As well as that uncleanliness being a distinct symbol of poverty, showing the negligence of the whole system they are in. Also needless to say the many parallels to with Eren.

Most people were living near rivers, torrent, lakes for irrigation purpose so clean water wasn't that difficult to access. It's when the rising bourgeoisie started to buy every feudal rights on land combined with the birth of the market economy that many peasants were forced to leave their land and start concentrating in new big cities to work in pre-manufactures (in England many were even mutilated or simply killed for resisting that change)...cities where the acces to clean water became a real problem...That's the period on which you can read reasonable stories about poor people being dirty, big epidemics etc...

There is a certain character in One Piece that is voiced by Levi's VA...and he's just as fucking cool as Levi. The same edgy personality. This VA really makes Levi pop so hard in AoT, just so cool and aggro all the time, totally catches his demeanor perfectly when he's insanely serious and random little subtle humor moments with his quirkiness. Yes! I've been so excited for this reaction! It's all the best bits of AoT with the best character as the focus. It's both beautiful and brutal. I think Eren reminds Levi of Isabel at times, they have similar eyes and share the wish for freedom. Eren is a darker, slightly unhinged version though due to his childhood trauma that gave rise to an all-encompassing hatred of titans.
Most Anime's: Have a lot of filler episodes, even half of the cannon episodes adds too little to the story or boring. Then there's AoT where even OVA's are must watch!
I've watched this OVA so many times, and I still can't help tearing up the moment I hear Levi's rage and dispair when killing the aberrant. It just breaks my heart 💔

You might not recognize the character you said “I don’t know if I trust this commander” about but that was Keith Shadis. He was the commander that trained the soldiers before they chose a branch. He had gone bald by then, but he was yelling a lot in episode 3 when everyone was lined up.
He said the same thing to Eren when he wanted to transform against the female titan, trust your comrades or trust yourself, just make sure to not regret your choice.
What Erwin said to Levi in the end about not regretting no matter what decision you take, if not, it will dull your next one and in the end become a slave to the person taking the decision for you ... and proves it literally after by him looking emotionless at the dead body of his comrade

AOT ovas are always great. They either develop characters (in Lost girls Mikasa and Annie, the other first season ovas developed Jean and the main crew's relationship) or they give us clues to push the narrative forward (Lost girls and Ilse's Notebook).
