watch those anime are going to be kids and young people, so they made the protagonist relatable to them, so they will imagine themselves in that situation.
And the prevalence of teenage is because it’s a bit hard to imagine a really young tyke being able to pull things off. A teenager is physically more or less an adult, but still has a lot to learn, making a rather ideal protagonist
On the topic of the dad protagonist there's an anime called "if its for my daughter I'd even fight a demon lord" i haven't seen it but i assume it's pretty much what you're talking about
*beginning plot* A young man (possibly in his 20s) is out on a quest and runs into this little demon girl and takes her in as his daughter. I like this anime because even though it's his adopted daughter he treats her as if she was his own

James Jack Same, it's the thing that put me off To love ru halfway through Darkness and harem anime in general. It's just a giant cocktease of girls throwing themselves at this random nice guy protagonist and him constantly pushing them away because he wants to be good even though there's nothing wrong since the girls want it, being oblivious, dense or being cursed with a tsundere (bitch) that "likes" him but doesn't want to be with him and doesn't want him to be with anyone else either. Rinse and repeat till the end where he chooses no one and everything remains the same.
@MASON CROWbotchski No? She doesn't strike me as a tsundere (at least at the beginning) since she came to earth to try and merk him in the first place, if anything Kotegawa is more of a tsundere in the show. No, in To love ru Rito gets the full blame imo. When I said that I was referring to other harem anime I can't remember the name of.
There are plenty of anime where adults are the protagonists such as Black Lagoon, Area 88, Lupin III, Golgo 13, etc. SaikiK has the parents very involved in a lot of the episodes.
Anime eyes are huge for emotion and stylistic choice. It's easier to read emotions on the face if the eyes are large and a lot of animation in general has characters with larger-than-real life eyes. That and that's the style they're going for, so as long as you can tell a character's a person at a glance, the proportions don't matter all that much if the design works. That's why, not just anime, but a good number of cartoons have gigantic eyes or aren't super realistic with proportions. Also, drawing super realistic characters for animation takes a lot of time and is a pain in the ass.
22:45 I was thinking it’d be cool to have a fantasy story centered around a bitter white mage and his side kick, an infuriatingly optimistic young swordsman who just. Won’t. DIE. So basically, fantasy version of UP
14:45 Oh man, Rika, you have no idea how true your answer is ESPECIALLY in the context of the Japanese, the primary demographic of practically every anime using this plot. Long story short: For most Japanese people, adulthood sucks so badly that their high school years, with all the atrocious pressure from almost every quarter to earn perfect grades to ensure propserity for their future career opporunities, is considered to be more or less the GOLDEN AGE of their lives. Not kidding, some people even did essays on the subject!
29:15 I don't remember the title but there's an anime where the protagonist is afraid of women and while taking a bath he got transported to a planet mostly made up of girls
A little late, but here goes: There was this old web page that listed "The Laws of Anime". And although, they are called "laws", it's more of a general guideline. Maybe a search would be successful into bringing results. It explains a lot of things you discussed in this podcast. The "big eyes" thing is to express the character's emotion. And it's easier with big eyes. About the hair: one of the laws state that every color in the visible light spectrum is considered a natural hair color. Same goes for the eyes. About the shouting the attack's name: one of the laws state that an attacks power is proportional to how loud you say it and inversely proportional to how fast you say it. The louder and slower you say an attack, the more powerful the attack will be. Take Goku's Kamehameha, and Vegeta's Final Flash, for example. And as for the blood in anime: a law establishes that the average anime character has 5.5 gallons of blood or more in its body. For comparison, the average real-life human has 5.5 liters. That's around 1.5 gallons, give or take.
About adults in anime, it's not like there aren't any: Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku My Roomate is a Cat Koboyashi's Dragon Maid Finding shounen anime with an adult cast, now that's where you are out of luck. I mean I would love to see a Dad anime in the same vein as ''that recent Mom isekai with the way too long title, which is actually shorter then this description'', but you know. Who is gonna go out of their way to risk their career to make that, when they could make another cookie cutter?
RE dad protagonists: Well, it's a manga rather than an anime, but check out " I, the Demon Lord, got married to the female hero's mother making her my stepdaughter", or "The Demon Lord’s Second Marriage" as nicknamed by fans. It's all about a long-widowed Demon Lord who is actually not evil falling in love with the inept heroine's saintly beauty of a mother, proposing to her on the spot (and she naturally accepts just as quickly), and spending the rest of the manga juggling his duties as the Demon Lord (which now include improving relations with the human kingdoms he's no longer at war with), trying to get closer to his new wife, and MOST PROMINENTLY trying to be an actually good father to his new stepdaughter (which is complicated by her hating his guts for, well, being the Demon Lord). It's funny, hilarious and heartwarming at the same time. Also, there's this manga revolving around (IIRC) an ex-yakuza who got married to a nice, gorgeous wife and the story revolves around him trying to adjust to the life of normal, law-abiding civilians.
For eyes sure they convey emotion but the true reason is that Osamu Tezuka drew his characters with big eyes and since he’s the god of manga and anime it became a stable of the medium.
Accelerator looks pretty Much Generic if you go by his Hair style As for the Kids being the heroes Hyperdimension Neptunia the animation has Teenaged looking protagonists who work and they transform into More Adult looking
Animes or shows with a main cast of older protagonists or mature (for anime) or a somewhat family-like dynamic. Cowboy Bebop, Space Dandy, One Punch, Dragon Ball (irresponsible adults), Avatar the Last Airbender (closest to a family I've seen), Goblin Slayer, Death Note, Overlord, HunterxHunter (After the anime), Transformers, Batman shows, superman shows, and Bob the Builder.
About the blood thing, I mean have you ever had a nose bleed. Alot of blood happens and the only thing i feel is annoyance that i have to clean this shit up.
41:54 See, that's something that surprised the hell out of me (and probably a lot of other One Piece fans) when Whitebeard finally started fighting in Marineford: he was the first Devil Fruit user in the story who NEVER called out his attacks. It's like he didn't even bother to give any names to what are obviously specific techniques... and you know what? That made him even MORE badass. It's like everyone else NEEDS to come up with awesome-sounding names for their techniques to impress upon both the target and any bystanders how badass the technique and its user are, whereas Whitebeard simply lets his own presence, name and the aftermath of his attacks speak for themselves.
Oh yeah, forgot to mention this about what you guys said about anime eyes and expressiveness: That's why shifty and duplicitious characters (especially villainous ones) by and large tend to have very narrow, angular eyes, if not even have their eyes closed most/all of the time (prime example: Gin from Detective Conan; his eyes just scream "PSYCHOPATHIC AND SADISTIC SERIAL MURDERER").
Because smaller and sharper eyes looks more convincing for a villain. It looks like the eyes of a predatpr, as meanwhile round shaped eyes seems too give of a look of vulnearbility and innocence, like a prey. So it makes sense.
@@raylenn4444 Yeah, though I do note that I talk about a different sort of "narrow" than the one used for more benign characters like "tsurime" eyes, which tend to simply indicate strong-willed/headed characters and especially tsunderes in contrast to softer "tareme" eyes (example of both: The Hiiragi sisters from Lucky Star). Villainously narrow eyes tend to be even narrower, more angular and/or emphasized by unusually small pupils within contrastingly colored irises (e.g. blue or yellow, thus making the irises stand out).
Vash the stampede, Spike Speigel, the old guy from inuyashiki, guy from Fate/Zero, basically the entire cast of GITS:SAC, the doctor in Naoki Urasawa's Monster, Rimuru Tempest, I'm sure there's other older anime protagonists that I could come up with if I gave it some thought
might not be the protagonist but surely an important character in Cuticle Detective Inaba, my boi Kuniharu Ogino is 30 years old with a wife and daughter which not only he is overpowered but his daughter is too. (so is the mother if you count her stupidity matching her durability a power)
there is actually a lot of dad protaginist anime in the slice of life genre but its main focus is either work-related, school-related or some way related to taking care of their own child or other children for example "If It's for My Daughter, I'd Even Defeat a Demon Lord"
on note of older characters in anime, claymore seems to be older characters. while their ages are never said it can be fairly well assumed none of the women there are teenagers, same with devil may cry. no teen or young characters are the mains. or hellsing is another (though i don't recall is seras was supposed to bea teen but i think she was in her 20's?) there's also black lagoon to name another. so there's a few anime where the mains aren't kids, but they're not common.

