What excellent advice. I am now retired but I successfully sold my art from 1988 to retirement in 2021. Your advice to “take control of your own sales” is exactly what I did. Yes, I had an Etsy shop from the time of their creation to my retirement but I used my Etsy Shop more like “an advertisement” to direct people to my Blog and Website where I sold my custom work directly to customers. So I had my own website, blog, I used Social Media, I did local shows, I got involved with art communities in person and online, I wrote articles for magazines in my field which lead to my work being featured in several books. My work sold worldwide. So, in my opinion your advice to take control of your own sales is what made my business success for over 30 wonderful magical years 😊❤🎉
As a buyer, it is so frustrating to know there are probably thousands of sellers I will never see because they are small. I wish we could search by newest stores but all my search results seem to contain are ads, huge sellers and people who pay to be seen. I can’t afford the time to scroll through crap in the hope of possibly stumbling onto something I might want.
Unfortunately I missed the Etsy boat and started my Etsy shop at the beginning of 2023 when everything started going downhill apparently LOL. I've never had any meaningful sales. I've kept it up though, hoping that it might gain momentum. I started my own website, but I don't get any traffic there because I haven't mastered the art of self marketing. Thank you for sharing this. It's really causing me to consider to stop hoping for sales and close my shop and put all of my focus into my website.
I completely agree with what you have said. I started selling, a few years back, from the UK, bespoke necklaces made from ancient artifacts, ancient coins and fossils amongst my own artwork in oils and acrylics. All pieces and artwork were one-off and unique. I also sold artifacts, ancient coins and fossils as individual collectors items. At first I was amazed at how much I was selling. Then, after some time, almost overnight it slowed right down and about two months ago sales stopped. Needless to say I dumped Etsy. As I am retired I did not choose to find an alternative way of selling my items. I feel sorry for all those sellers who are in the same position and rely on platforms like Etsy for their income - Greg
And their lack of stopping all the influx of NEW jewelry coming from drop shippers and China makes me irate. I also make one of a kind jewelry pieces and I think I've only sold one of my own pieces in the last year.
I am a lifelong independent artist. I left ETSY not far into its arrival, after I was accused of not making my own products(!). It wasnt good enough to tell them I made my own artwork. They demanded that I send them pictures of me making the products AFTER the fact. I told them I couldnt magically take retroactive photos of the process of making FINISHED artwork .. They wanted names & photos of employees I didnt have, and photos of my building, equipment, and workshop production areas; I didnt feel this was any of their business. The list of other demands was a page long. I walked.
I left years ago when they told us to lie to our customers and offer free shipping and raise our prices to cover it!!! Plus more!!! When they went on the New York Stock Exchange is when everything changed and went down!!!!!
Hi Emily, really appreciated your thoughts on what’s happened to Etsy over the last couple of years. It’s very similar to what happened to eBay some years ago and we small creators only have one option really that makes any sense and that is to leave. I quit eBay when they allowed mass production to overwhelm everything and prices for art plummeted. For awhile I thought I might be able to make it work on Etsy but recently it has dried up completely. So now I think I’m going to take your advice to heart and actually close my Etsy shop and focus on selling to people who know and care about my art. Thanks for producing such a thoughtful and careful video. Best of luck with everything you are doing, Diane x
As a consumer, I've recently found Etsy to be less inviting, less user friendly, and leaning more toward the Amazon model. Now I know why. Thank you for your insight! (Also, thank you for all the tips and training you provide through your videos. I often take notes and return to watch again!)
I stopped selling on Etsy several years ago because it just wasn’t profitable for my art type anymore. That kerfuffle with the Indonesian boat furniture lady was the beginning of the end. They had a chance to stay true to the business model of being for artists and handmade and they failed. Now, with “imported” items and print on demand, I think the last few handmade artists such as yourself are finally calling it quits. They should just change their name to Etsy Express since it reflects their actual business model.
YEEEEEEEEESSSSSS!!!!!!!!! I have been saying this to people for years!!!! I started back in 2009 with the coolest vision… a place created by artists, FOR artists! But not anymore. It’s all about being the big bucks now. When I heard they had a superbowl ad (at a cool million per minute) I understood where my fees were going. That and when they started allowing “manufacturers “ sell (aka mass produced, made in China junk) that was when I decided to bail too. It’s a tough transition but the goal is to never sell on ETSY again. They’re no different than any other corporation. But once upon a time they were fabulous. They really really were 😢
I agree with everything you said. I opened my first shop on Etsy in 2008 at one time I had eight shops and was doing very very well. I am now down to three shops and don't know how long I will be doing them Etsy has definitely left the handmade artist behind. But I am going to start my own website and work on the Internet app, but like you said, Etsy was so easy to do Good luck with your art oh my daughter also had a hand stamping jewelry site and made over $100,000 a year and now she can't even make a living with it it's so hard to be seen and if you're not seen, you definitely won't sell
I have had an Etsy shop for several years and have been thinking of cancelling it and concentrating only on my website. It is so hard to sell original art for the price it is worth on Etsy because many artist, like you say devalue their art. I have sold several originals over the years, but the price to keep my shop going and all my art active adds up to not much profit. So I think I will make the brake also.
