  • Today we finished up the last bay. We first plumbed and straightened the endwall and then we could go up and start dropping in purlins. Through some kind of luck, the purlin length was what it should be and this last bay of purlins went smoothly. We could then start to work on the sidewall: straightening and plumbing each post. While we're at the top of each post, it can also be trimmed to length and the tail can be added

Well Matt, Donovan, you and Jack may not be as fast as the Amish at raising a barn but you're certainly way more entertaining that's for sure.
I'm glad to see you've finally lock in the structure all nice and square with only a few more things to do till we get to see the adventure of you guys putting on the metal sheets.
Hopefully the winds will be gentle and they're easy peasy to put up.

I know you all know what you are doing, but as a suggestion I would have taken a roll of aluminum 12" wide and wrapped the base of each post. This keeps the mice and rats from eating them. I’m watching your progress and learning the design choices you made for a stronger building. At the same time, my neighbor is replacing his barn lost to a fire. Totally different techniques. No purlins, no piers, just posts cemented into to an augered hole and strapping across the top of the trusses. They did choose to hang trusses every 4’. Net result seems the same. I sighted down the walls and they look straight. Proof will be in how they age.

“Door Hole, Barn Thing” and a bunch of others from the “home remodel thingy”. Your developing a new construction dictionary and could actually write a small booklet with the new words and their definitions. That aside, it’s good to see the barn getting closer to getting its skin applied. If you have any footage, how about detailing how the wall straightening was done, which would be interesting for many viewers who haven’t done that before. Many individuals may not understand why you put the 2x6 block on then placed the string on top instead of just running the line straight down the wall. I know why it’s done, but I don’t recall hearing that explanation mentioned during the barn-thing-build videos.

Did you factor the thickness of the metal of the hangers in your purlin cutting? I think it's 14(?) saddle hangers total for each row of purlins PLUS the thickness of the truss fastenings in some rows - you're looking at almost two inches added over the whole building.
