    When I was a kid, it was a big mystery in my household as to what the name was that Bastian screams out the window. I'm hard of hearing and when I was about 10 years old, got a closed captioning box to hook up to our tv (televisions in the early 90s didn't have captioning yet and a separate device was needed) and I was so excited that the captioner would be able to tell me. Got to that scene and I was rewarded with [unintelligible scream]. It wasn't until many years later where I decided to look it up in Wikipedia and found out it's "Moonchild" and I was profoundly disappointed.

      I know. It's so stupid. The obvious choice should have been his mother's name. Back at the beginning of the Fantasia stuff when Bastion looks up from the book and says, "It's too bad they don't ask me. I know the perfect name.", I was like, "Sweet. It's going to be his mother's name." And then at the end he just yells some dumbass fanfic name. Missed opportunity.

      My family did the same thing--we had a native Great Grandmother somewhere. I haven't done a DNA test, but I have traced the genealogy back 9 generations. There's not a single native American. There's Canadian, British, Welsh, Irish, & (WTF) Finnish!
      So, where did my sister's dark skin come from?? She looks exactly like my dad. There's no chance for any Hanky Panky.

    Fun Fact: The Author of the book is called Michael Ende, Ende is the german word for the end.

  • @KathyClysm

    • @swanpride
      @swanpride 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I also recommend watching the Movie based on the book. Unlike Neverending Story it actually got the approval of Ende, and it does a way better job adapting the story and its meaning. Especially the scene with the dolls and the design of the grey men is excellent.

    Whut? You don't have seen any German movies?????
    Here is a list of the absolute MUST SEE:
    Das Kabinett des Dr. Caligari (1921)
    Nosferatu (1922)
    Tartüff (1926)
    Die Abenteur des Princen Achmed (The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926) - Oldest surviving animated movie, and yes, it predates Snow White, and yes, Walt Disney for sure know this movie)
    Metropolis (1927) (Honestly, everything by Fritz Lang is worth a watch, but this one and "M" (1932) are easily the most important).
    Berlin - Alexanderplatz (1931 or the version from 1980)
    Das Mädchen Rosemarie (1958)
    Die Brücke (1959)
    Angst essen Seele auf (1974)
    Jakob der Lügner (1975)
    Das Boot (1979) (Honestly, you have never seen Das Boot? It was a huge deal....)
    Die Blechtrommel (1978)
    Der Himmel über Berlin (1986)
    Lola Rennt (1997) Or you might no it as Run, Lola, Run
    Good Bye Lenin (2001)
    Pina (2009)
    Personally I would also add "In den Gängen", "Das Wunder von Bern", "Er ist wieder da". "Smog", "Das Millionenspiel", "Brecht's Dreigroschenfilm"...though the latter one is very heady.

    Oh, and the film actually only covers the first half of the book (the book is 26 chapters and a prologue, the film wraps it up around chapter 13 or 14), so there's a whole other plot in the second half of the book which chronicles Bastian's adventures in rebuilding Fantasia and then becoming so power-hungry he turns on his friends (the idea od him losing a memory every time he makes a wish from the second film is from this half of the book)...

    • @swanpride
      @swanpride 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honestly, I would cut the book in three parts...first part being the one which (mostly) made it into the movie which covers Atreyu's journey, ending with him coming back to the empress thinking that he has failed, the second part which covers the empress convincing Bastian to finally say her name and the Bastian creating his own version of Fantasia up to him becoming powerhungry, and the last part, when Bastian has "fallen from grace" so to speak and is looking for a way home. And the third part might actually be the best one, despite being the most bleak.

    German here: Most (good) German movies are more like dialogue-heavy dramas in our day and age. (Even if we had ouf fair share of crappy Comedys). Not a lot of on-Set drama and injured actors. On the other hand, some 80s German moviemakers had kind of a rep for making weird stuff and also bringing actors to their limits.And just a sidefact: This movie and especiallly the Book is still kind of a big deal over here in Germany. There is even a NeverEnding Story Studio Tour in Munich.

    • @swanpride
      @swanpride 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honestly, I don't think that you can put the German movie into a box....there are some Genres which can be clearly defined, like the "Heimatfilm", the typical German School movie (which is different from the typical american school movie in that it tends to focus more on the relationship between pupils and teachers than on the relationships of pupils with each other), German expressionism, the whole sexploitation genre, a huge chunk of movies based on children literature....it is true, though, that there is a chunk of movies which focus on German history and the German Zeitgeist and yes, they tend to be more on the explotation side.

    Artax wasn't hurt in that scene, but it almost killed Atreyu. He got pulled under the water in that scene, had the horse fall on him in another, which is where he broke his back, and cracked ribs when the Gmork pounced him. It was rough.
    Also, Milo and Otis allegations were never proven, and were happened because people seeing the movie feared what they were seeing couldn't have been done humanely. Of course, we'll never know for sure, but I'm going to choose to believe those little guys were ok.
    Regardless, that's not where the "No animals were harmed" thing came from. That was already in place, and was included in the credits for Milo and Otis.
