BaronVonGrumble Doesn't work as well I work for an insurance company and deal with theft every day, they have jammers or they just find the tracker and rip it off, then if the bike is found Your waiting for the Police to check the bike for fprints and wait 1 month.Theres just no other way to keep these fuckers from steeling other than maybe cutting the hand off ☺ that would teach them.
Brilliant Grumbling as always! I cant believe motorbikes don't already include trackers these days, then charge owners subscriptions... I spend so much time in lane one (aka the fast lane!). When is members club BaronVonGrumble House opening?
when my yamaha yzf was stolen my insurance only paid out £400 of the £2600 they told me its worth. i knew id lose the excess but i dont know what they done with the other £700. The police also wouldnt look into it because they said it would take too long. However when i went into the police station to report it i got told different plans as to when i phoned them a few weeks later. My case was dropped minutes after reporting it and i was set back £2000 within a few weeks. Having to buy a new bike and paying for costs to get to work. Now my insurance has gone up from £1400 to £2400 for a £900 bike. Doesnt put me off but its a shame, its like the victims get punished.
It simple... in New Orleans, it was a widespread problem where thieves would steal smartphones right out of their hands. It got to where you were advised to NEVER take your phone out of your pocket in the French Quarter. Then.... ios7 came out, and fingerprint scanners came out as well. I still abide by the 'stick floating down the river' analogy to this day. If you make other drivers brake as you filter, then you're filtering incorrectly.
Hi Baron I've had two bikes stolen in Wimbledon in a "secure" underground car park My insurance is now ridiculous, I've had to buy a turd of a R6 and insure it third party If this goes it's time to hang up the helmet and give up My life long passion destroyed
You seem like such a good guy! thanks for the videos, i love hearing you speak. you act so positive regardless of what is happening but are realistic, you're a good person it seems. u dont take it out on anyone.
I'm probably going to get shit for this but I will still blame the parents. Leaving the raising of children to the computer, the television, unsupervised and uncorrected when they do shit that should be corrected, well you get people with no respect for anyone or anything.
I need your wisdom..If I get a PCV I don't need the auto tune if I get it Dyno Tuned right? Everyone says to get the ECU flashed but I figured just get a PCV instead. I have a RSV4 Factory
Actually, once the tracker subscription runs out, some people won't pay, but a significant number would end up renewing it, so i'm sure the tracker companies would love to do that kind of deal.
Had my S1000RR stolen while I was working in London. It's a horrible feeling, coming out and your pride and joy not being there. I worked hard for that god dammit! The police were good in dealing with the whole thing. They know how they operate, and I had a PCSO call me to say she and her colleagues had been keeping an eye out in the local area. BMW can actually track the bikes location. However, they can't use that information as data protection prevents them from actually using the function in a lot of countries. One of their breakdown mechanics told me that it's fitted as part of the ECU, but its disabled at the factory. I might have had my bike back if they could share that information with the police :-(
Completely agree. I just recently moved to a city that has high car/motorcycle theft. I do no longer feel confident parking my bike anywhere outside overnight. It really sucks.
I definitely agree that pretty much every bike should have a damn tracker on it at this point. Its cheap, easy to do and would be a huge detraction from people stealing bikes.
It isn't cheap £300 + £100 subscription. You need a tracker with GPS, GSM and a beacon, and a subscription for an agent to locate and get a warrant to search the area. Most stolen bikes are hidden in containers, garages, etc.
hmmm I actually work in GIS (digital mapping) as my day job and I also work with GPS units so I do have quite a bit of knowledge when it comes to GPS receivers etc. And I guess you are right they can be a bit expensive. I just thought at this point we could put some sort of chip in there and use a simple app on our phone in order to track our bike...I feel like there should be a pretty inexpensive way to do that at this point but perhaps the technology still isn't there yet....
Jaret Campisi you can do exactly that. You don't need this fancy subscription fee. All you need is a GPS module and a GSM module and connect them with something like raspberry pi. Then you can text it to start etc and it'll text you back or use data to upload the GPS location and you can use Google maps. The only thing you have to pay for is upfront 60-70 and a PAYG Sim. I'm currently working on building this and hoping to sell it one day which will be much much cheaper than all the other options out their that have tracking. It's not impossible just hard.
