Probably the most epic single piece of footage on motor sport. Ari Vatanen redefined the word "commitment" in rallying. When he first came to Australia to compete, he was introduced to Colin Bond, who at the time was one of our top rally drivers. He asked Colin how many times he had rolled a car, Bond proudly replied "never." "Hmm," said Ari, "then how do you know where the limit is?"
I have watched that Pikes Peak run MANY times, and it never gets old.Brutal engineering meets insane skill and commitment, with NO room for error.Cheers Ian, from Tasmania
That's pure XU engine sound right there. French tecnhical finesse. The color scheme on this car is from the typical Peugeot Talbot sport scheme at the time.
It was going to be a rally car under the Group S formula, but because of Group B getting the axe from all those crashes during that time period, Group S was scrapped. The original Group S car is currently on exhibit at a museum somewhere I dunno which one.
@@alexk8792 The Group S car is at the "Musée de l'aventure Peugeot" (Peugeot museum) at Sochaux. I saw it last week alongside all the other monsters Peugeot made (405 Dakar and Pikes Peak version; 205T16; 905; 908; 208T16,306 maxi...). A really cool museum for motorsport fans ;)
Great comment! Relaxed Driving, not a Care in the World ! Group B, featuring the most amazing vehicles, came to an end after 3 major accidents. Ari is one of the most flamboyant and brilliant drivers you will ever watch. Back when he drove the 2 wheel drive bda Ford Escorts he was sensational to watch. He used to beat those cars to death. Nothing like the sound of a bda screaming with the twin side draft carbs trying to suck the inner guard in. Great memories, thanks Steve.
I saw Vatanen in an Escort in the 1977 Rally of New Zealand. We went to spectate in Maramarua Forest, we sat opposite a turnoff into a side road from a hundred-yard straight. Well Vatanen came round the bend into the straight flat out and never lifted off, just put the car broadside half-way down the straight and swept through the right-angle corner sideways... everyone else after that was an anticlimax. And yes I've had Escorts sideways many times - there's a 'little bit sideways' and then there's Vatanen. (And the sound of a (non-turbocharged) Escort echoing through the trees was always magical).
I get goosebumps every time I see this clip ever since I was a kid and saw it on Wide World of Sports years ago. I remember the hosts of the show having to replay it about three times in a row because they were in such awe and shock at how awesome it was. None of them could lift their jaws off the floor for the rest of the show. What a legend Ari is.
The production quality is insane for 1988, I think Peugeot had 2 helicopters to film this adding to all of the different camera angles on the car etc… These days you would just slap gopros everywhere and a few drones here and there