I was a member of your mastery class for a year and really enjoyed it. I just got back from an 8 month tour of the country and sketched along the way and you helped me by encouraging my drawing skills. When I get back into my studio I will be able to have a wealth of ideas to paint. Thank you Emily
Good for you, Emily! Thanks for sharing your decision. Artists need to stand up for themselves. I'm really enjoying seeing who buys my paintings by selling at local venues. While a few have found their way out of state, most grace the homes of folks near me. Since they feel like my children, this makes me happy!
Oh boi your video is timely! Nobody listens to me about ai - people just don’t care if they are ruining the art market or our careers - as a retired professional artist - having made my bones with murals, faux and commissions - it’s heartbreaking 💔 because we’re not coming back from this. Thank you for your candid and sincere video on a subject very dear to me. ✨🕊️💚☘️💚🕊️✨
Good for you Emily! I've been on Etsy for several years and guess how many paintings I've sold? You guessed it. ONE! I think I'll follow your lead and drop my account as well. Thanks for the heads up!
I agree that Etsy has certainly changed - and not for the better. Good luck with your selling endeavors. Keep us posted on how they are working out. Shows and galleries are expensive
This is 💯 accurate, and unfortunately perfectly captures my experience with this platform 🫤 Sadly, Etsy went from being a perfect little home for creators (and those who support custom / handmade art) to an AI infested place where original images are being stolen, and the fees keep going up and up. I still have a couple of originals there, but once they are gone, I am done with Etsy for good 🤦🏻♀️ thank you for calling this out! I am seeing this video being shared all day in various watercolor groups 👌 this is clearly a very important subject.
It’s heartbreaking to see a platform we once loved morph into something so different, isn’t it? I’m sorry your experience has been so negative, too! Thanks, Anna, for chiming in! ❤️
I'm not an artist but I do sew, knit, and crochet items for myself and family members and people who see the items keep saying, "You should sell these on Etsy!" I always refuse. I wish I could explain to these well-meaning people that Etsy is *not* what people think it is (not anymore). I've never had an Etsy shop but I've seen so many of these types of videos, former Etsy sellers shutting down for multiple reasons exactly like those described here. It's pathetic how places like Etsy have turned on their own sellers, and worse how AI is taking over everything, making it difficult and often impossible for actual talented humans to make a living with their art -- whether it's fiber arts, painting, digital art, music, voiceovers, or anything else.
Same, I had 3 great years 2019-2022 for my custom art 25-60k a year to a point I was considering to quit my day job. In some point 2023 they flagged my shop, hold 75% of my income which was almost 2k a month because I was considered “high risk” not having fast shipping. My work takes 3-4 months to finish and every customer knows about it. At this point I only accept deposit listing on Etsy and direct them to my own website.
I’m so sorry to hear about the changes. That doesn’t speak much to those who are beginning hopefuls. Thanks you for the website recommendation. I am one of your watercolor mastery students and appreciate you so much!
so sad Emily but thanks for this heartfelt video. Its heart-breaking that people who put a lot of heart and soul into their own products get ripped off. Good luck to you and keep creating, youre so amazing at it !
I’m not surprised by the way etsy has gone, it’s unfortunate but I’ve been noticing these issues for years as well as a buyer. That clip of your paintings in that show/ movie was so cool! I’d be super excited too! Adorable how your hubby was so proud ❤
This is a sad tale. So disappointing that artists and their works are being devalued by greedy internet marketplaces, AI, and theft. Part of your story reminded me of an annual fall festival here in central Indiana. Years ago, original art and products were the primary offering. We’d walk and browse booth after booth and always come home with a bag or two (or three 😊) of original, handmade items (tole-painted wood, carpets, ornaments, etc). In the last 5 or 6 years most all of the products offered have been mass-produced, imported from China (says so right on the tag). What was once an awesome fall festival experience, a great venue for artists and creatives, has degraded into a glorified flea market of cheap, machine made products or “art” imported from the Far East. These things are priced so low true artisans can’t compete, so they no longer attend the events. So, we no longer attend either. Always hopeful that one day this will change back to its origins, but it likely won’t be anytime soon. I’m sorry to hear about the challenges you’ve had, but you’re so talented and creative, that I’m confident you’ll continue to find a course with success. BTW, I hope one day you have a paint getaway here in the US. I’d love to attend.
Ai steals, so do original artist. Think artist back then stole ideas and even traced. I do miss craft fairs though, every craft fair my family went to had mass produced stuff and sometimes people selling same stuff. Don't think people want to put in the work anymore on crafts. Seen people even selling crafts they made far below the value as they are new and didn't know what to charge.
