The Korean kings who lived in Gyeongbokgung were always under pressure to study and work hard for the people. The Korean Kings got up 5:00 AM and must attend academic seminars twice every day. Before becoming King, prince was forced to study very hard and if can't pass the academic test, he was punished by King. The stress for study is so heavy that some of princes went mad. Anyway the Korean Kings were forced to become "Philosopher King" described in 'Republic' written by Plato, a Greek Philosopher.
the door plate character on the entrance wall means: once you enter you will become poor. The first character means "nothing left", second character means "become", third character means "door", not sure this is correct or not, i just take my asian study this semester.
Good question! My understanding is that Korea, like Japan, originally used Chinese characters to write their words - they invented their own writing system called "Hangul" in 1443, and the palace was originally built in 1395

Why is the entrance to the palace written in Chinese?
