Old Kenmore 80 series washer and a 68 yr young woman.
My washer would fill with water then stop! Thanks sooo much for this video, such an easy fix!
Love the repair rather than sending my machine to the dump and having to buy a new machine!
    Thanks again!

OMG, that was the exact problem. My wires did not have enough slack to fix the switch in place, but pulling the whole casing off the washer was a cinch! That gave me access to the wires clipped in place inside the casing. The washer works fine. Now I can cancel that repair call, and I will order a new switch just to have a backup. Thanks a million--Ed

Just zip tied the lid switch on my 90 series Kenmore washer following your instructions. It works! Figured it might since the flapper part was loose. Gotta keep these old Kenmore legends going. Glad I stumbled upon your video while trying to find the part number. Thank you so much.

THIS WORKS! Thanks to you mainly and others videos related to different switch types I fixed it quickly at least so it will drain and finish a cycle so I can work on it easier; I found the switch as you showed then I jammed a popsicle stick to push the switch together tighter, as I did I heard a soft click click when I operated the switch so I know the stick is in the right place, there is a shelf where the switch is to allow the stick to say put; so the W/D now operates until I can take the switch out and zip tie it later, a side benefit right now the switch is always on so the washer works even with the lid open. THANK YOU.

OMG! You are my new hero!
I just replaced the drain pump, thinking that was the problem. Did what you said and the damn washing machine finally drained! Omg I just spent a week doing laundry by hand, and I have 2 puppies who don't know how to use the grass pads, one of which now has the runs! I'm literally about to cry I'm so frustrated. I was ready to order a new control board, new lid assembly, ect. And that's all it took 😪
Now the true test will be to see if it can do an actually load, rinse and spin and there not be water at the bottom of the drum....

Other videos have you remove the entire cover. The repairman wanted $100. So before heading another direction I tried this repair plan and it worked. I had the zip ties so it was free and took maybe 5 minutes.
A BIG thank you for this video.

Fantastic tip! I'm pretty handy, but had not heard of this until I saw your video. Was ready to cut the wires and bypass the switch... This is a better fix and super easy! My lid switch (Kenmore 80 series) had a metal bracket attached which prevented the zip tie from wrapping front to rear. I went around the switch sideways and it worked just as well. Clothes are washing now and all is good... Thanks!

Thank you so much for this ingenious fix! It worked! And thank you also for posting this on TH-cam. I have been without a washer for months! It is a super old washer so I figured I had to replace it. It is part of a stacked laundry tower so this means replacing the whole thing. Big dollars! Calling in a repair technician means $200 before they even diagnose the problem, never mind fixing it. So I figured I would save that money for the new machine instead. However, after months of hand washing and coin laundry I worked up the courage to try to fix it myself. Once I figured out what the likely problem was I looked up videos for fixing it. But I really didn't want to try to source a new replacement lid switch and take the machine apart to install it. I had just about given up when the clouds parted and the angels sang and I found your video! When the machine started working I was ecstatic! I never knew I could experience so much joy while doing the laundry! I am a 58 year old woman living on my own and when I told my sisters I fixed the washer they couldn't believe it! Thank you, thank you, once again!

Wow!! Fixed me. Suddenly wife yells from laundry room and 15 yr old Kenmore Series 90 washer agitates but stops and does not spin and drain. The switch looked exact except for a metal splash guard mount off switch. There is a slot in metal so I could still thread zip tie. Worked like a charm. The switch house was sprung slightly like a clam shell just starting to open. Now the switch paddle is tight against underside of metal opening.

  • @JohnJones-oy3md
    @JohnJones-oy3md 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

This worked perfectly for me today. The lid switch on my Series 80 washer failed in exactly the same way. I squeezed the two halves together and wrapped them with several layers of 3mm kapton tape, pulling it tightly and running it 90-degrees to the direction he tied the zip tie. I'd imagine electrical tape would do the trick as well. Just be sure to pull it tight and wrap enough layers around it so that it doesn't creep apart again. A bit of a hack, but sure beats taking the entire case apart or bypassing the switch. Thank you Scottthefixitguy!

I picked up this unit a few years ago in the garbage. It looked new. I tested it by using a pry to keep the safety switch off. Worked like a charm then. Now my primary machine is out and I found this video. First... When I took the switch out? Someone had already done something similar. There were like five rotted rubber bands around the switch. I got rid of them, put it back together with one zip tie and it's working like a charm. Garbage picked a washer and fixed it with a zip tie that's been in my tool box for 15 years.

What a great solution! I first glossed over the lid switch as the cause of my washer not spinning. After taking it apart, and finding no problem with any of the internal components, I determined that it was just a lid switch issue. Can't believe that I didn't check this first! duh. Anyway, I tried this zip tie fix, and it worked perfectly! Thanks so much for this very helpful and easy-to-follow video.

Holy cow, this fixed it - my case had split and paddle wheel came out, - snapped it back together and zip-tied it like you showed. Voila! Machine works like a good clock now. Thank you!

thanks so much for this repair idea---just did it, it saved my bacon and my washer's bacon! I didn't know there was a wrap-wire around the switch-box workaround! I love my Kenmore top-loader [except for this safety switch issue... which has happened before] and will not part with it! I didn't have the time/energy to do the by-pass wire one that I have also seen or to try to put a whole new switch in--so this was super helpful! :)

I wonder if this would work for the Kenmore 600 series. Shows the F5 code.

Excellent video. My switch was slightly different with a metal guard on it so I had to wrap the tie across the width instead of the length, but it worked and we're back in business in < 5 minutes. Thank you!

You're the man. Thank you so much!
FYI for the 80 series. The wire is clipped to the inside wall, so you have to pop it off to get enough slack to see switch.

Hello, thanks for the tip. I have the 80 series. How do you pop it off the wall? Plus, how do I know for certain that it is the lid switch that is faulty?

awesome video! This totally works perfectly. I also put some construction adhesive around the edge of the split to make it extra tight. This switch failed once before and I called a repair man that cost me probably about $100... but this time because of the video it was a quick fix.
I wonder how much $ in repair calls this one fault has generated. The design of this switch really should have screws to keep the 2 halves together IMHO.

YOU RULE ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I started a very large load, it filled up and then "kerplunk". As always I checked TH-cam but couldn't find my washer. I thought either the motor is out or worse. I don't exactly know what worse is....but it sho' don't sound too good. In one video the "lid switch" was mentioned. I had already checked it, duh!...but I went back and kinda fiddled under there and the gray plastic piece wouldn't stay up. Needless to say, I found your video. I did forget to unplug it, so when I pushed the housing together, the machine started. One neon green zip tie and all is well again. THANK YOU!!!!!

Thank you! In my case, the switch had come loose on the sides. I wrapped a thick rubber bad around the switch from side to side instead of back to front, and I was back in business.
