I LOVED LISTENING TO St.Johns pSsion on my cell phone.I never heard it by Apollo's Fire.I am a senior and quarantined in my assisted living apt. Ann it gets boring.so thanks.
Very good idea to mix female and male voices in the choir instead of separating them strictly SATB. r Janet sorrell, everything you take in hand serms to becone a success!
Thank you very much to Apollo’s Fire for posting this, which brings back fond memories of hearing them perform it in NYC about a week later. It’s a really interesting and insightful realisation and I particularly rate Nicholas Phan’s Evangelist and Amanda Forsythe’s two appropriately contrasting, but equally sublime arias. I can’t help wondering, however, what happened to “Von den Stricken meiner Sünden” and “Betrachte, meine Seel” later on in Scene 3? There are a few versions of this work, but this seems like the standard 1724/49 compromise and those two numbers are common to all versions.
Indeed, this is most puzzling. These two numbers are not long, and one could argue that "Betrachte" is one of Bach's most affecting ariosos. Similarly, most of #30 is missing from the video, as are $36, 37 and 38. The energy and sense of drama of this production place it above most others--and the solo work is excellent--but these cuts are as disappointing as they appear unnecessary. Because of these choices, unfortunately, this production cannot be recommended. Deeply disappointing.
