MY DRUM HEADS GET DENTED. WHY?

  • Yeah, I'm in a mood. One thing I cannot STAND is dented heads, and they are far too common. It seems like almost every time I sit in on someone's drums, there are DENTS in the heads. UNACCEPTABLE. They are totally unnecessary, and a sure sign that SOMETHING IS WRONG. It is shocking how loud a properly played and tuned drum can be. Without denting the heads. The mylar film on modern heads is darn near bulletproof. I'll post part two shortly. I attempt to dent a two ply heavy duty remo pinstripe first try. I've never dented a head, so I'm not sure how the experiment will pan out. And don't come around telling me I don't hit hard. I was actually known for being one of the louder drummers in the Southern Cal city I lived in. Being in Socal, there were PLENTY of other drumbers around to compare with. Some were very good. Here is a link to part 2: • watch me dent my drum ...

For anyone still around. Tuning your heads too low can cause denting as well.
So even if you get the angle correct, if the head is tuned too low, the head can’t absorb a hit evenly, which will cause denting.

That seems plausible. Thanks for the comment.

It all depends on your style of drumming I'd say.
No amount of stroke angle adjustment would've saved any Remo Pinstripe tom head from dents after Dave Grohl had his way with them with the rear end of a .600 diameter stick...
Supposedly he also only uses Aquarian High Energy heads for his snare as they are the only heads that won't break during a set.

"Normal" is the operative word. Thanks for commenting! 👍

He’s not playing properly if he’s denting new two ply heads reguardless. You start to choke the drum when you hit harder than a certain point anyway.

Old Pinstripes (made 30 years ago and older) = easier to dent but better sounding heads. Newer Pinstripes = harder to dent but worse sounding heads than old version.

I remember pinstripes sounding much deader back in the day, which is why I didn’t use them. They seem much brighter now…

@@karlplaysdrums New are too bright for my taste. Old was not dead on my Premier Royal drum kit.

Boy, you don't even play that drum set. Everything looks fresh out of the box.

Hitting way too hard if you’re denting two ply heads. This is why I don’t like letting anyone play my kit. People are idiotic barbarians. And heads are over 20 bucks a pop now.

Isn’t it amazing how much damage someone can do in seconds?