Thank you so much for your transparency about Etsy. That's really cool about your art in the Ryan Gosling movie! Love your art and your Watercolor Mastery Class!
I’ve noticed the change in Etsy as well, in particular leaning toward AI even when my search specifies handmade. Very enlightening information! I’m a Watercolor Mastery member and am very glad that you are continuing to teach! I will probably never sell anything, I don’t know that I have a desire to, but I enjoy creating for my sled and friends and family. Thanks for taking me on the wonderful watercolor journey!
I'm so glad you are still focused on your watercolor mastery course, I joined this January and I am LOVING it.. your video inspires me to keep moving toward my dreams. Congratulations on the film! Thank you for sharing your honest experiences.
I've found Etsy frustrating to purchase on because all the listings seem to be corporations or the same products from "different" sellers. I've purchased a lot of art from artists directly and your advise is spot on. There's also something nice about buying art from someone you can connect with or have a story behind rather than on the art version of Amazon. Also there are more and more technical tools that support shops on websites at a low cost - especially on wordpress.
I have struggled with this very thing. I am grateful to know I'm not the only one, and love your ideas for alternatives as I have also thought about some of those as well. Thanks for sharing, it's very helpful!
Thank you for you honest video about your Etsy sales and the way Etsy does appear to be going downhill and less in favour for the small busineses such as tthe one's we have. Like you we've had an Etsy shop for many years with over 5.800 sales to date, but again like your lovely self sales have gradually dropped over the past couple of years. No matter how we spruce up the listings, new descriptions, titles, photographs and so on, it's never made a difference. Where we will be in say one years time I don't know, the odd sale is better than non as long as it more than covers the listing fees and the artwork sold, so maybe the prices of our wares need to go up to compensate? Keep doing what you are doing here, I personally love your work. Paul 🎨
Thanks for sharing, Paul! I appreciate hearing a little of your story. I agree-I plan on keeping up my most popular listings for now, at least until I have a better online store created.
I'm so sorry to hear this Emily. Your work is so good. I've been on Etsy since 2011 in the nursery art genre too and haven't seen the same decline. I really don't listen to all of the negativity and just focus on my own shop. I've got a website and it's so much harder to get customers to it! My ad spend goes much farther on Etsy. I wish you the best with watercolor school.
I'll add that Etsy added mandatory Google Ads for sellers with sales over a certain dollar amount. That means that our top selling item comes with a nearly 25% fee from Etsy & ads! Insane. We are at the tail end of our working years so will continue with Etsy just a year or two more. Good for you on moving on from them.
Good decision, did the same a couple of years ago because the writing was definitely on the wall -- one can hope something else may emerge but, as you said, we need to find ways to remain in control of what we are making. I'm focusing on in person sales/shows, I don't do social media so that's the best option for me -- it's a shame but, as you said, we know enough not to 'fund' what Etsy has become with our creative energies. Best wishes in your new endeavors.
I read something the other day that said AI will be the last thing a human has created. It's kind of scary if you think about it - you don't know what is real or not anymore. I'm sorry for you Emily and I will of course continue to follow you and your gorgeous work. The true artists will always have a place in this world.
I also left Etsy! I started my hand stamped jewelry shop after getting laid off from my job because i was "more focused on being a mom" in 2015. I had a $45k year my first few years, and then came China. My original jewelry designs were copied and mass produced, and you can still buy them on AliExpress, amazon, etc. I also had to have a few awkward talks with people who were reselling, and also people just flat out copying (bound to happen, unfortunately). Etsy support never helped. Last year, i was getting like one sale a month 😂 everyone bought laser engravers, so no one wants the "imperfect" hand stamping that costs more. I couldn't compete, and it was exhausting trying to. I'm also sad about what the website has turned into. It used to be wonderful. Heres to new beginnings that we can feel at peace with! 🎉 and having our freedom in our art!
Hate to see you leave Etsy but glad you're still here! Hoping you will consider a non-Meta social media platform in the future for those of us that have had enough.
Oh wow! Thanks for the info. Timely for us too as we're contemplating doing some things on Etsy. Maybe not now though. As you say, website selling is an option. If you have other suggestions you think would work please let us know.
I'm a member of Mastery and love all your tutorials. So sorry you had to go through all that but I'm really, really glad that you are continuing with Mastery. I was scared for a moment that you were closing that down as well. I see so many AI generated paintings and it makes me sad that this is happening. I only started my watercolor journey just over a year ago and I do it for fun not for income but it still makes me mad that people steal and lie about other artists amazing talent. Keep your chin up. We are here for you, Denise
Not only are you talented and well organized you are an excellent communicator who speaks from the heart. Your genuineness will take you far 🙏🏼I wish you the very best Emily.
I have watched this change in Etsy with sadness. Etsy is now Temu-like. It used to be such a unique wonderful place to buy handmade items and original artwork at a fare price. I'm glad you made a little money for your hardwork doing what you love but I applaud you effect to leave Esty behind. They had something special and fun and threw it all away for bigger profits.
