I like to think that Maria seeing that picture made her think so much about it that she eventually saw that twin in the mirror, a complete opposite of herself that's better than her in every way. The person that she wants to be. She developed a personality disorder as a way to protect herself from her "circumstances", her twin taking the wheel instead of her.