Awesome, happy to hear that! I knew there was a way. If you get that sorted out semi inexpensive and working well, you could do VERY well in the motorcycle business :)
Totally agree with all this. My bike (Triumph Street Triple) was stolen 2 days after I got it in Edinburgh... was my first bike, and had only passed my test 48 hours earlier, first time I parked it in public. Teenagers stole it in broad daylight with witnesses, it had an alarmed disc lock on it which they had off in seconds, all purely for a joy ride. I found photos and videos of them on it on Instagram and Facebook, eventually it lead to me getting the bike back after 4 days which was super lucky, but they did £1600 worth of cosmetic damaged to it. Ultimately, it has totally affected how I use my bike now... I'm too paranoid to leave it anywhere now, so I wont use it for commuting, it's become a weekend toy, which isn't really why I got a license. The thieves are ruining biking ad like you say; the manufacturers are going to feel the effect so trackers seems like a small price to pay to help the issue.
I lived/rode in Houston (a city in a concealed carry state) in the 90's and heard many stories whilst waiting for rides to start about how an attempted theft turned into a pistol whipping for an unsuspecting thief. I didn't feel the need to carry myself, but to this day I still haven't parked a bike with as much confidence as I did in Houston.
fair points, some manufacturers have the function to track their cars already. insurance company can at least balance the premiums based on the high possibility of retrieving the stolen bike to be sold to recoup costs.
The problem with the concept of factory trackers is that the thieves would know where they are located and take care of them. Right now the biggest advantage trackers have is that it's up to the owner to decide the placement, and a thief won't have time to check all over the bike to find it when he's stealing it so a good placement can be quite effective.
Bike manufacturers around the world won't include trackers in their bikes, across all models and types just because people have an easy time stealing motorcycles in London. A real solution, like you said, lays with changes in the judicial system but you will need a strong lobby to get this on their agendas. Its all very ironical by the way, with all the cctv in London...
I left biking (on the roads), too much hassle, too much worry, too long to get the gear on and get out so I went back to cars. I don't live in a city so I don't have to worry about traffic. I work less than 2 miles from home. Life is good.
Nothing to do with this vid. But... Ever since seeing a few of the new GSXR 1000 reviews, and first rides and such I can't wait to see a BaronVonGSXR review 🙌🏼
I couldn't agree more about the tracker suggestion Baron. I don't know if you've seen that video circulating a while back, showing two guys breaking the steering lock on a bike by rocking the handlebars to full lock so violently a few times and voila, they were off with the bike. If it could be done by hand that simply without any special tools then these steering locks are a joke and the manufacturers really need to pull their socks up and use more robust approaches. Also, steal a bike, lose a hand. It's that simple.
Bike crime is rife in Edinburgh, and we have seen comments of people with Trackers fitted, telling the police where bike is and giving tracker details but police not moving quick enough.
The problem with including GPS devices from the factory is that they're really easy to defeat on bikes. Even if you build the electronics into the frame or some secure area, you still need to have the cellular antenna in a location that isn't encased in metal, or no workey. Moreover, all that will ultimately do is cause thieves to spend a few extra bucks on a cellular / gps jammer to steal your bike. There's also the issue of battery usage-- anything with real time tracking sucks a lot of juice, which isn't so great on a small bike battery. The solution as you said is to punish the criminals. If you can make an easy buck and at worst are getting a slap on the wrist, there's absolutely no incentive for that behavior to stop.
Might be odd, But with more motorbikes having various technology inside these days to have some sort of sync with phone to start and to track on your own phone, E Bikes have this and it works for that, theres obviously a lot of other stuff to think about though.
Mate you are so right, last week some idiots tried to steal my Street Triple in Knightsbridge, during day time inside a bloody car park! They damaged the ignition, Police came and they said nothing could be done and they even told me that it is out of control the number of motorbikes stolen in London. Now I have to take 2 disc locks, a chain and a cover every single day to go work, it really puts me off of riding. In fact this is one of the reasons why I gave my notice at work, I just hate riding in central London.
totally agree mate.. I was in a similar situation when my bike got nicked a year ago which put me off when I tried to get the insurance on another bike. ...finally decided to get a Honda 125, 2nd hand once again and soo got Bike Trac system installed . And guess what a week later after I got the tracker installed my bike got nicked again..Thankfully by Gods grace BIke Trac traced the bike with the help of Police and the worst part is after I got the bike back home...I soon covered it and put all possible locks and the thugs came back again a few hours later , probably in the early hours to try again.....I found the bike cover partially removed. It still puts me off though thinking at some point it will get stolen agian
Yes! thank you! It's so weird that they haven't been installing trackers as standard nowadays. And I prefer to filter behind another biker. At least here in belgium. Because when the person in front passes cars, the cars are more alert for another biker that might pass (me in that case).
