McCann Dogs How would you apply this method without a crate? Our puppy is about 12 or so weeks old. Husky. He seems to do well during the day with very minimal accidents but at night he still seems to go in the house. I've tried cutting water off by a specific time, and even setting an alarm to let them out in the middle of the night. Even after he goes potty and we go back to bed, next time we wake up, he's gone on the floor.

    • @McCannDogs
      @McCannDogs  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

The challenge you will continue to have is that your Husky puppy won't understand that he needs to hold his bladder even when you're not supervising him directly! If he has a space that he can go to have an accident, and then go to a clean space and go back to sleep, there isn't any reason to hold it. If you don't have a crate for him, you could create a small area beside your bed that he can be in, where he is safe and has room to sleep. But he needs to understand that there isn't enough room to pee on the floor without creating a mess where he will be sleeping. Without using a safe place that limits his movement, he will eventually learn the potty training process. But it is likely going to take a lot longer. Because he's not getting clear and consistent information when you aren't able to supervise. Your little Husky puppy is always learning. Even when you aren't there to teach him;) It sounds like you're doing a great job of supervising him during the day. But he's starting to learn that when you're not there to guide him, he can make the decision for himself to pee on the floor and go back to bed. Hope this helps! Have fun with your Husky puppy (who I assume is an adorable little fluff ball as are all Husky puppies:) ~Ken

I know this is a video from a few years ago, so probably won't get a reply, but do you guys have a video on training to use the bell for those that want that option? There are other videos out there, but I love how you guys explain things and how you train. Our dogs have always just "told" us they need to go outside since I was little, but there are also a lot of times we've missed them trying to communicate that to us. Now that I'm older and have 3 young children, my life is louder and there is a lot of commotion, so sometimes I miss my dog letting me know she needs to potty. Which, she used to not have any accidents, but now she is 13 and elderly, so missing a cue sometimes results in an accident. I feel bad missing those cues and her having held it so long before I get her out or she resorts to using the rug. We are about to get some puppies this weekend (hence, me watching your videos which are AMAZING!) and it would be very helpful to have them ring the bell, so I hear that sound and don't miss anything.

The problem with this method, is my dogs quickly learn that it means they get to go outside. So, rather than needing to pee, they just ask to go outside all the time cause they like being outside.

Hi there, WarriorWolfeh! This is a common problem if you allow your dogs to play when you take them out to potty. Don’t let your pups train you!
When you take them outside to go, be sure to have them on leash so they can do their business, and if they choose to have a party, take them back in! We talk in a couple of our previous Potty Training videos about the fact that there are lots of distractions and fun things to do when they get outside. So you must limit their interaction if they are outside to go pee. Otherwise your smart pups will be the ones who are doing the training😉 ~Ken

@@McCannDogs I never thought of this. Generally when they go to the backyard its to go pee and play. We have a huge backyard we like to let our fogs play in. But if its just spotty break I'll use the leash and bring back in. Since we have 4 other yards connected to us and all have dogs that bark at us I need to be able to have potty time and play time for when the other dogs aren't out

Such good advice. I'm 48 hours into training and somehow I missed this video before now, and she has already taught me this, but I didn't know if it was ok to be picking her up and bringing her outside, I thought maybe I needed to force her to learn how to walk out.

  • @StudiosDelirium

I’ve been reading some comments and I think people should remember is that the younger the puppy the less time he can hold it. His bladder isn’t completely formed yet so the potty times need to be closer together. A puppy needs to go immediately out of the crate, after a nap, after play, after eating....and, in between. They usually start to be able to hold it for an hour or so after 3-3 1/2 months old, keeping in mind, after meals, after play, after naps also.

I used bells because my dog didn't indicate she had to go out and it was frustrating to have the accidents. The bells worked well for us as we could hear the bells ring when we were somewhere else in the house. (They were larger than your example and this was after she was grown and had earned some freedom in the home but wasn't completely free. She didn't come look for us or bark to let us know. I put bells at each door and she used them. She passed away a couple of years ago but we then got a rescue who was elderly, ill, and deaf and we couldn't tell if he had to go out. I taught him to ring the bells. Even though he couldn't hear them, we could hear, and he knew we'd come take him out.

