Along with the lyrics that so perfectly express despair over a love never realized, what makes this song great is how dispirited Thom is for the verses, then kicks into intensity for the chorus, especially that incredible second chorus, when he is literally wailing his despair. The juxtaposition of the downbeat and the anguish is what makes this song so wonderful and relatable, regardless of how he now doesn't like his own song.

He has an eye lid disorder which is triggered by jaw movement, that's why he sings with his eyes closed mostly and noted for not moving his mouth much. The song is about this and his insecurity..... perfect body/soul, i'm a creep
Street Spirit (Fade Out) is just gut-wrenching, reminds me of like funeral wailing at the end. And Thom has said in interviews what the song means and where it came from, and how it kills him to sing it. How he feels bad for the audience when they sing along, all happy and such. He compares it to taking a sick dog to the vet to be put down, but it's happy and wagging his tail the entire trip there. Best version I've found.... th-cam.com/video/qvjvNncbKzw/w-d-xo.html
The mouth stretch is because of ear problems. As someone who's had ear issues (impacted wax, infections etc) this is a behaviour that can happen as a result. Our jaw bones connect to out skulls right under the ear. Our biology has evolved in a way that our ears help get cleared by chewing food. It's similar to how regular walking help digestion, particularly bowel movements. Thom exhibited this behaviour around 1996 to 1998.
He's stretching the muscles he's going to need later in the song for the 30 sec full gaping belt at about 5:50 to 6:20. It looks quite cold and he would have tore his jaw muscles without warming for that. He also wipes a bit of drool away afterwards... :-)
Considering The Critical Debut Of This Song, It Has Defied, Surpassed, & Shattered Expectations For 28 Years. And That’s With A 7 Year Hiatus From Singing The Song Live. Incredible.
I hadn't before seen this particular performance of this song, but you can tell that he's really feeling each note of the song, and it's amazing to watch someone else feel each note so strongly. I adore music for its ability to communicate and conjure emotion, so it's very rewarding to see someone else who isn't afraid to let their own emotions show in real time as they experience them from amazing music.
This live performance is really special.... "I wish I was special .... You're so f****n' special", definitely, yes, you are! It's perfection. First time I listen to this performance from them. Nice post, Rebecca! Best Regards from your friend François in Montreal, Canada! 🎼🃏🎶🎵🙏👍👍👍👌👌👌👏👏👏💛😁👋
He found a form of words that precisely captures the sense of isolation and exclusion, and had the emotion to make it believable. Many people have felt that way, but been unable to gain release by expressing the emotion other than through the song... hence it's enduring popularity. I think Damien Rice's "O" was massive for the same reason.
@@danpreston564 i can't speak to their intent with the sound, but lyrically it is absolutely a sarcastic, thinly veiled message saying they were sick of it. When you loose someone that you loved so deeply !! like your wife and you have to perform a week later in from of a huge crowd that you have to take substances just to keep it together , you’re going to sing from the core of your heart whit imperfections , and transmit all of that pain ! Tom Yorke : the man who put his soul in his voice
Phil Renard - Thom, :) & yes. :-)
For me it was Joe Cocker. You are so beautiful is amazing. To each his own though.
Also Roger Waters, you can here the emotion in his voice on The Wall.

Love that one!
What an end to what an album!
There is an excellent acoustic set version on TH-cam. Probably my favourite version.

@@seanmurphy637 This is the awesome acoustic version.
Ty for that. Took me miles away from where I am physically.
So much passion from Rebecca, I love it
The mouth stretch is because of ear problems.
OMG THANK UUU that makes a lot of sense!! idk where ppl got the idea he was snorting coke LOL
5:52 that's THE moment ;)
He's stretching the muscles he's going to need later in the song for the 30 sec full gaping belt at about 5:50 to 6:20. It looks quite cold and he would have tore his jaw muscles without warming for that. He also wipes a bit of drool away afterwards... :-)
I think he wipes a tear, and the stretch is probably coke
Would love a Matt Bellamy react! He has stated how much inspiration Thom had on his vocal style
Thom can sound all over the place and absolutely gorgeous at the same time. One of my favorite male vocalists, ever.
Considering The Critical Debut Of This Song, It Has Defied, Surpassed, & Shattered Expectations For 28 Years. And That’s With A 7 Year Hiatus From Singing The Song Live. Incredible.
This song speaks to most of us at some point.
Yeah, my broken heart. Someone I can’t have anymore, some I love but that person doesn’t feel the same anymore cuz it’s my fault

''what is that?''

