No shade but Her friends and family have gotta be buying these for sure
Yes, for most of us that is likely where our first sales came from - but it seems that her items went viral beyond her followers
I like vintage matchbooks! This design is colourful. Wish I had thought of it myself 😂
I can see why so many were worried about tiktok going away cause that seems to be the #1 way that many people bring buyers to their shop or website. I think the algorithm is different on that platform where you can be seen really well. We all wonder how some of these sellers could have 6 items and sell 1000 in a month. It's them having a huge following. When you are already famous, it takes next to nothing to launch a shop without much effort because your effort started years earlier getting the following. Once you have that big following, then you can sell almost anything. Great video!
Thank you
Yes TikTok does seem to be very different - and in these cases they dont seem to have big followings, the algorithm gods seem to have smiled on them
Every maker's dream right there to have people saying, "How did you make that? Can I just pay you to make it for me?" 🙂 That's also very good to know that tiktok doesn't pigeonhole you to one topic. It seemed to me that Instagram was like that when I first got on it, but now it feels like I can only do one thing or the algorithm gets confused. My author/bookstagram account does well (well enough for me, at least) without having to try that hard because it's largely all about reading and writing books, but the one where I'm showing off my Etsy products, which are all book themed but are different *types* of book themed products... it just can't seem to wrap its little algorithmic brain around that.🤷🏻♀ I think that once (if) tiktok becomes downloadable in the US again, I'd like to give it a fair shot. I was tempted to try it before now, but didn't want to get on just to have it taken away...
Yeah she landed really lucky with everything aligning at the right time
I was very surprised and happy with that with TikTok too, I am not an expert but looking at peoples accounts it does seem you dont have to be so niche - things can take off
I love how you say Etsy
It’s see
There are a few people that already do this. She probably saw it on Pinterest or Etsy and copied it.
Yes I think so - it seems the first image said 'inspo' so she saw something, made it for her hubby - and then people asked her how to make it
I am so lost. What is the template for? Are you a smoker and need to buy matches? You can buy a cigarette lighter anywhere. In the end, what is she selling? What do you do with the template?
It is for wall art. So I believe you add logos to the boxes then print it out
She may get copyrighted issues if she does not legally have the commercial license for the matchbox pictures right? There are public domain matchboxs also so she just has to check.
They are TEMPLATES, and right now collage types like that are HOT. Then you can personalise it … so cassette tapes and old Photo Booth strips etc are put in the collage….so if people can put in their pics and names, voila! Remember weddings when you got one with the names and date.
I think the secret here is that men are hard to buy for. This gift works for husband, bf, fiancé, even dad and brother or son! So women would quickly share her vids with other women just in time for Valentine’s Day.
Good point
I looked her up on tiktok and it’s fascinating to me because she just copied and pasted all these images and then edited the logos and words on each image. I believe people like her and they felt inspired to go to her Etsy shop to make purchases. But it’s strange because they aren’t original. Is it legal?
You mean the actual matchbox pictures right?
@ yes she found all of those matchbox pictures on Pinterest and edited each one. Maybe it’s ok because she changed each one?
@@Angelaangelat I saw a lot on Canva also but even if you take a picture and edit it you can still get copyright issues so I’d be careful. I’m always afraid to get in trouble especially with trademarks also.
@ exactly! I totally agree
I think everyone here is completely missing the point of her shop!
She is selling TEMPLATES!
Customers download the artwork template and PLACE THEIR OWN IMAGES over the Template images of the matchboxes and matchbooks!
She is NOT SELLING art posters of the matchbooks or matchboxes copyrighted images, to print out and hang their your wall they way that you buy them as you see them in her shop.
The images you see are just generic placeholders for the customer to place their own images of matchbooks or matchbox covers over.
She also will do a completely custom designed layout for a higher price.
So no, she is NOT selling posters of copyrighted IP of matchbooks or matchboxes, just TEMPLATES of generic styles so people can choose a layout they like, and the place their own images over the clean and dimensional matchbooks or boxes that she scanned and arranged for top quality printing.
