    The smart motorway thing would be okay if it worked but the main problem is having to do 50 because of 'the workers' that are never there..

    WE THE DRIVERS ARE IN CONTROL - SIMPLE EITHER HAVE A DRIVE SLOW PROTEST ON ALL SMART MOTORWAYS UNTIL THE HARD SHOULDER IS REINSTATED OR BOYCOTT THEM ALTOGETHER

  • @freshprince8484
    @freshprince8484 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    At first they told us the reason for speed cameras is because speed kills
    Now on smart motorways they say slow down as if you ignore the speeding signs you might end up in a traffic jam!!!!
    It is an insult to the public that they can get away with this.

    I totally agree with your opinions here!!!! So many people do just sit back and put up with crap and when someone complains such as you and I, we're considered weirdos! The motorist contributes around £70-100 BILLION per year to the treasury and 9% gets spent on the roads! Smart motorway? What's fecking smart about losing the hard shoulder???? Great video.

    Baron you are so right, I'm a truck driver and I work nights. Closures everywhere I go - M5 M4 M42 M6 M1, people just wouldn't believe it, that's not even mentioning A roads. Smart motorways don't even work once they are finished unless it is purely done to fine the motorist. They still get traffic jams on the M4 near Bristol and on the M42, it really is a total waste of time and money. By the way I have been on the M42 numerous times in the early hours and the speed limit signs have shown 40 then 20 then 40 then national limit ... and for what ? Just me and a reliant 3 wheeler on the road !!!! Bull Bull Bull..

    Spot on about the trustworthiness of those "smart" signs - often find myself ranting to my wife about them. The closest thing to "smart" motorways is using something like Waze which actually shows you real-time traffic speed & incidents. I find those signs are wrong 90% of the time and Waze is right 90% of the time. Rarely drive without it now.

    I enjoyed that rant. Mainly because I agree with almost everything you said. I've been saying for about 10 years that to solve many of this country's problems more people will/should work from home. However, I do think HS2 is a good idea and could allow people who have to work in London/South East to afford there own home further north thereby helping to equalise north/south house prices. Hopefully with HS2 built a lot of road freight can move onto the existing West Coast Main Line making the roads even more less congested. Incidentally it takes me 15 mins to get to work and because I cycle traffic is never a problem. 😜

      Martin Fisker I'm logistician, still an apprentice, and in my company we have people who buy and sell stuff... normal. They couldn't work from home ever. • @Morrismarina
    @Morrismarina 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think you make a valid point about the 'bullshit' albeit it's fortunately(?) only a minority of drivers who - out of arrogance, stupidity or frustration - actually choose to ignore the reduced speed limits because they think they know better (eg. that the stated reason for the delay is untrue). But here's why I think you're right about the "traffic engineering." I'm in SE London and regularly use the Blackwall Tunnel. There are currently proposals for additional river crossings downriver from Tower Bridge, including the possibility of another tunnel (at Silvertown) or a revised ferry. For quite some time, things have been at the 'consultation' stage. A while back, I started noticing that whenever I'd go there (only ever on a bike, I know it too well to take a car there) there would probably be major queues. Not just the weekday rush hour but any time of day and even weekends, too.It was almost as if someone *wanted* that traffic chaos, so that all the drivers stuck in it would reach breaking point and be ready to say 'Please, give us something ... *anything* ... that will give us an alternative to this, and make it quick!' Can you actually "engineer [the conditions that can create] traffic"??? I do believe you can!

    Average speed cameras on motorways are something I especially hate. By slowing cars down to 50mph (and it takes their average speed over a distance so you're forced to do 50), you're putting more cars into one space at any given time, which surely must contribute to congestion (as well as increased emissions).

    I have just been made aware of the purpose of "smart motorways". Caught speeding (68mph) on an empty M25 in a variable speed limit area. Dry roads, bright conditions, no traffic. 6 points and £650 fine. Glad to see that the police are addressing the problem motorist. Look for the easy buck officers that's the best way of effective policing.

