  • UK universities are facing an existential crisis as stagnant fees and inflation squeeze higher education institutions, and the sector has lost valuable international students. Yet government and business tout it as key to the British economy.
Bloomberg radio anchor Caroline Hepker has a special podcast out today, about whether the universities' funding model is broken.

Its a shame that education has become a business as well. Reduce the number of MPs and their perks, austerity should also apply to these politicks.

Lol. I agree. Those at the top never seem to suffer from their own policy prescriptions. It's like the ceo who fires thousands of people but the executives get bonuses because they reduced costs and increased profits.

£40,000 for AI scientist working on cutting edge tech while £500,000 for Uni professors & heads. That is the state of the UK.

Which university in the UK pays £500,000 for a University Professor or Head? Only VCs are paid the highest in the Universities and the majority of VCs would get less than half you mentioned. The majority of University Academics are paid based on a pay scale that is implemented throughout the country. After the degree, postgraduation and PhD, one has to do research using cutting-edge technology for 5-6 years post-PhD to become a university lecturer with a starting salary of £50,000 and a University Professor (usually it takes ~15 years for a lecturer to get promoted to Professor) starting salary is £70,000. Most of the time, the so-called cutting technology is developed by University Professors. For example, the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine was developed by academics at Oxford University.

Why would any international STEM students come to the UK to study, when the salary after graduation is lackluster against those of the US, Canada, Australia, or the EU.

Money laundering. Indian / Paki corrupt officials are allowed to bring their cash, no questions asked, to UK in the name of paying for their children's education. British are very good at money laundering (Panama papers? Bahamas? etc.).
But Britain is becoming a country of Curry Houses and Baltis. Even the PM is an Indian Hindooo... So no one wants to come to UK anymore. Russia and China, clean and civilized, will soon take over.

You mean that Electrical Engineers, Computer scientists , Biologists are doing a ‘hard, fact based science’ and they need to be paid higher than Waitrose employees? You trying to bankrupt great British companies m8?

These are highly educated individuals who have invested a lot in their skills and degrees. They deserve their pay. Do you want them to have a salary equal to that of a bartender? I find it amusing that in the UK, most people think professionals should be paid next to nothing and then they get mad at them for seeking employment abroad where they get paid their actual market value.

@elifuentes7070 Skilled labour isn't as respected in Europe because European values inherently include compromise and the need to live communally, such values are proving difficult to sustain in a globalised economy when British passport holders can migrate to another country much more easily and enjoy a better QOL.

There was a fundamental problem when the limit was pushed to its current level. It was intended that only a few universities would go to that level but actually all of them did it. Prices should go up but not all institutions. Many universities are top heavy in terms of administration and are inefficiently run.

Because the elites don’t want the poor to become educated and especially at the top schools. The good jobs that come with money, are for those that have or come from money and or have connections. The best way for a non elitist person to get an education and then a good job, is to somehow get into to a regular place of education and ace your way through it. When that’s achieved you then live in a different county where the class system is not as fortified as it is in the UK. I speak from experience.

As long as one third of the Students are from the UK, it is best to let the Elite Universities set their own Entrance qualifications as well as Study Fee’s .
This could be Fee’s going up to £20,000 per Year .
It could be that at least 10% of the places are funded by assisted Fee’s for the best and brightest Students .
We must stop this Class Garbage when deciding the entrance criteria that requires a “ high” Fee to study at an Elite University’s like : Oxford, Cambridge or Durham and LSE .

Putting up fees requires increasing government borrowing. Many students never repay in full so it is in effect a graduate tax. So the Tories have in effect raised income tax above a modest threshold by 9p on the pound on a huge and growing swath of the population while claiming to be a low tax party

they'd be forced to accept a lot of unintelligent, less deserving people at Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, LSE if they only accepted Brits. So to keep standards high, they have to accept smartest people from around the world especially Asia where there's a lot of high IQ communities in China, Hong Kong, Japan, India, etc. It's meant to maintain the high intellectual standards of the institution.
