  • Simon Amstell, the award-winning comedian, TV presenter, author, actor, screen writer and feature film director joins us to discuss his journey from Popworld host and award winning stand-up to the making of his latest film Benjamin, a comedy about a rising star filmmaker, who is on the brink of premiering his difficult second film.
Known for his left-field, ironic and surreal brand of comedy, Amstell began performing on the comedy circuit during his early teens and later became the youngest finalist to appear in the BBC New Comedy Awards. He won many comedy awards during his time presenting Never Mind the Buzzcocks, including Best Entertainment Performance and Best Comedy Entertainment Personality.
His critically acclaimed sitcom Grandma's House, a fictionalised version of his own life and Jewish family background, which he co-wrote with Dan Swimer, ran for 12 episodes, with the first series broadcast in 2010 and the second in 2012.
Amstell's feature film debut, vegan mockumentary Carnage was broadcast on BBC iPlayer in 2017. Set in 2067 where the UK is vegan and focuses on the older generations' guilt of their previous carnivorous eating habits, Carnage stars many UK film favourites including Martin Freeman, Alex Lawther and Eileen Atkins.
Simon published his first book Help in 2017, which includes a collection of annotated stand-up scripts and comedic and tragic stories from his life as a budding stand- up comic to feature film writer and director.

Simon is such a lovely and creative human being and as a young queer person I find his work (stand up, book, movies) so much more relatable than other more popular stuff, I just wish it was possible to watch Benjamin here in Moscow or somewhere online like on BBC or Netflix

I've been on a simon amsell binge and finally an interviewer who knows how to be natural with him. He doesn't go into the defence mode

If you're going to have non-optional subtitles on a video, please make sure they're not riddled with spelling and grammatical errors. I've only watched the first two minutes of this and the subtitles are a joke. I expect better from the BFI.

Has Simon had a lobotomy in the last few a years? He used to be a witty, funny guy. Now he's just a pompous, middle-aged bore.