I’m sorry to hear you’re stepping away from Etsy. As an artist with an Etsy shop, I wanted to share my experience. Etsy still works for me, bringing in $40K-$50K annually. While I started a Shopify shop in 2020, it’s been tough to succeed there without paid ads. I also had issues with digital art being copied on platforms like Amazon, Alibaba and Temu, which was frustrating. Since 2022, I’ve focused on hand-painted wine glasses, mugs, and stones-unique, giftable items that are harder for copycats to replicate. This shift aligns with Etsy’s push for giftable products and has helped me keep going. There are still people who value original art, even as Etsy changes. Please don’t give up-it’s still a marketplace that can work for artists like us.
So glad it has been profitable for you! I agree, Etsy is still the best place for handmade earthenware or handpainted dishes--one of my favorite mugs is from a pottery shop on Etsy. For watercolor artists, however, AI prints are completely taking over. I definitely won't stop BUYING handmade! :)
My friend used to sell vintage items on Etsy but, for most of the reasons you describe, she left. Too bad. It sounds like it was good in the beginning but not anymore. I try to buy directly from producers. Last year I bought a lovely embroidery kit from Heidi Boyd directly from her website.
Thanks so much for sharing your experience. There is a wonderful art community out there - supportive and generous and you are the ambassador. Thank you for your lessons and thank for Watercolor Mastery.
Good for you Emily! Your art is absolutely fabulous and I can tell that you have a wonderful soul. I’ve loved watching your TH-cam tutorials and have learned so much from you. I wish you well and support your decision ❤
With so many of these tech firms starting out by almost giving away their services and then slowly raising their prices its such a predictable pattern of behavior that I made up the saying: "Beware of Geeks bearing gifts." Thanks so much for your seasoned pro advice - I will never go onto Etsy now. It sounds like its so much more of a hassle than its worth. Your Art is awesome!
Thank you for this balanced and thoughtful explanation. It’s so frustrating that the company seems to have lost its moral compass. It should be a safe place for makers. I think there must surely be a platform that will replace Etsy. Good luck with your work and i wish you great success, you deserve it.
Yes it is. Over the years I have purchased wonderful things but it is getting harder and harder to find things I want. Also, many of the sellers I want to purchase from again are no longer there.😢
Thank you for sharing I watched cause I was worried your teaching would go away I chose your program because your work is realistic and that is what motivates me to paint Just wanted to say thank you and to let you know your teaching is appreciated
Wow! So informative! Thanks for sharing. I just opened an Etsy shop 2 months ago, lol. I sold out of my first listings in about an hour (probably due to social media “launch” promotions beforehand). Having no knowledge of anything Etsy except for the social media complaints about Etsy allowing the sales of explicit and satanic items, I needed a quick and easy way to sell to people requesting that I make my art available for purchase and Etsy was quick. Please let us know if you hear of any other worthwhile selling platforms in the future. Best wishes on your future endeavors, Emily! I, too, am loving Watercolor Mastery.
I absolutely agree with everything you've said! I'm shutting my doors too 😢 I've been on there with 2 shops for so long but it's changed so much and financially not worth it. Well said and I've no doubt it's the right choice ❤
Not to mention their seller support is NONEXISTANT. It is impossible to get ahold of any kind of customer support for anything and email tickets go unanswered for weeks if they EVER get answered.
Thank you! This was so helpful and timely! I started an Etsy shop a couple of years ago to sell sublimation mugs I designed and printed, investing in an expensive sublimation printer and mugs. I’ve sold 1 on Etsy! (I know, I know, definitely an over saturated market … but thought my originality might be a winner!) I’ve been able to sell on Facebook and make gifts, but I’m pretty sure Etsy wants me to pay for advertising to even get any attention. Just this weekend I deleted all my postings while am trying to decide what to do next. The reason I found your channel is because I’m returning to my watercolor and growing my skills, and also creating handmade pottery. I’m considering ways to sell locally with art that’s regional to my area. I was considering if my watercolor might have more of an opportunity on Etsy. I was skeptical. You convinced me, for now, to put energy into other avenues! Thank you!
I bought some handmade watercolor paints on etsy. I never made a formal account. When I went to purchase more, as soon as I entered my email address, my credit card number showed up. Etsy had "saved" it. I got a new credit card number and never purchased another thing from etsy.
It is happening to artists platforms and shops across the board. The suits are buying them up and trashing them. Seems this is deeper than just the "tech bros".
I was only a buyer, working towards becoming a seller someday, when Etsy suspended my account with no explanation or way to communicate with them. I did nothing wrong, only spent my hard earned dollars on tools and art supplies. I was so confused and frustrated but in the end counted my blessings that I hadn't invested my time into building a store & customer base only to have the door slammed in my face. Etsy is a horrible company with terrible business practices. Good you're getting away from it and distancing yourself. Best wishes and best of luck to you. Your work is Beautiful!
