Good video. An added point to the one you made about alignment that some folks might not know is the gimbal bearing itself pivots slightly. So often what I do is insert the alignment tool then pop it with my hand a few different directions so to break it free. Ive found it’s pretty rare that the engine itself is out of alignment, it’s almost always that the inner race of the new bearing is just stiff…especially if it’s still frozen from being in the freezer. Unless it slips right in like yours does in which case I crack a beer and thank the boating gods.
@@TeamMarineService question; what is the best quality grease-able gimbal bearing that i can purchase? the one i bought in a kit does not allow the grease to flow through the whole bearing as i would like it to, just the outer aluminum housing...
Are sealed bearings and u joints superior or stronger and better than greasable types? How often should bellows and bearings be replaced? Thank you. Great video.
BUY THE ALIGNMENT TOOL or rent one. I replaced one on a 1992 Chaparral 2200 and it was a pain trying to get it aligned by myself. Also replaced bellows kit and joints too since it was already apart. Lesson learned as that was my first inboard boat. Bellows kit as destroyed and leaking, seller lied and I didn't know to check, luckily our maiden voyage didn't end up as a recovery mission. Don't store boat with the outdrive all the way up also, it stretches the boot prematurely. Learned a lot with that boat, that's for sure.
Good video thanks, really glad to see your work bench looks like mine, lol. I start feeling bad when i see all these Tubers with scientifically clean mechanic shops! What tha? Who has time to clean up, bring on the next project! 😎
Hi it looks good work what do I do when I can't get the drive to release, it's completely stuck volvo penta SX outdrive have removed the 6 bolts and the gear cable. have tried everything
Great DIY video. What kind of grease are you using for the gimbal bearing? Also, my zerk came off with he gun. It won't scrwe back. Are there sizes to kerks?
My volva-penta outdirve is a 99', I cannot find anything wrong with the Gimbal bearing, it looks great. I do believe there was a tiny amount of water in the bellows, I plan to replace the bellows, would you replace the gimbal too just because of the age?
I'm actually wondering if you have a video of you reinstalling the leg, I just replaced the lower unit on our leg with the same omc Cobra leg as you have in this video and I'll tell you what it was not fun trying to get it on the back of the boat.
@@TeamMarineService what do you use for the bellows adhesive???? I know some people use the mercruiser bellows adhesive but work shop Manuel says use omc gasket sealer
Great vid! Im about to replace bearing on my "pre" Alpha unit. Does it matter which way the new bearing faces? There is a side with 2 slots and the opposing side is smooth. Just wondering if it mattered. Thanks
I just finish mine but I'm not entirely sure I have the gimbal bearing all the way in. is there a specification or measurement anywhere on the internet?
a trick i have learned on some sternlegs is you can fill the drive bellows with oil (pump in with oil can) and if it gets a hole you see the oil on the water so you can pull it apart before it becomes a major.
Brother. You remind me of my older brother I never had! I work exactly the same. Appreciated my friend.!

Yep exactly what I do. Tap the alignment tool North, South, East, West then remove tool and insert drive. Usually goes straight in then. 👍🏻
Best video on bearing yet
dude, great video! straight forward, no fluff and great video and audio work!!
Thanks Chris

Very good info/how-to video for the many do-it yourselfers! Best tool in the tool box so many times is that Whiteout!! Thanks!!
👍🏻👍🏻
Found somebody that does not yammer for 20 minutes about bullshit.
You did the best video for this and I watch a lot of them.
Thanks Patrick!
Solid video man! I thank you. I think there’s a couple points missing but straightforward no bullshit I love it. thank you for your time!!

Hi
it looks good work
what do I do when I can't get the drive to release, it's completely stuck
volvo penta SX outdrive
have removed the 6 bolts and the gear cable.
have tried everything
Looks like you've done that before. Nice work. I'm working on and old Wellcraft with an alpha1 gen 1 and your video helped.
👍🏻👍🏻
I'd do the seal between the gimbal and engine while I'm at it. What about sealant glue on the non-clamp side of the U-joint bellows? Good video.
best one yet!!! Thanks

It does suck!
Is the gimbal bearing supposed to go right up against the inner bearing?
Great video
Is the a video where you install the bellows ???
Thanks Paul, We do not have a video on that yet!

Just wondering if it mattered.
Thanks
Smooth side with the dot facing out

Thank you!
Store with trim down directing water away from the bearing. Better yet, boat front up...
So it would be a very bad idea to change this bearing with the engine removed?
How do you feel about the sealed bearings with no grease fitting?
Personally we do not like them but sometimes you have to use them when the application calls for them.
Where did you get the gambal bearing puller?
Interwebz!
I just finish mine but I'm not entirely sure I have the gimbal bearing all the way in. is there a specification or measurement anywhere on the internet?
So you can replace both bellows without removing the gimbal housing ???
Yes you can
@@TeamMarineService i just found that out lol its still a bitch have to yank that sucker thru dont know about installing a new one though
@@jcowboy123 did you end up doing it without pulling the housing off?
Is that boat a silverline

Interesting!
How much money can cost that work?
Your comment made my hurt head
Where is the grease seal located?
In the bearing!
@@TeamMarineService there's a seal behind the bearing as well. I notice it wasn't replaced and was wondering why. Great video, thanks!
Outdrives look like they are more trouble than their worth. I'll stick to my Mercury 150 outboard.....karma is about to bite me.