  • @paulpearson3744
    @paulpearson3744 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm certain that when they flash the 40mph signs it actually causes traffic. speed limit should be 90 and heavy fines and points for people who block outside lane and protest the speed limit. also permanent average speed check on north circular is cancer. I go 45 in 40 cause I know all speedos are 10% slower than actually displaying but I still end up being undertaken by people who think they're clear to floor it once past a camera. it's highly problematic. great video anyway even if I am a bit late👍🍻

    You cant say the sign is lying when you don't know what the full situation is.
    If you want safer, higher quality road surfaces, you have to accept that you will face traffic.
    You have to consider that the government build and upgrade things to fit most people in the population.
    They do work at night time more because most people are spending time with their loved ones.

    Same for roadworks, if they are actually working on the road, then fair enough.. but i've been driving past one bit of road that has now been having roadworks for 3.5 years and they are hardly ever working.. still.. the police is mooooore then happy enough to sit at that point with speed camera's though..

    The best part of "smart roads" is when you see written "Traffic jam ahead, slow down.", but you are already being stuck in traffic for 30 minutes...

    I was riding into London the other week on my 675R and I got ranting to myself when I seen those number plates on cars, you know the ones with the blue European Union symbol with GB within the circle of stars? Why... Just, fucking why? That, and the whole fucking European Union in general, what is the point of it, why are we, the British, paying £55 Million a day (up until March it was something like £9 billion per year, at the end of this year it will be £10 billion, in three to five years time that figure will increase by another £3 billion) and for what? We don't make a profit out of it, the last time we did was in the early '90s. Because of trade? Bollocks! Don't need to be a part of the EU to trade! Then I got onto thinking about that HS2 bollocks, funnily enough you mentioned too, Baron. That was an epic rant, why we don't see Butterscotch flavoured ice cream, how does a snow plough driver get to work in the morning, and snow, yes. Why does this country come to a stand still when there's 1cm of snow? Norway don't! And this shit occurred before I got into London, imagine the shit that was about to hit, what sort of arse juice infested abuse am I going to come across. And that's the thing with this country, it's that steady fucking diet of disappointment, what the fuck! In the end, I just had a wank!

    Whoever thought of the idea in the first place is a right nuthead. They are sooo dangerous. For example, if you break down IN BETWEEN 2 refuge points on say the M6, what do we do? Do we just scramble out of the car onto the bank where we see our car get smashed to pieces and others injured. What about if we come to a sudden stop and it's busy? It is pretty certain someone will run into the back of us... The highways agency's response to this is: "We monitor the motorways 24 / 7 and close any lanes if we need to to prevent this kind of thing happening". So we've learned 2 things there already: 1 being that this scheme is just a massive toy network where they can get money out of you and play around with the traffic; 2 being that they can't even justify themselves to a proper answer to my statement when I messaged them. Monitoring isn't enough. You don't get lane closed gantries every metre, how are we meant to feel safe? Another thing being, what happens if there's a traffic jam and emergency vehicles need to get by. They would usually use the hard shoulder, but oh wait they don't exist anymore! So how are the emergency services meant to get by to help someone out of a car who is potientially injured (therefore requiring ambulance, fire service, and maybe police) which is holding the traffic. Highways agency is a load of bo****x when it comes to motorways

    • @LoadingRetroGames
      @LoadingRetroGames 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They don't monitor it as well as they could.. the M1 runs practically though my back garden so I have a great view of how all this works , I've seen vehicles breakdown and usually the lanes shut within ten mins , but I've seen a van breakdown and all lanes be active for 40 mins too

    • @LoadingRetroGames
      @LoadingRetroGames 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've also seen far more accidents now the hard shoulder has gone , there seems to be at least one a month just on the small bit I can see.. before that I saw only 2 accidents in 2 years, a lot of accidents come from rolling road blocks too, obviously the traffic behind the highways cars slow but then I see the braking get harder as more distance passes and on occasion somebody not concentrating smacking into the back of somebody..

    The reason they lie is so they can put the speed limit down to say 40mph. Consequently, the speed cameras turn on. Then they are getting money off you and there is nothing you can do. Fuck the roads

  • @thomaswilliams4543
    @thomaswilliams4543 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Apart from being 20 minutes quicker, I think HS2 is also meant to free up space on an already full existing main line. This means there is more room for local trains and freight.