@@EmilyOlsonArt Thank you. I feel so sorry for you too and what you've had to deal with. I called a jeweler in San Francisco recently because I saw thiefs had stolen & replicated his designs on Ali baba. He said it happens all the time and was so difficult to put a stop to. All good thoughts coming your way. ♡
Thank you for sharing your decision, it really helps a lot. I just started selling paintings and handmade cards and really thought about starting an Etsy account. Thanks to you I won't and better look for something else 😊.
Thanks for sharing. I had an Etsy shop for a year or so several years ago, sold mug rugs, nothing sold. So I quit Etsy. If I would put things up to sell I would create my own website, and put low resolution pictures of the items on it. I have seen Etsy have non hand made goods being sold, and that is a reason I also quit. They changed and allowed commercially made things, as well as a price hike and made it mandatory for free shipping, I think. I know others that have quit and started their own websites, and some have both. I have a local gallery that I have put my abstract art in, and have sold one piece. So look into local gallery's, coffee shops, art walks, and such.
Thank you for this, I was planning to start an Etsy shop to sell watercolour cards for birthdays and Christmas. I now realise that it isn’t going to work for me xxxxx
Early on, I did buy some things from Etsy. But then things changed and I really couldn’t find those small business artists anymore. It kept directing me to areas where I thought the person was mass producing things and I was not happy. So I’m trying to buy locally when I see people having an art show at a flea market or something like that where you can actually meet the person and watch them painting. Years ago I had a little table at a Grange fair for a couple of years and I sold Little 3 x 5 cards. Each one was hand painted. I didn’t really make much money. And I’m not looking for that to be my business, but I will always support artists and try to buy directly from them. . Good luck with your next adventure I can’t wait to see where you go from here.
It’s been ridiculous. I have been thinking of closing my tiny Etsy shop. It’s far too much, time, energy… Sadly, this is a common story these days. You’re on the right track, sell DIRECTLY to your super fans 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 6:45 hahaha, there’s never been an “easy button” for artists to make a living from their work. I’ve been doing watercolor and pen and ink for more than 30 years, read: pre-internet. It’s better now than ever, but it has to be direct, the middleman ALWAYS gets greedy, no matter how well intentioned they start.
I am so much supporting you in this matter with Etsy. Thanks to you, I understand a lot more about how Etsy works. You are a wonderful example of starting a successful small business. Unfortunately Etsy has begun to take more money from their small businesses. So, so sad!!! I love your business, and want to continue to follow you. Keep me posted
I have noticed Etsy was listing more items that looked more like mass produced stuff. It was actually hard to find what I was looking for because of the volume. I started going directly to maker’s websites. I would rather pay shipping and help small businesses out. I’m sure I’m not the only one that feels that way. Thanks for explaining what was going on. I am sure your shop will be a success. And thanks for the daily painting tutorials and other helpful videos you do. I’m learning so much!😊
This was an amazing post Emily and I’m so glad you put this out there. I wouldn’t have known any of this about Etsy otherwise. I’ve hesitated to go on Etsy for a number of reasons, and you’ve just confirmed that I’ve made the right call. I’d really like to start my own website, but have no clue how to do it. I know there are apps out there for people like me to get started (WIX, etc) but I’m intimidated. So here I sit, with piles of really nice paintings, selling only locally once in a while. It’s frustrating. I love to paint watercolors, I’m quite good, so I just keep painting because it gives me so much pleasure. My life is enriched by it. Any thoughts will be helpful. Thank you again.
So sorry to hear about the fundamental changes at ETSY. The impact of AI art is frightening for original creators such as yourself. Best wishes for success. Your gifts as an educator and patience with beginners are appreciated!
Thanks for sharing. It's too bad Etsy changed and not in a good way. As an artist and a customer, I have been disheartened that most of their products are not handmade and are from overseas. I want to support local artists !
I was about to open a store on Etsy, but seeing the future that was approaching and that for artists it would be unpromising, I backed out... Etsy in the end will be a bazaar of everything for 1 dollar. they will know... Thank youuuu!!!
Emily, thank you so much for speaking up the way you did. You are brave. So few out there have the courage to speak up about core values of honesty, ethical behavior, respect of others and self, cooperation and unity. Bravo.
I appreciate the sincerity of your message and you taking the time to explain yourself. I’m so glad you will continue with Watercolour Mastery. You are a terrific teacher who breaks steps down into manageable and understandable sections. Hopefully more people will join your membership and you won’t miss Etsy. Other artists I follow sell on their channel so maybe that will work for you. ❤
You are spot on. I have original oil paintings and sales have dropped to almost nothing for most of the reasons you have outlined. Etsy has really been a disappointment. Good luck with your future endeavors. 😊
Thanks so much for this information….. good to know all this so I don’t get tangled up in it as I stretch my wings! 🤪 You are an inspiration to me, and just the sweetest person! I have loved taking your watercolor mastery course over the past three years, and learning from you!❤️
I couldn’t wait to get home and watch this. I totally agree with everything you said. During Covid everyone was at home and looking for a way to make more money. I think the market really got over saturated with digital products. This is my question. What about original art? My husband joined the laser printing community and a lot of them have great results (or at lest they say they do) on Etsy. I wondered if that was because it is something that cannot be “stolen”. I wondered about selling art that is hand made and original. No prints, no digital files. Thoughts?