We have a 11 week old Corgi. We have had him for 3 weeks. We are doing pretty well with house training but we still have not been able to figure out a signal for when he has to go. So he has about one or two very small pees during the day in the house. We often catch him in the act and take him right out side as you have showed. We have watched the video on getting him to tell us, but the problem in the morning is is that (and he will sleep from 10pm to 6:30 or 7 in the morning), when I take him down to the front door, put his leash on him and wait for him to tell me, he just lays down, finds something on the floor to play with or seems completely uninterested in going outside. For the small pees during the day, we watch and watch and try to figure out what he is telling us and sometime he will go to the door and we take him right out and he will pee. But other times he just pees without (seemingly) indicating anything. Any advice you can give will be appreciated. We love your videos.

We set up a place in the yard for the pee and poop business. Each day we take the dog there on a leash and wait until the pup does the business. We say quick for peeing (quick quick quick) and hurry up for pooping. This area has boundaries and we say go to the run or lets go to the run, when we take the pup there. It can take many months to truly get a puppy to use this area exclusively. However it is really worth it to not have to hunt for the poop all over the property. When the dog is older (my previous dog, now deceased) we would open the door and say go to the run. And we did not need to use a leash as we did the training during the puppy months. My new 12 week old puppy will pee easily but wants grass for pooping, (although she does poop in the run) so it will still take some time to make this a true habit and avoid grass. Our run has pea gravel in it . The older dog would not pee on the grass even on walks unless we gave permission- go quick. That was great and we could take the dog and say quick before entering a car and we’d get a quick response!. our new pup - i took her to the roadside, beside the curb, and said quick, and she responded by peeing. I don’t encourage grass for peeing. but this is truly a learning experience for a puppy.

Im here because Its not my first time having a puppy. I had a puppy at 13 years old but she died last year😞 and I dont remember anything about how I teach her things. She was a really smart dog. Actually I think I dont remember how I teach her to do things because probably I was too little and I didnt teach her,she was just smart and figured out how to make things properly. She used to tell me "I need to go potty" by scratching the doors.
Every dog is different and that is why Im learning things again,so I can give my best at training my new baby.
Your videos are super useful, and I can see how my little baby girl is learning things, slowly, but learning. She just learnt to go potty on paper when she is in the house (I cant take her outside because she is only two months and a week old and she still needs her vaccines), she responds to her name and sometimes to some commands, and she is learning how to he calm when Im serving her food in her bowl.
My mum gave me this puppy because I was in such a bad sadness and anxiety crisis, not sleeping well (I was in medication for this) because I still miss my dead dog so so much. I started therapy and the doctors tell me to have another pet.
Now I kind of sleep well (puppy sometimes wake me up 😂) but I sleep and even with less medication. I cant say Im happy, but I cant say Im sad or anxious either. We still need time to bond. Im feeling kind of overhelmed tho,too many emotions to handle, and a puppy is a big responsability. I think Im suffering some kind of "puppy blues".
But watching these videos make me feel more confident and less scared. I was scared because I was like "Im gonna be a good human momma for her? Im training her well? I think Im making lot of mistakes and she is not understanding me 😭"
I still think Im making lot of mistakes, or maybe she just doesn't understand because its too little, but Im trying my best 🥺

    • @McCannDogs

Hi there, Ricki! We have LOTS of videos here on the channel for adult dog training! But here's a CRUCIAL tip for you. Puppy skills are all foundational skills for any age dog. If your dog hasn't learned them yet, you need to start working on them. Imagine learning a new language. It doesn't matter how old you are when you start, you need to work on the fundamentals first. Same thing applies to an adult dog. And we work on this with a lot of our rescue/rehomed dogs. Response to name, sit/down, stay. All of these things make for great leadership/bonding exercises whether the dog is 12 weeks, 12 months, 12 years! Hope this helps.

After she was trained to use it, then at night, I would put her crate right up next to the dog door with something heavy behind it so she couldn't shuffle it away. Then all night long she had a complete access to the outside without playing in the house.