That's what I was thinking
It’s coke for sure.
its after car accident 1982
HeLLb0T lmao yessss
His jaw kinda locks and he does that to prevent it
I hadn't before seen this particular performance of this song, but you can tell that he's really feeling each note of the song, and it's amazing to watch someone else feel each note so strongly. I adore music for its ability to communicate and conjure emotion, so it's very rewarding to see someone else who isn't afraid to let their own emotions show in real time as they experience them from amazing music.
I commented on a video back in November asking you to react to this I’ve waited so long and I’m so pleased
what i think most interesting is that even though I'm not a singer, I always stop to watch your videos and listen to what you have to say lol
This live performance is really special.... "I wish I was special
.... You're so f****n' special", definitely, yes, you are! It's perfection. First time I listen to this performance from them. What a great way to discover it with your amazing analysis! It shows all the energy that can be transmitted to the crowd without having to move! Singing is so powerful when done the proper way! Nice post, Rebecca! Best Regards from your friend François in Montreal, Canada! 🎼🃏🎶🎵🙏👍👍👍👌👌👌👏👏👏💛😁👋
Thom Yorke and Beck are the two most underrated geniuses in my life time
Hell yeah! Beck is crazy talented
Who underrates thom yorke
@@dudelebowski9746 hold on, let me find my abacus...
You are a nutter. Your passion acting out the emotion made me cry more than the song wtf
Fact no one asked for: My Iron Lung is a sarcastic response to Creep's popularity.
Sarcastic response or just an attempt to recreate the sound, and therefore the success of Creep in the US market?
@@danpreston564 i can't speak to their intent with the sound, but lyrically it is absolutely a sarcastic, thinly veiled message saying they were sick of it. Wouldn't surprise me if the tone was similar so the same people that loved creep would also like it while having no idea Thom was basically making fun of them. Seems like something they would do.
Dan Preston the lyrics are clearly sarcastic
And a great song as well.
You reacted to one of my favorite clips on youtube! Love it!
Ps: if you really want the feelings from Yorke, than watch Idioteque live performances.

All that was in my head was "I didn't raise you in a barn, Thomas Edward Yorke."
When you loose someone that you loved so deeply !! like your wife and you have to perform a week later in from of a huge crowd that you have to take substances just to keep it together , you’re going to sing from the core of your heart whit imperfections , and transmit all of that pain ! Yeah he did that my outmost respect to him!
i already said it. how dare you NOT going down the crying road! Dont stop yourselfe from enjoying this!
"This bit is the best bit." That's the bit that gave me a headache for the rest of the evening, when friends had me singing this song at karaoke.
i am the only one who drops some tears with this sound?
"does anyone hate it?..." Thom yorke lol
Psilo Cybin And Jonny Greenwood too!
The girl he had the encounter with and wrote the song about actually came to one of their concerts. Tom noticed her in the crowd and had a difficult time with it. Imagine going to show and the song the band is singing is about you lol
to the people dealing with drug addiction, there’s help. It is never to late to fight it! Never! Every breath you take is a chance. I promise you you’ll found your own way out. I promise there’s support for you. Online there’s groups and hotlines etc. I haven’t been through drug addiction, but family and dearest friends have, and it’s hell. I don’t know what it is like but I understand it’s hell.
Don’t listen to people making fun of you for it. They’re ignorant. You deserve to be healthy. there’s people like me out there who no matter what, we won’t give up on you and are cheering for your health and happiness. True happiness.
Sending positive hugs or cheers or whatever you need your way.
This specific version of this song is a 10/10.
The constant moving of his mouth is called tardive dyskinesia. Caused by long time on Anti-depressants and anticycotics.
Are we really not going to talk about when Tom kind of broke and cried at the end?? He brought that from somewhere very deep, personal and painful. And as well know, magic comes from pain.
LOVE how you appreciate each artists vocal style, for what (and WHY) it is.
I was at that concert and he said himself his jaw was sore. You should have heard that note he carried live...mind blowing!!!