    Cheer up Baron....might never happen. Could you review R1200RS looks totally jiz worthy? the highway agency stasi have complety fucked it up again on the M3, I've seen three accidents already near the M25 as the road narrows into the road works....very smart. It's technology gone mad if you ask me, what was wrong with the old misleading matrix signs, you knew where you were with those. 50mph for no reason then End. Now they're just messing with our minds.
    Great vid baron :-)

    I know exactly how you feel Baron about our motorways, I have to travel frequently for my job and it took me just under 3 hours to get from Moorgate to Farnham, because of the ridicolous amounts of roads closed which caused my Satnav to throw a wobbly

  • @chrisryan3445
    @chrisryan3445 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Know exactly what you mean.
    The M4/M5 interchange in Bristol is now "smart" and every morning there is a queue on the M5 turn off usually with a 40 MPH limit, so what do they do? Put the same 40MPH signs up over the completely clear M4 heading to Wales...
    The best one I seen was after an incident on the M4 way before the tunnels in South Wales, after filtering to the front of the queue the accident was plain to see, the police let me and couple of other bikes through - there was no space for cars - literally NO traffic for the rest of the run bar the odd car coming on at the junctions and still the congestion signs lit up for miles with 40MPH restrictions in place due to the invisible congestion.

    My uncle is very high up within the groups working on the motorway system, he works with both the british highway agency and the Dutch highway agency ( cant remember their official name ) also he is working in america to bring them up to date with theirs. The changes are actually crucial to getting the motorways working properly. The current / outdated system is not modular or universal so there are companies charging literally hundreds of thousands to " fix " the problems we have at the moment but are not actually fixing anything. This upgrading to a smart motorway is bringing in new software architecture so that when there is a problem they can effectively fix it. Also the new systems being put into place can actually collect information like speed / traffic density / traffic flow and other bits through signals being transmitted from the cars to be more effective. Also the motorways at the moment cant communicate with itself over long distances, example: there's a crash on the m1 that will have an effect on the m25, the motorway cant see this information with the current system so it cant effectively work with itself and its variable speed limits to increase traffic flow. The new system means every motorway and every information collection point can communicate and reduce traffic down time. I know its annoying at the moment ( i spend around 5 hours a day on average commuting ) but its a massive upgrade that needs to be done. It will take some time but if we don't do it the problem will never be addressed properly.

      +Jack Green None of this will make ANY difference except to have a negative impact on the UK motorist. It's all about money and nothing else.

    • @growlerjack
      @growlerjack 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you know how much the economy suffers from people being stuck in traffic? Yeah it's about money, but in this situation it's a positive thing for both the government and the people using the motorways.

      Whatever you say. The experience of those that use the motorways especially the so called smart M25 is extremely negative. The M25 is not known as the largest car park in the world for nothing. Smart motorways are geared up for extracting money from the UK motorist. Many of the new cameras on the M25 are operated by private companies so it is in their interest to earn revenue from these cameras and the smart motorway.

    • @growlerjack
      @growlerjack 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you not read my original comment? It's not finished yet and it won't be 100% effective until it is. They are operated by private companies because they are the companies that deal with the systems in place. I think I have enough experience of motorways, I be put 46,700 miles on my van this year alone. You're just angry because you are stuck in your ways. Learn to learn

    • @mickangel3945
      @mickangel3945 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jack Green First of all I'm not angry. Secondly I'm not stuck in my ways, stuck in traffic yes more often than not because of roadworks, accidents or the M25 smart motorway farce. 46k miles? Good for you. Uncle works on the motorways? Good for him. I refer you to my earlier reply that none of this makes any positive difference to the UK motorist. It only serves to line the pockets of private companies with yet more public money. I reckon you need to learn more about how the financial merry go around works in this country and pretty much elsewhere. This is a small county with too many vehicles on the road and no amount of smart cobblers will sort it out. I don't care how many signs your uncle puts up on the motorways there is no benefit to drivers.