Working with a rescue who was for the first 2years of his life was outdoors in a kennel so I’m not sure what that situation was like other than just that. Then he went to a foster home for about 3 1/2 months and there, he had a doggie door and went in and out whenever he wanted. There, the foster family had acres and acres and not a whole lot of concern for intruders to get through the dog door....it just wasn’t much of a security risk. Here, it’s a smaller home and if we put a dog door in, anyone can crawl through it. My dog is an Irish Wolfhound. So he’s figured out that he goes to the front door to let me know he needs to potty. At night he comes to the side of my bed to tell me he needs to go potty. Unfortunately he doesn’t always go and it ends up being a fun little social visit for him if he’s wanting some attention. I grumble quietly when it’s 3 or 4am and keep with the program. Up until today, he’s only had one accident....and that was about learning where to go and how to go about getting there with new people and a new household. But today, he went to the front door, didn’t stay really for any obvious signs of....Yes, I have to go. He kind of hung around close but not, “I need to go” close to the door. Next thing I hear is him sprinkling there at the front door. I’m about 16’ from him and totally in view but he decides to just go.....I didn’t scold him at all, because I wasn’t sure it wasn’t my fault. I just said, “What are you doing?” Then I kind of gave him the cold shoulder. I wasn’t sure he should get in trouble or feel responsible for what happened. In other words, I wasn’t sure it was in his control. I’ve had him for about 2 months now and besides that first accident the first or second day I had him, we haven’t had any accidents. Until now. Thought about using the bells but this dog is not motivated by food or treats. Unless it’s human grade meat. I’ve bought a few different kinds of treats and he just doesn’t get excited about any of them......ideas? Is a bell a good idea for this dog? Should I skip that and train for a different cue? Now? He just comes to me and looks at me at night when we are in bed. During the day he walks to the door and just stands there. No noise, no hype, no anything. Total silence.

I've got my dog (1.5 years old) to ring the bell however he only rings it when I walk to the door. In other words, he's reacting to going to the door rather than being proactive and ringing it when he needs to go. He does walk to the door and he'll just sit there looking at you. Any tips?

I am fostering a 6 month old. She's been with me for more than a week, she has never went potty outside. It doesn't matter how long we walk, if we walk or stay in a small area like you say in other videos, she just doesn't associate outside with doing her business. I have another dog and I was hoping that at least she can learn through imitation but no luck.

I know you don't care for choke collars, but I always removed and hung em on the door knob when the dogs came back in. My last 2 dogs would either rattle the chain or bring it to me with a very expressive look on their face. "Morning dad, time to go." Its all about consistency.

My dog is 4 months old and I rescued him 5 days ago. I live on the second floor of a condo and in the midst of creating a porch potty. The porch potty is really used for early mornings right when he gets up or when it’s too dark to go for a walk. After meals, we go for walks where he also uses the bathroom. He technically has two places to potty. How can I use this method appropriately and Is it too late to try this method??

I have a 7 month old Beagle. He's half way potty trained I guess you'd say.
I'm able to bring him to work with me, and besides with him waking up or eating (when I automatically take him) he usually tells me when he has to go outside usually by going to the gate or talking (boggling ) at me. BUT when we get home everything goes out the window! he'll show NO signs of having to go potty. and then just BAM goes potty right in front of me. I'll make a noise or something to get his attention run him outside. but the last week sometimes he'll come back in, and then less then 30 mins later go again inside.

I adopted a three year old, generally well behaved spoodle. Problem: he has one signal for everything, barking at me. It can mean pee, poop, hungry, play, walk. We are constantly guessing and offering him everything. He does not progress beyond the barking and will continue barking. How can we get him to understand that he can get what he wants if he just points or looks or goes to a particular place or whatever? All we get is endless "want something! want something!" I will look at your other videos to see if you have talked about getting a dog to start being specific about what they want. p.s. incessant barking ... we can tolerate (ignore) that, but it bothers neighbors, so we really need to solve this.