@ thank you for your reply. The more I was thinking about this evening the cost of putting items on Etsy (.20 per listing) probably would almost equal the amount of having a website. I haven’t done much on Etsy. I know how to post an item and have a shop. I follow groups that feel the same way you do. It makes me really sad they changed their values and moved away from “handmade” and raised prices. I have done Shopify and it was good, but moved to Wix and wow! 🤩 I created a website for a non profit with blogs in two days, working on it in the evenings.
Go you. I love your lessons, am delighted to pay for them while using them, and think this is a wonderful way for your talent to help you earn - sharing your fantastic skills. All the best, thanks for what you do.
Thank you for sharing your experinces with Etsy! This video came at a great time because one of my goals for the new year was to finally set up my own Etsy shop. Thanks for saving me the disappointment! I think it's a shame that AI has to take over the art market and that handmade products aren't valued as much anymore.
I appreciate your honesty & values. And sticking to it! It's a shame to see Etsy get away from what was once a good motive. Artists should not lower their own value. "Be true to thine self" Keep up your excellent work!
Good luck, this stuff is tough. I've occasionally watched or recommended your TH-cam videos in the past, and just saw your presentations during Water Color Live 2025. You are the bomb1
AI created art should have never been allowed on a site that is supposed to be handmade items.
100% this!
What excellent advice. I am now retired but I successfully sold my art from 1988 to retirement in 2021. Your advice to “take control of your own sales” is exactly what I did. Thanks for chiming in with a wonderful success story! 🎉
That was truly brilliant strategy.

@AbbyFitz my sister started an Etsy shop back in 2020 and she has over 400. I just started this year :(
My timing was just as bad. I wanted to create merchandise to complement my books, and MAN did I choose the wrong time to start doing that.
Wow I wish I could have snagged one of those necklaces! How beautifully unique!
I walked.
I can't believe they did that! 🤯
I left years ago when they told us to lie to our customers and offer free shipping and raise our prices to cover it!!! Plus more!!! When they went on the New York Stock Exchange is when everything changed and went down!!!!!
Yes, the pressure to make everything free shipping eats into the makers’ profits while further enriching the company.
Yep and the pressure to GIVE DISCOUNTS to liked items, items in cart, etc. Eats away at profits.
Diane thanks for watching and for your thoughtful comment! It’s a tough market out there for artists selling real art! Best of luck to you!
As a consumer, I've recently found Etsy to be less inviting, less user friendly, and leaning more toward the Amazon model. Now I know why. Thank you for your insight! (Also, thank you for all the tips and training you provide through your videos. I often take notes and return to watch again!)
So glad this was helpful!
They really really were 😢
Thanks for the comment! Yes-we need to find a space that is pro-artist!
I had the same experience and also began my shop in 2009!!! I closed it by Dec 31 2024
Omg congratulations on having your artwork in a film 🥹💗 That’s so exciting! I love your watercolor mastery course. You are so inspiring!
It's like a little award, something you can tell your Grandchildren. Awesome
Thank you, Emmy!
@@EmilyOlsonArtyou’re so welcome 😊💗
I have had an Etsy shop for several years and have been thinking of cancelling it and concentrating only on my website. It is so hard to sell original art for the price it is worth on Etsy because many artist, like you say devalue their art. I have sold several originals over the years, but the price to keep my shop going and all my art active adds up to not much profit. So I think I will make the brake also.
It sounds like you know your worth! We're all in this together!
I was a member of your mastery class for a year and really enjoyed it. I just got back from an 8 month tour of the country and sketched along the way and you helped me by encouraging my drawing skills. When I get back into my studio I will be able to have a wealth of ideas to paint. Thank you Emily
Awesome! 👏
Good for you, Emily! Thanks for sharing your decision. Artists need to stand up for themselves. I'm really enjoying seeing who buys my paintings by selling at local venues. While a few have found their way out of state, most grace the homes of folks near me. Since they feel like my children, this makes me happy!
Yes, it is so lovely when you can establish a relationship with your collector!
✨🕊️💚☘️💚🕊️✨
I know exactly what you mean--it's a hard pill to swallow!
Good for you Emily! I've been on Etsy for several years and guess how many paintings I've sold? You guessed it. ONE! I think I'll follow your lead and drop my account as well. Thanks for the heads up!
Good for you. To have your art stolen has to be hearttbreaking. I wish you every success!!
Thank you, Sherry!
I’ve heard many artists say they’ve experienced similar negative experiences with Etsy.
