  • There are over 450 functions in Excel. When it comes to dates, there are five functions you must know. EOMONTH, DATE, YEAR, MONTH, and DAY are among them.
In this video, I analyze getting paid twice a month or semi-monthly. To calculate the last day of the monthly, I use the EOMPNTH function. It is nested inside the DATE function. Here is a breakdown of the functions:
YEAR function - gives you a year. If an invoice date is 7/14/2021, the year function will pull out the year and return 2021.
MONTH function - gives you a month. If an invoice date is 7/14/2021, the month function will pull out the month and return 7.
DAY function - gives you a day. If an invoice date is 7/14/2021, the day function will pull out the day and return 14.
EOMONTH function - will find the end of the month from a date. If the date is 7/14/2020, the end of the month function will return 7/31/2020. If the date is 4/12/2021, the end of the month will return 4/30/2021. The EOMONTH function has two arguments.
DATE function - has three arguments. Year, Month, and day.

Hi Chris, thanks for the video. When I enter the formula as you show the date returned is not the end on the month. Instead I got 31-Mar-19, but it should have been 31-Mar-20. Please help?
    Thx.

Chris, interesting presentation, still as Brit, can get my head around USA date notation.... Useful function, but i noted that when you copied the formula, got the error flag, how do you stop these.....

Are you talking about the green triangles in the top left of the cells? If yes, that means my formula is inconsistent. Which it is since I'm using two functions in the same column.

Use the TEXT Function. =TEXT(A2,"MMM") for a three-letter month, and =TEXT(A2,"MMMM") for the month spelled out.