I did this for about 3 weeks to teach the routine but, how do I transition my dog from barking when I prompt her with “wanna go outside” while holding the leash, to her barking at me in the next room, unprompted, to let me know she needs to go out? My dogs just quietly poops in the house if I am not watching her every move. Why cannot she just bark to let me know? Even when she does bark, it’s quiet, and only once every 5 minutes. How do I train her to keep barking until she gets what she’s asking for?

I've had experience with dogs that my family and friends have owned but until recently never had a personal pet that was all mine. Before now I was always prepared to jump in to help someone potty train because it's one of the biggest frustrations for both people and pets. People will often even give up animals they've had for a year or two, sometimes more, because they're "unable" to get the dog to potty in the right spot. I think in all cases where there isn't an underlying medical condition the owner is at fault. It's not what they want to hear but it's usually the truth. Especially with small toy breed dogs.
I've had a couple toy chihuahuas that I've been able to "train" in only a weekend. The reality is that these dogs already knew where they're supposed to go and they even want to go outside themselves. However the smaller the dog - the smaller the bladder. So when a tiny dog says it needs to go, it needs to go NOW. It can hardly wait five seconds sometimes, let alone five minutes.
In one case the chihuahua only had one accident, almost without fail, every time it came to visit for a weekend stay. After a 20-30 minute car ride they would bring the dog straight inside without making it potty before it went inside and got excited. Once I realised that they didn't do this themselves I would always turn the dog right back around and take it outside again. But if I didn't there was bound to be a puddle. Then the dog wouldn't have any problems for the rest of it's stay. When they took her home was another story entirely though.
A lot of the times with dogs we expect them to listen without us even trying to hear what they're telling us. This was the biggest lesson I learned with my Chocolate Lab Mix. He trained me as much as I did him. I only had to find out the hard way a few times before I realized I had to pay attention when he bugged me. He was never as persistent as when he need to pee. Usually we only had this predicament late at night or early in the morning when I would be trying to sleep. He would huff and prance around, his normal attention grabbing tactics, but if those didn't work he was on me like skin on a snake. He would jump up in the bed and literally lay his body across my back, licking at the nape of my neck and nuzzling the hair there and pulling down whatever pony tail I had left. After two minutes or so of getting nothing back but some pets and rubs he would jump down and the next thing I'd hear was the telltale splatter of puppy puddles. He'd pee just enough to get me up and moving before he'd actually stop and wait to do the rest outside once we got there. Needless to say it didn't take me weeks to figure out he meant business when he had to do business!

Yes, the challenge with letting your puppy sleep in your bed, is that they never learn to be able to go in a crate. There are lots of reasons why it’s important for your puppy to be comfortable in his crate (having to stay at the vet, transporting him safely in a car, plane or train, giving him somewhere safe to stay while you’re traveling). If you do want to teach your puppy to love his crate I do have a video that will help😉 th-cam.com/video/sBHJj5bqIkE/w-d-xo.html

Cool but what do I do for my dog that gives absolutely no indication that she needs to go outside? Like she sniffs a bit but she also just sometimes sniffs a bit anyway and I can't just pick her up and run every time she sniffs something. She's nearly 2 years old and still completely refuses to indicate her need to go. I'm sick of the mess. She will just go anywhere she wants. There's nothing wrong with her, already took her to the vet to check. She also does go outside when I take her out in the morning and during the day then last thing at night. She won't go to the door and whine. If I say wanna go outside? I say it in the same tone then immediately take her out. I say it to ask her and then bring her. She doesn't connect it at all. My mum's dogs come to her and sit and make a tiny bark to be let out. So I asked her advice and she told me all the same things she does that I do. My dog is just lazy.

My bulldog only walks on walks. Has never once pottied anywhere but his own yard. He is trained for pee pads (when it's way too hot or cold outside) and potty outside. If we aren't quick enough (pee pad is in front of the door to go potty outside) he will just go on the pad. Our problem is he doesn't alert with a sound but there's a wall blocking our line of sight to the door. My vet told me if I don't want him using pads, we'd need to start over potty training him as if he was a new pup and stop the pads. Of course, that means some accidents and introducing the bell method so he alerts with sound.
My point is, more than likely, unless you start potty training from scratch and totally ditch the pads, your pup will never potty on a walk. He has to unlearn what he knows and re-learn the new potty method.