Well done on using the original footage not the revamped one that used a different soundtrack and really changed the whole experience. This is still my all time race driving video, thanks for addressing it.
Ari Vatanen mentions on his website that he had to slip the clutch in order to control the tire slippage and power delivery to the ground, when you have over 900 hp (at the start) trying to go to the ground. The car would lose power and only made a bit over 700hp at the peak. His record up the mountain stood for ~10 years. When it was finally broken it was done in perfect conditions on dirt that had been treated to make it almost like pavement. This video was made the year after his record setting run which was done in conditions that included mud, snow and sleet as he went up the mountain. the engine was built to only last 15 minutes - enough for qualifying and one run up the mountain. You see Vatanen clip the mountain which messed up one wheel. He finished with three wheel drive. In the post race interview he laughed about it saying that the "lion" in him didn't want to lift even though he probably should have. The final scene in the movie is Robby Unser crossing the line. As I said, this movie is done the year after Vatanen set the record, Peugeot had returned to reset the record. There is no other video like it cause the road changed. Yes more people have gone faster but based on the day, the conditions and the road...no one ever went faster than Ari Vatanen.
There's a similar video of Sebastian Loeb doing the run in 2013 in a 208 T16 Pug. Over 2 minutes quicker, but w-a-y more boring. Muted engine, semi-auto gear box, sealed road. Pfft! Ari at full noise, h-pattern stick-shit, 100mph into a hair-pin bend with one hand shielding the sun so he can see his braking point before the 1000ft drop 😳: Sir, I'm holding your beer!
@@yardmeat7499 Yeah no one is taking anything away from Loeb, he is/was the best rally driver, no point arguing against all the wins (well I guess Ogier could top it), but the pure craziness of these 80s drivers is mesmerizing.
And its always nice to look at the World Rally Championship drivers list when you can see 7 drivers from our small country Finland in there, one being the guy in the video :)
There's a movie from New Zealand in 1981 called Smash Palace with a old Kingswood Cop Car chasing A Formula race car down the road and the guy loses him on the dirt 😅 the chase clip is under 3 minutes long but would go well in a compilation clip ..
I was lucky to see him rallying the 205 t16 in the Argentinian rally back in the day, unluckily he had his almost fatal accident here too. They were hero's everytime they came down here
when i was a teen, i i got an autograph from vatanen in Mali during the paris-dakar, the very same day when he got his race car stolen, he still took same to sign for a bunch of highscool students despite what happened to his race car. that was kind.
Dude, you're a Yank motorsport fan! How can you not have heard of or seen Pyke's Peak before? I am a 57 year old Aussie and I've known about this race since I was a teenager!
I drove that in a rental car when I was around 20 yes old. It was still unpaved and no guard rails then. 1st time I experienced altitude sickness at the top. There's actually a check point on the way down where a ranger touches the sides of your wheels for brake heat. Shame they paved it.
Finland have had SO many good drivers in rally. Just do a quick search and you will be blown away by what they did before anyone else, i e the "Scandinavian flick" 🙂
Seeing as you've been loving the rally lately, I was curious if you're familiar with Group B. It was banned due to being far too dangerous, and was later reformed into today's WRC. Group B cars had way more power than even the fastest of the modern WRC cars, and they were racing back in the 80's. My favourite Group B car is also one of my favourite sounding cars of all time; the Audi Quattro S1. Give it a listen if you want an eargasm.
Peter Brock would be the first legend that springs to mind. Possum Bourne was a excellent rally driver too but he was killed in a non race incident on a public road in the rain I believe. Colin McRae also died in a non race incident. He was killed in a helicopter crash on my birthday, but the King of the mountain Peter Brock’s death the year earlier and a few days before my birthday will forever be the saddest day in my Motorsport memory. 💔🇦🇺💔🏴💔🇳🇿

Fantastic video! You should definitely react to more hill climb stuff. Pikes Peak, Goodwood, the lot!
when i was a teen, i i got an autograph from vatanen in Mali during the paris-dakar, the very same day when he got his race car stolen, he still took same to sign for a bunch of highscool students despite what happened to his race car. that was kind.
i see Ari vatanen near my home almost every summer, they have summer cottage here where i live, at Hankasalmi, finland :)
If you can find any footage of the Pikes Peak Suzuki Swift (I think) run, it will blow your mind at how hard it goes...
th-cam.com/video/1HlMyvZFPoE/w-d-xo.html is a small preview :)
Landis you check out any of the summer Nats 34 footage from the weekend just passed? Huge part of Aussies car cultre
Good thing Titanium Balls don't rust.
Epic, thanks.
A salute and prayer for all those brave drivers , co pilot's and spectators lost along the way, a beautiful but deadly love❤🙏⚘️
Possibly the best petrolhead video ever made.
Man that guy’ got balls of steel.
Back in the '90s, this movie was the end credit of the videogame "V-Rally 2", that's how he became popular.
Ari Vatanen, one of the greats from back in the day.
Awesome - Believe it or not I have ridden my bike up most of it and then rode down again! After it was bitumised.
the definition of 'in the zone'
never gets old watching this, and i think there's a HD version now too!
Ian , Are you following the Summernats in Canberra they finished on sunday and there are videos out there for you to react to.
100%, I reckon Ian would enjoy!

Mate, really enjoyed that. Rally is the king of racing as much as I love aloud v8 full flog up the road.
Been loving these rally reacts , this video is a classic 🔥
406 T16 with XU9J4 engine! If I'm correct, the same unit was in Citroen BX GTI. It was a beast.
I know how much you love your muscle cars Ian, If you haven't already, check out Summernats.
The adrenaline rush would be through the roof. Top notch driving that's for sure
The yello bird on the Nurb is another great classical video from this period.
There will never be another Climb Dance but check out Ken Block's Climbkhana Pikes Peak.
All the sideways, but on asphalt.
No co-driver either, just a pure drive by feel. Incredible.
What a blast from the past AWESOME
Ari is a legend 🇫🇮
From Finland to Colorado with ❤️ from Ari
It is insane. Rallying has claimed some excellent drivers. Great to watch.
💔🇦🇺💔🏴💔🇳🇿
My a**hole just took 1000 photos of my undies watching this!!
No doubt, the best racing footage ever.