So she sells designs made from images downloaded from everywhere without any licensing. No, it is not legal to sell the design. It is fair use to show them in her video, though, that part is OK, but selling the result - totally not.
She is selling the TEMPLATES of the matchbooks and matchboxes that people can print out at a particular size AFTER they place their OWN PHOTOS of matchbooks and matchboxes OVER the covers.
So she found interesting matchbooks and matchboxes and scanned them in and cleaned them up.
She did layouts of them in interesting ways, and included drop shadows to make them have more dimension.
She is not selling images of matchbooks and matchboxes that are under Copyright, that you can just print out and hang on your wall.
The who,e point of her shop, is to sell TEMPLATES of the matchbooks and matchboxes so people can download them, and then place THEIR OWN IMAGES of matchbook covers or matchbox covers OVER the ones in her TEMPLATE.
If the average collector of these items just tried to set up a layout of their collection of matchbooks or matchboxes, and tried to take a photo of all of them together at once, without casting shadows, or overexposing some while underexposing others, etc., they would find it difficult to get a pleasing arrangement and successful exposure.
The TEMPLATES have done all that work for the collector already.
All they have to do is download the template they like, and drop in scans of THEIR OWN matchbook or matchbox covers.
I don't get it. Who would want matchbook prints in your home? I guess someone does but I sure wouldn't. Good for them, though.
Yeah I dont get the style myself, but clearly people like it. What I was trying to say really is we dont want to copy that shop, but find our own style - because there are people who will love it when they see it
The thing that amazed me is that people have been selling this same template on Etsy for years - it shows the power of a TikTok following. She didn’t make the template, it is years old. People like it because lots of people collect matchboxes at restaurants & hotels etc.
I am from Europe but I do not get obssesion with it, and obssesion with stickers and similar. You can critisize me, but I do not get it.
True, nothing is really new I guess :)
No criticism at all, most big trends have me scratching my head too. I dont get most of it
This infuriates me! So many people just ignoring the rules of copyright and doing whatever they want to. She literally just takes images and logos that are not ok to use and puts them on a matchbook image???! I could probably make that many sales in one day too if I didn't worry about copyright or infringement. 🤬
It is a trend I have seen lately using different style match boxes
So I am noticing. It is so funny how you never notice something then suddenly you mention it once and the algorithm goes wild and shows you it everywhere :D
Could be an AI created influencer, now gaming Etsy?
:D I never even thought of that. I dont think so in this case but that is a thing that could well happen in the future
Which shop already shut down, the desktop calendar girl or the one embellishing ready-made clothes? Never mind; I found it. It's the clothing chick. I wonder what happened and if she even embellished these herself.
Yeah I dont know what went on there, I am trying some digging
@PamDuthie Thanks, let us know if you ever find out anything.
9 days old and already have a ton of sales. The only logical way for this to happen is that people who bought come from her network of family/friends when she was teaching (her bio says she was an elementary school teacher). This would be a good way to start to get your ranking higher.
Her products are cool looking but not necessarily something that would create such a high demand. We will see if she can sustain this for the rest of the year.
I disagree because she has made OVER A THOUSAND SALES!
NOT just a handful of people from her network of friends and family.
That is a huge amount of people !
@ It is doable. 50 family members buying 5-10 assets a pop ($25-$50 donation). Then combine that with friends and school connections doing the same. You can easily achieve that quantity in no time.
I just opened a shop on Etsy (12/27/24), but the views and visits are so low it’s almost making me cry, even though I’ve already posted some products. I’m feeling really discouraged and don’t know what to do
Etsy is a joke. Once upon a time they were incredibly strict, until they started seeing how much money Chinese junk made their website, now it’s just Chinese wholesale labeled “handmade”.
people or should i say Sheeple love to buy a load of toot just because some 'influencer' is selling it. Christ on a bike!
A bunch of shops are already doing this and where she got the idea from, except she's doing it via TikTok. I don't want to use TikTok, the Chinese government doesn't even let Chinese people use it, but they are ok if the rest of the world does...... hmmm.
Yeah I know TikTok is a tricky issue
