Population Decline: Crisis or Opportunity?

  • The world’s population may have recently topped 8 billion for the first time, but where the worries were once about the world becoming too crowded, now the concern is about a drop in global fertility rates.
There are very real fears that a shrinking, ageing population could be catastrophic for the global economy and its healthcare systems. But some experts argue that there might in fact be an upside to population decline - especially when it comes to the earth’s natural resources.
In this episode of The Agenda, Juliet Mann speaks to Stephen J Shaw, data scientist, demographer and Director of the documentary "Birthgap - Childless World", Peter Elwin - Director of Fixed Income & Head of Food & Land Use Programme at Planet Tracker, Haleh Nazeri, Longevity Economy lead at the World Economic Forum and Dr Jennifer Sciubba - demographics expert and author of the book "8 billion and counting: How sex, death and migration shape our world”.

Gender equality? Well I am all for it and increasing paid parental leave, etc. But to claim low birth rates are due to a lack is a stretch... it wasn't too long ago that birth control wasn't even an option, or opting out of marriage. Celebrate the progress people ✨️ 💪 🎉

It’s very good that we are coming to an equilibrium. With our planet and its resources. All successful organic species have a constant population in a given context. Nothing bad with that.
An older human population will signify that we will have more knowledge, prudence and wisdom and less desire to conquest through wars.

Lord Have Mercy! Why won't anybody say what needs to be said. This problem is laid right at the feet of women and the feminist movement and as the third world becomes more liberated for there women this will be there future. Women can definitely get educated and get jobs just as men and that may make them free, that is debatable if someone is free because they have Job. The problem is men can not do women's part of our society they can not have babies. If women don't go back to having babies our society and people will disappear. (But women will have had a good Job) What a victory.👍

Good point. But realize this: there WILL NOT be a global Handmaid's Tale implemented successfully. The Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu tried to implement this by banning birth control and this failed HORRIFICALLY. There were abandoned children in orphanages that died from neglect. So it's not about thinking of FORCING women to have children only, those children MUST be WANTED and RAISED properly for humanity to have a future. Understand that women will NOT go back to being relegated simply to the domestic sphere and bearing the total burden of raising children again. That era is over.

Woman marry across and up hierarchies and men across and down on average.
Woman become more awesome, and educated which result in less viable male partners.
Most women who do not have children do so mostly bc they prioritize their careers or never found a quality partner. I think less than 20% of childless woman are childless bc of not wanting children.