This was funny and thanks for posting it on TH-cam
Looks like I’ll skip my anime for noble
Death Wizard ur pfp gives me life-
54:10 i'll bookmark this for future research, don't mind me.
Girls Bravo! That was it!

Can we get Rika a medal? He watched OreImo with his sister... lol
Also to add: you should make your podcasts available on other platforms, for downloading.
A little late, but here goes:
There was this old web page that listed "The Laws of Anime".
About adults in anime, it's not like there aren't any:
Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku
My Roomate is a Cat
Koboyashi's Dragon Maid
Finding shounen anime with an adult cast, now that's where you are out of luck.
I really like this productive discussion. I think that I, as an (really awful) fan fiction creator, can learn a lot here
For eyes sure they convey emotion but the true reason is that Osamu Tezuka drew his characters with big eyes and since he’s the god of manga and anime it became a stable of the medium.
Accelerator looks pretty Much Generic if you go by his Hair style
As for the Kids being the heroes
Hyperdimension Neptunia the animation has Teenaged looking protagonists who work and they transform into More Adult looking
I better see this on SoundCloud, Spotify, and ITunes. If it gets bigger

Yeah, in reality nosebleeds suck.
Although I would laugh my ass off if I ever actually got one from lewd stuff!
Why did Lost Pause not reference Gintoki from Gintama when he mentioned there not being enough adult shonen protagonist?
Cuz I think most people will thought him as college grad age or somethin?
ONe Anime that is about an adult who has a regular salary job.
Legend of Black Heaven
Some anime with functional families? here's some:
Shugo chara
madoka magica
all I can think of
that's it
really, it's quite sad
Kenichi: history's mightiest disciple has one.
Depends what you define as "functional"...
Kiss x Sis has a pretty functional family...
When you’re citing Madoka Magica as a source for anything related to happiness, you know you’re digging deep
4:53 - lol he actually edited the clip to be longer.
Hey, Noble. Have you ever watched an anime called: "Haven't you heard? I'm Sakamoto."
Promethean Rebel I love that anime 0w0
It's all the cool things everybody accidentally does all put together in one person.
I like Rika already
Isn't the demon lord, retry mc an old guy? Like in his 30s? Or it's his character after getting isekai'd?
might not be the protagonist but surely an important character in Cuticle Detective Inaba, my boi Kuniharu Ogino is 30 years old with a wife and daughter which not only he is overpowered but his daughter is too.
20:00 To Be Hero, is a shounen anime that focus on a Dad.