Spot on about motorcycle manufacturers. I've got a tracker or two in my bikes just in case and watch where I leave it. Immobilisers and trackers should be standard, but car parks should all be made safer and accountable too. They are taking good money off you and take no responsibility! That's bollocks! There's a car park in Derby that's statistically one of the 10 most secure places on earth. Google 'parksafe derby'. Always use it when in town! And it was a 'retro fit' not a purpose build!
Agreed it should totally be treated as a serious crime. I also think they should be forced to pay a part of their benefits or future wages to pay off you additional insurance costs. Or forced to hand over goods worth the cost of your additional insurance costs.
Your intro makes me want to get a top hat and fart arse around with it lol. Man riding in London seems a bit nightmare-ish! I agree with the trackers 100%. You can probably buy one individually.
the amount of times iv heard of people getting bikes with trackers stolen then going to the police and them saying they cant do anything is unbelievable
Actually I think it would be nice as a manufacturer of bikes to included some sort of anti theft device. With Sinnis I have thought about it, and had many meetings about it before. Particularly with London/Brighton bike theft problems. The problem though, is as soon as you include anti theft "tracker" or anything else for that matter, it becomes part of the sold unit. Meaning, if that bike gets stolen - the onus is on the tracker providing the location of the bike. And if it doesnt, (removed by thieves, failure of device, etc etc) then people would blame the brand, and not the product. Saying - "Its Sinnis fault I cant find my bike". Its a shame because I would love to help people feel more secure with their bikes.. Ive had one stolen before and I was gutted. This is why we say to people "its up to you to provide the security, you think strong enough for your bike" - after all its your machine you are protecting. I even looked into Smart Water - which is an excellent product, but the feedback I received was "its too late once the bike has been stolen. Damage is done, parts are robbed" etc, and also with Smart Water, its only when the criminal is caught by the Police, that they "may" find he is the same guy/girl who nicked your bike. Again - too late. Also now there are a few trackers for motorcycles and scooters on the market that a relatively affordable, for you as a rider to look at. I believe Oxford Products sell one for about £200. But if you add that to the cost of the bike (plus fitting) at the time of manufacture, someone who lives in a "no crime" zone would say "I dont want that on my bike. Id rather have the money off" - is a catch 22, but I though I would say our stance as a manufacturer of bikes and scooters at Sinnis - Mike
a friend of my sisters son came back to his bike and saw someone trying to steal it he went ballistic done a hell of damage to the thief, police and ambulance called, now the police might be taking HIM to court for unnecessary use of violence.
I wonder if using proper crypto to lock to ecu wouldn't already help. If you can't unlock the ECU without the key and replacement ECUs are expensive and hard enough to come by that might make stealing bikes a lot less attractive as well.
One of my little sausage slogging thieves got 6 months, it took a lot of hard work from me with the police and courts, but I wasn't expecting him to get banged up, so that was an OK..ish result. I'm hoping he's found somebody to love him while he's in there, laying down some real love day and night, bringing a little tear to his eye :D
amen to that, nearly had my bike stolen a couple of months back an yesterday I got my number plate swiped off the back of my bike. both in broad daylight with my bike chained up....what can we do
And this is the reason I no longer have a bike. My Sprint was inked in broad daylight last year. Insurance paid out much less than the value, then the premium went up from £250 to £2500. 1 month later, my bike was recovered and offered back to me for the same amount as they paid out, but by this point I couldn't afford to insure it! Bike crime in London is rife.
do what lots of people do. Have a hack / rat for London stuff. More fun as well, less to worry about. Old XT600 or similar recommended, kick start only = makes it light and harder to nick should anyone be crazy enough to try. No one is going to bothers putting it in a van. Old 400s are excellent too. Average cost: 1/20th of an HP4 and better in cities in every way. You know it.
We should set up our own biking community tracker company and called it - "Track & Whack! - We Track and We Whack the toerag who stole your bike".