Agree! It’s not a place that serves artisans anymore.
Same, I had 3 great years 2019-2022 for my custom art 25-60k a year to a point I was considering to quit my day job. In some point 2023 they flagged my shop, hold 75% of my income which was almost 2k a month because I was considered “high risk” not having fast
shipping. My work takes 3-4 months to finish and every customer knows about it.
At this point I only accept deposit listing on Etsy and direct them to my own website.
Wow, I'm so sorry that happened to you! And Etsy's customer support is terrible. Way to take control of your own sales!
Thank you so much for this tutorial. It was very clear to me not to start this route. I wish you all the best!
You're welcome! Glad I could help!
I’m so sorry to hear about the changes. That doesn’t speak much to those who are beginning hopefuls. Thanks you for the website recommendation. I am one of your watercolor mastery students and appreciate you so much!
I'm so happy to hear you are enjoying WM!
@ absolutely 💯
so sad Emily but thanks for this heartfelt video. Its heart-breaking that people who put a lot of heart and soul into their own products get ripped off. Good luck to you and keep creating, youre so amazing at it !
Thank you, Teresa!
I’m not surprised by the way etsy has gone, it’s unfortunate but I’ve been noticing these issues for years as well as a buyer.
That clip of your paintings in that show/ movie was so cool! I’d be super excited too! Adorable how your hubby was so proud ❤
Aw thank yoU!
I’ve found people on Etsy copying photos of others’ original 2D art and selling them as downloadable digital prints in large collections.
That is absolutely infuriating!
You're such a gorgeous person inside and out. I truly appreciate all your painting lessons.❤
You're so kind, thank you!
Thank you so much for your transparency about Etsy. That's really cool about your art in the Ryan Gosling movie! Love your art and your Watercolor Mastery Class!
Thank you for watching and for the nice comment!
It's so rewarding to create for ourselves and loved ones, isn't it?
I'm so glad you are still focused on your watercolor mastery course, I joined this January and I am LOVING it.. your video inspires me to keep moving toward my dreams. Congratulations on the film! Thank you for sharing your honest experiences.
So glad you are enjoying the instruction! I have poured my heart and soul into it. :)
Very enlightening w/ thoughtful honesty and tips so bliss ya for this vid!
I appreciate it! Glad the video was helpful!
It’s so nice when you can know your collectors!
I left after 7 years too in 2021. I am sooooo over their absolute bullshit.
I have struggled with this very thing. I am grateful to know I'm not the only one, and love your ideas for alternatives as I have also thought about some of those as well. Thanks for sharing, it's very helpful!
Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for sharing and being so open about this!
Of course!!
I appreciate you sharing your experience--it’s good to hear different perspectives!
Yes, their "offsite ads" add additional fees that they don't even tell you about. Crazy.
I guess that’s their form of a tariff.
I agree, it's all about finding what works best for us!
It sounds like you really had a great run, but you're right to focus on what brings you joy!
Hate to see you leave Etsy but glad you're still here! Hoping you will consider a non-Meta social media platform in the future for those of us that have had enough.
Wow seeing your artwork at that movie must be one of the best feelings in the world! How exciting!
It was very exciting!
Oh wow! Thanks for the info. Timely for us too as we're contemplating doing some things on Etsy. Maybe not now though. As you say, website selling is an option. If you have other suggestions you think would work please let us know.
I'm so glad I could help! I'm thinking about making a separate video about some of the other options I'm exploring.
@ would love to hear your thoughts!
Thanks so much for your support, Denise!
Not only are you talented and well organized you are an excellent communicator who speaks from the heart. Your genuineness will take you far 🙏🏼I wish you the very best Emily.
Thank you so very much!
Well said Emily! Thank you for your kind and caring way of explaining the changes you need to make. I'm very proud of you!
Thank you!
I completely agree! It's a real shame to see the change.
Thank you so much for this info. It's definitely given me something to think about!!!
It's my pleasure!
Good for you Emily! Your art is absolutely fabulous and I can tell that you have a wonderful soul. I’ve loved watching your TH-cam tutorials and have learned so much from you. I wish you well and support your decision ❤
Thanks so much, I appreciate that!
Thank you so much for the kind words!
Thank you for this balanced and thoughtful explanation. It’s so frustrating that the company seems to have lost its moral compass. It should be a safe place for makers. I think there must surely be a platform that will replace Etsy. Good luck with your work and i wish you great success, you deserve it.
Thank you for the nice comment!
As an Etsy customer I am so disheartened. Just as you have mentioned - too much AI and crap from China!
It's sad to see Etsy go in this direction, isn't it?
Yes it is. Over the years I have purchased wonderful things but it is getting harder and harder to find things I want. Also, many of the sellers I want to purchase from again are no longer there.😢
Thank you for sharing
I watched cause I was worried your teaching would go away
I chose your program because your work is realistic and that is what motivates me to paint
Just wanted to say thank you and to let you know your teaching is appreciated
That's so kind of you to say. I'm happy to help!