I am at a loss. First, I generally have zero issues with potty training dogs. I foster with rescues and have very few issues quickly and easily potty training these dogs. Feral or dogs left outdoors are usuallly easiest for me because they want to go outside. My daughter recently moved home short term (six months) with two recently adopted beagles from the shelter that were found in a dumpster. They are very sweet, eager to please, and VERY food motivated. The issue we are having is that by all indications, these were puppy milled dogs and have zero issues peeing or pooping in their kennel. They will go outside and pee/poop multiple times and to to their kennel and pee again and lay in it with zero problems. They will go outside, do their business, and come straight in and do it again within a minute. Putting belly bands on them save the floors but they have zero problems eliminating in them as well. They will also eat poop literally as they are eliminating....before it ever hits the ground. And yes, we have put the additives in it to make this unappealing. We are in over our heads with this one. Oh...and they have been medically assessed. One did have a uti but it is clear now. Also just for info, they are kenneled together because they are SERIOUSLY bonded and they are extremely stressed with any form of separation. Any advice?

Hi there, Diane! Marking the moment that your pups make a mistake will be an important part of the learning process for them. Even if they're in their crate. Try to keep their crates in an area where you can see or hear them when you think they may have an accident. When they start to go, you can teach them that they are making a mistake. Here's a video for you to watch so you're prepared for when that happens: th-cam.com/video/L1KqfQOSrKs/w-d-xo.html

Love your videos. Can a puppy be indoor and outdoor potty trained at the same time?

My 11 week old puppy is starting to get the hang of potty pads indoors. However, he has started to lift his leg up to pee occasionally so I want him to go outside. How do you transition from pads to outdoors?

So I'm super consistent, super scheduled. I started this from day one with my pup. I am self-employed so I have been able to be home with him a lot, I took him out every hour etc etc. He now comes to work with me everyday. And has only had two accidents because I take him out and pick up on his signals. But at home, he refuses to give me signals. He hides! I take him out 15 minutes after eating, then another 20 minutes later. If he falls asleep I take him when he wakes up.... But for some reason, when he's in the house he doesn't tell me he needs to go out, he just hides. I use the same words, the same phrases, I praise him.... I am consistent regardless of where I am, but he is not. Any idea as to why? He is a 16 week Swiss Shepherd. The only thing I can say is that I think sometimes because he has an older brother, he needs to go more frequently at home because he's playing with him.... But he still doesn't communicate and that's frustrating. But yet at my store, he totally does. 😢

Okay, so I do pick my puppy up and carry her out, however she has an excited bladder and she will either leak a bit, or more if she’s super excited. How can I help manage bladder issues like that? I’ve been taking her out often but she still struggles.

My dog is good about going outside in the morning. I would like her to bark while standing at the door several times .. to bark and let me know to let her out . Once out and I am inside the house to bark to call me to let her in. What do I need to do ???

How do u train pup to indicate it needs to go? I take 5 mo pup out every morn to potty but he completes task after a 30’ walk! How do I make him “go” sooner? Also, when indoors, he doesn’t give any signs...just pees random places even though I still have 1 potty pad in a spot he occasionally remembers to use.
If I need to leave for an errand, how can he be trained to hold it til I return?

Hi there, Bruin Mom! There are lots of questions there. By following the above video, you'll start to learn the signs that your puppy needs to go outside. At the same time, you'll be teaching them that when they give you those signals, that you will let them out! That way they will begin to give you a consistent signal that they need to go out to potty. If your puppy is having accidents in your home, be sure that you're supervising them closely. When they have an accident you can mark that behavior with a word. This video will show you what to do if your puppy has an accident in your home: th-cam.com/video/L1KqfQOSrKsB/w-d-xo.htmly using your crate you can quickly teach your puppy to hold it. Here is a video that will show you how to teach your puppy to love their crate:th-cam.com/video/sBHJj5bqIkE/w-d-xo.html