RevvedUpBiker I'm up for this. you're funding it though yeah? ;)
RevvedUpBiker that's a brilliant idea man!
THIS^
But don't forget to forgive them after :-)
Only if they repent. All we want them to do is not to steal peoples bikes. If you want a bike then just buy your own. I've heard the bike thieves are carrying acid and machetes. :/
Love the old school format Baron. Appreciate you don't drive in and out of London anymore but I still love it when I see these videos come out.
"Tracker"
Got the same Bike trac 'Tracker' on my er6f 2016.

The problem with "Tracker"s is thieves can buy GPS jamming / blocking devices that render the "Tracker"s useless for about £60 =(
I have fitted a tracker to my bike. Best before 10/17
Brilliant Grumbling as always! I cant believe motorbikes don't already include trackers these days, then charge owners subscriptions... I spend so much time in lane one (aka the fast lane!). When is members club BaronVonGrumble House opening?
"Tracker must be fitted to the bike for the insurance to be valid" wave good bye to your payout when the thief removes the tracker haha!
when my yamaha yzf was stolen my insurance only paid out £400 of the £2600 they told me its worth. i knew id lose the excess but i dont know what they done with the other £700. The police also wouldnt look into it because they said it would take too long. Baron, love it when your vids are so topical and on point like this one. Nice to see you posting more again too
It simple... in New Orleans, it was a widespread problem where thieves would steal smartphones right out of their hands. It got to where you were advised to NEVER take your phone out of your pocket in the French Quarter. Then.... ios7 came out, and fingerprint scanners came out as well. Now, it is impossible to steal an iPhone and use it for anything besides parts because of how impossible it is to crack their software. Thieves now skip over iPhone users and steal high end androids instead, because the potential of profit is so much higher. So do it like this: put a GPS and fingerprint scanner on every bike, and tie the engine and CPU to this. If they are disassembled for parts, they will not work unless unlocked by the fingerprint scanner or remotely via a 'find my Honda' app like the iPhone. The ECUs on these bikes are quite complex, and it wouldn't be anything to put this feature on every new motorbike made. GM has been doing OnStar in their cars for over a decade, and if someone lifts your Caddy, just pick up the phone and call GM, they will tell you exactly where it is.
Curtis Lenox this is doable. The ECU can be coded to only allow parts to operate that return the correct security code or else it won't start the engine.
ECU check at startup:
Ignition barrel code,
headlight code,
all injectors,
fuel pump,
exhaust sensors codes,
gearbox code,
engine code,
etc etc.
Would reduce scrap parts value, all parts traceable etc.
scratch exhaust sensors. i need a loud pipe
This would work, but only to a certain extent. The way things are these days the inbred little benefit claimants will still steal £15k bikes even if the only things they can sell on are the parts unaffected by some kind of fingerprint scanner (like wheels, mirrors, fairings, seats, chains etc).
I still abide by the 'stick floating down the river' analogy to this day.
If you make other drivers brake as you filter, then you're filtering incorrectly.
nail on head baron..courts and legal system simply zero deterrent for these clowns
The court system is so weak in dealing with criminals.
2 classic Baron vids in a week. Good stuff cheers.
love these style baron vids. that final post credits line is so right
Got BikeTrac in all three of my bikes! Worth every penny!
Hi Baron
I've had two bikes stolen in Wimbledon in a "secure" underground car park
My insurance is now ridiculous, I've had to buy a turd of a R6 and insure it third party
If this goes it's time to hang up the helmet and give up
My life long passion destroyed
Daniel Ricketts hope things get better for you what a nightmare

Just like old time aye Baron, a proper winge while filtering. Love it!
Was just watching a video of yours from 2013, then i get notifications of a new upload! Win win!!
Another video with so much YES! feel like I don't need to grumble about things are you are doing it for the collective!
lol the degree colder chat every year is spot on lol
great stuff, Baron, love the philosophical mutterings!
Ah the commentaries of the Baron... Excellent!
classic baron content! man I've missed this in my life!

The Baron and RJ both in one day!
I will now be looking to install a tracker bar within my motorcycle. Thank you Squire.
Thankyou for the exhaust AJ!

Thank goodness we don't have to worry about theft in filthy Cleveland. Not as nice as London here, but hey.
650ib especially with your Jizzy garage!
BaronVonGrumble Lol! Thanks man!
