    While I enjoyed watching jazz pianist play the Autumn Leaves I also always wonder how they are able to improvise. Mr Tony Winston you are Godsend for you are able to explain everything like the II V I progression and the different available scales to be used blues scale mixolydian, dorian, ionion, in the chord changes and show us how they can be used.. Yes I agree you are a genius, brilliant, the best jazz teacher. . This tutorial like your other tutorials really helps a lot for us newbies to learn how to play jazz. Thsnk u so much!!

    Whoa, I've been struggling for two weeks to find interesting phrases using chord arpeggios on this one, but this trick you're showing here to find simple scales on II-V-Is rocketted my playing in less than 10 minutes. Many thanks to you sir for this really tasty and helpful video.

      You need to watch bill Graham’s videos on the Barry Harris method. It will take you months to tackle it all, in all 12 keys. But the system will change you’re life forever.

    Great Video Tony. Autumn leaves is a beautiful song. The A Min7b5 chord is a very unique chord.. I usually play it rootless.

    Do all scales have modes? For example what are the modes of the diminished, pentatonic, altered, or blues scales ?

    • @TonyWinston
      @TonyWinston  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      good question! for diminished i would say no, or at most - there are two modes, one starting with a half step, the other with a whole step. The minor pentatonic (1,b3,4,5,b7) could be considered a mode of the regular pentatonic. The blues scale has 2 commonly used modes. 1,b3,4,#4,5,b7 and the other mode would start on the flat3. here's a link to those two blues scales: goo.gl/lyP3WG. The altered, lydian dominant, and Locrian #2 scales are all modes of the minor melodic scale. Here's a link:

    Does it matter that the D chord has a F# but the blues scale doesn't? If not, why not!?

    • @TonyWinston
      @TonyWinston  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The official blues scale does not have F sharp. When you play the blues scale over a D7 chord the dissonance between the F sharp and the f gives the blues one of its characteristics sounds. But there is another bluescale for the key of D that has the F sharp.... D E F F# A B D. Really you can use all the notes from both scales. Hope that helps