Glad to hear your sales have been strong! Sounds like your social media launch made all the difference. Thanks for the nice comment!
Well done Emily. ❤❤
I absolutely agree with everything you've said! I'm shutting my doors too 😢 I've been on there with 2 shops for so long but it's changed so much and financially not worth it. Well said and I've no doubt it's the right choice ❤
I’m sorry it’s been a fruitless endeavor for you, too! Cheers to finding something that works for artists!
Not to mention their seller support is NONEXISTANT. It is impossible to get ahold of any kind of customer support for anything and email tickets go unanswered for weeks if they EVER get answered.
Yes, abysmal “seller support”.
Thank you!
It sounds like you're already on the right track - working on your craft and looking for new ways to sell!
I bought some handmade watercolor paints on etsy. I never made a formal account. When I went to purchase more, as soon as I entered my email address, my credit card number showed up. Etsy had "saved" it. I got a new credit card number and never purchased another thing from etsy.
Thank you for sharing your experience
I’m so sorry that happened to you! 😢
Thank you Emily for sharing ,your artwork is beautiful!
Thanks so much, I appreciate it!
Thank you for sharing your decision, it really helps a lot. I just started selling paintings and handmade cards and really thought about starting an Etsy account. Thanks to you I won't and better look for something else 😊.
Happy to help!
It's sad that Etsy has changed, but it’s great that you found a way to adapt!
I'm sorry Emily. Wishing you much success once you start selling your art on your website. Thank you for sharing your story.
Thank you for the support, I appreciate it!
Big thumbs up to handmade! Especially yours Emily!!!
Thank you, Janet!
Thanks for the thoughtful comment!
good move! thank you for sharing with us why you made this decision. Greatly appreciated
Thanks so much for watching!
It’s been ridiculous. I have been thinking of closing my tiny Etsy shop. It’s far too much, time, energy…
Sadly, this is a common story these days.
You’re on the right track, sell DIRECTLY to your super fans 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
6:45 hahaha, there’s never been an “easy button” for artists to make a living from their work.
Thank you so much for your kind support!
I’m learning so much!😊
Thanks for watching my videos!
It’s really difficult to find authentic handmade things on Etsy anymore. I left a long time ago and rarely purchase there anymore. It’s really sad.
It's a real shame to see the platform change so much, isn't it?
@ something happened when they got bought out. Then it became all about making money and not serving the creators anymore.
It can be intimidating to start out, but you can do it!
So sorry to hear about the fundamental changes at ETSY. The impact of AI art is frightening for original creators such as yourself. Best wishes for success. Your gifts as an educator and patience with beginners are appreciated!
Thanks for the kind comment!
Great advice and super glad you have another avenue available for your work ❤🎉
I appreciate that!
Great advice 😊
I’m glad you found it helpful!
Sorry to hear this, but also glad you are taking control of your sales.
Thank you! Yes--important to be in control of your own art!
Thanks for sharing. It's too bad Etsy changed and not in a good way. As an artist and a customer, I have been disheartened that most of their products are not handmade and are from overseas. I want to support local artists !
I completely agree! It’s a real shame to see the change.
Bravo.
Thank you! I 100% support REAL art!
Thanks, that means a lot!
You are spot on. I have original oil paintings and sales have dropped to almost nothing for most of the reasons you have outlined. Etsy has really been a disappointment. Good luck with your future endeavors. 😊
Thanks for the support!
Thanks so much for this information….. good to know all this so I don’t get tangled up in it as I stretch my wings! 🤪 You are an inspiration to me, and just the sweetest person! I have loved taking your watercolor mastery course over the past three years, and learning from you!❤️
That means so much to me! Thank you!!
Thoughts?
I think there's definitely still a market for hand-made originals!
Way to stay true to your values Emily, much respect! I look forward to your art being for sale on your website! 🙂
Thank you for the support - I appreciate it!
Excellent! You are making the right decision
Thank you, Marion!
Go you. I love your lessons, am delighted to pay for them while using them, and think this is a wonderful way for your talent to help you earn - sharing your fantastic skills. All the best, thanks for what you do.
Thanks so much for the supportive comment!
Thank you for sharing your experinces with Etsy! This video came at a great time because one of my goals for the new year was to finally set up my own Etsy shop. Thanks for saving me the disappointment! I think it's a shame that AI has to take over the art market and that handmade products aren't valued as much anymore.
I'm so glad you decided to check out the video!
I appreciate your honesty & values. And sticking to it! It's a shame to see Etsy get away from what was once a good motive. Artists should not lower their own value. "Be true to thine self" Keep up your excellent work!
I completely agree with you. Thanks for the support!
You go girl!
Good luck, this stuff is tough. I've occasionally watched or recommended your TH-cam videos in the past, and just saw your presentations during Water Color Live 2025. You are the bomb1