I am high AF right now. This is so weirdly satisfying.
This is why just like you baron I either park somewhere hidden or somewhere so obvious e.g by the main door of an establishment lol
The problem with the concept of factory trackers is that the thieves would know where they are located and take care of them. Nothing to do with this vid. But... Ever since seeing a few of the new GSXR 1000 reviews, and first rides and such I can't wait to see a BaronVonGSXR review 🙌🏼
I ride a 1980s Honda VT500 with 290k on the clock, is that classed as a 'shitter'?
Has it ever been rebuilt ?
only the selector fork
I think that would be classed as "getting your monies worth" kinda bike
its a dogger
E Williams Indeed it is.
I see you brought the grumble back 👍🏻

And guess what a week later after I got the tracker installed my bike got nicked again..Thankfully by Gods grace BIke Trac traced the bike with the help of Police and the worst part is after I got the bike back home...I soon covered it and put all possible locks and the thugs came back again a few hours later , probably in the early hours to try again.....I found the bike cover partially removed. It still puts me off though thinking at some point it will get stolen agian
It's official then... Stick a tracker chocy bar under ya seat and ya bike will never go missing ;) Baron saves the day once again hahah
Yes!
Next bike I get will have a tracker for sure. Unsure why this not a standard option for new bikes in this age.
I thoroughly enjoyed this rant haha. I agree, manufacturers need to make anti theft systems found on cars available to bikes.
Your intro makes me want to get a top hat and fart arse around with it lol. Man riding in London seems a bit nightmare-ish! I agree with the trackers 100%. You can probably buy one individually.
Good idea with the tracker!
Watching old BVG videos in the corner of a hot room eating water melon on vacation.
Didn't even flinch at the Lamborghini at 2:42 but then I guess they're all over the place in London.
"Tracker with remote C4 detonation when the thief is on the bike", haha
here, if they get caught in act by the friendly neighbors, they get a good bashing, if they're lucky enough the police comes in time to stop them ;)
the amount of times iv heard of people getting bikes with trackers stolen then going to the police and them saying they cant do anything is unbelievable
woo the moto vlogs are back. More pls.
Baron do you have Lo-Jacks (American-made stolen car trackers) over there? Maybe one of those would fit inside your bike.
Hey Baron, any word on when the 44t Rewards for HMQuickshifters will be up? It's been "coming soon" for a while now.
I read recently that bike theft in London had increased approximately %650 since 2015!
Baron what happened to the 899... I'm debating on a 899 or s1000r.. just wondered if u didn't like it, you only had it for a couple of reviews cheers
Id rather have the money off" - is a catch 22, but I though I would say our stance as a manufacturer of bikes and scooters at Sinnis - Mike
baron at berkeley square, such a nice part of london
Now I remember why I love biking.....
So you forgot to drain the member in the members club?
As for trackers - build them into the ECU and/or the instrument display cluster.
double bloody tracker!
a friend of my sisters son came back to his bike and saw someone trying to steal it he went ballistic done a hell of damage to the thief, police and ambulance called, now the police might be taking HIM to court for unnecessary use of violence.
I wonder if using proper crypto to lock to ecu wouldn't already help. If you can't unlock the ECU without the key and replacement ECUs are expensive and hard enough to come by that might make stealing bikes a lot less attractive as well.
Been a while since I've heard your lovely, helmet constricted voice
One of my little sausage slogging thieves got 6 months, it took a lot of hard work from me with the police and courts, but I wasn't expecting him to get banged up, so that was an OK..ish result. I'm hoping he's found somebody to love him while he's in there, laying down some real love day and night, bringing a little tear to his eye :D
Some good old BVG👍
amen to that, nearly had my bike stolen a couple of months back an yesterday I got my number plate swiped off the back of my bike. both in broad daylight with my bike chained up....what can we do
All hail the voice of reason
And this is the reason I no longer have a bike. My Sprint was inked in broad daylight last year. Insurance paid out much less than the value, then the premium went up from £250 to £2500. 1 month later, my bike was recovered and offered back to me for the same amount as they paid out, but by this point I couldn't afford to insure it! Bike crime in London is rife.
Double Bloody Tracker
Couldn't agree more re your comment on the judicial system. No deterrents...
yep had my bike stolen last year (not in london) was only there an hour.... Haven't bothered to replace it
do what lots of people do.
