- A break in the cold snowy weather provided an overnight opportunity to get out into the woods and try outt some new knick knacks I’ve acquired.
*I buy all gear with my own money and have no affiliation with the companies I review other than being a fan.

Glad to see you back! Thanks for the knick-knack review.
Nana Wren thank you!
Missed you. Glad your back!
Chris Hopper thanks Chris! I appreciate that!
Tom, I ooohed and ahhed this entire video. Especially love the jungle blanket and the new stove. Love those capillary style stoves. I did laugh at that toothbrush. I thought the zpacks or chopping your own tooth brush might be too much. And yes, that breakfast hash is the bomb! 🙌🙌 Argh, work getting in the way of hiking is such a tragedy. I know it. 😀
Hi Tim! I was pleasantly surprised at how awesome the mini toothbrush and toothpaste tabs were. They are definitely a permanent part of my kit. And yes...work. One day I’ll win the lottery. Lol
Appreciate the reviews of your new gear & look forward to future vids.
Oscar Huynh thank you for watching. My annual favorite things from the year before should be up in a few days.
Gear talk is never NERDY...havent been to that shelter ever..looks nice...i was at pochuck shelter this past Saturday night..great vid dude..
brett hikez there are some really nicely maintained shelters south of Duncannon in PA. It’s one of my favorite stretches along the trail- easy grade and nice shelters. Thanks for watching!
Tom Willard ill be down there this summer to finish up PA cant wait
Always good to hear from you, Tom. Happy 2018.
Chris Myers thanks Chris!
Great video Tom
Chuck Wolf thanks for watching Chuck!
New sub. I really like your backpack
Jason Waugh thank you. Much appreciated!
Have been following your channel for a little while. Appreciate the thoughtfulness of your reviews. Looking forward to your favorite gear of 2017. Sub'd!
Great video! I loved the toothbrush. Im getting it for a friend. Also, great to be an example of getting good hikes in that aren't 100+ miles. I definitely need to focus on getting out into nature and outside of the city - 5 miles or 500.
Charlie Hannigan shorter hikes can definitely be fun. Work schedule only allows mostly 1-2 night trips and on shorter hikes I tend to focus on quality and camp time than miles. All in all just being in the woods recharges my soul.
Tom Willard no kidding. Any advice for finding good places to camp that aren't Backcountry and aren't rv Parks? All I seem to be able to find are those.
Charlie Hannigan for me I just google overnight hikes and the area I want to be. REI also has one or two day trip books.
Tom Willard awesome. I just got those toothbrushes in from light smith. I also got their pillow. Thanks for mentioning them!
Charlie Hannigan let me know how the pillow works out. I’ve always been interested in how they work.
You make me want to go out gear shopping. lol. You know, I bet companies would love to send you stuff for review.
The Last Grownup in the Woods Thanks! I love my gear and try to show lesser known items. I don’t have the subscriber base to warrant gear companies contacting me which is ok. I do this for the love of it.
That doesn't mean you can't contact them. Smaller companies will often be happy for the publicity. They will often at least give a discount. Bigger companies have pro deal programs that they sometimes open to TH-camrs (typically 30-50% off). I'm smaller than you, and I've gotten some good deals on gear, and even some free stuff. Anyway, just some food for thought.
Hey Tom, good to hear from you! I've always enjoyed watching your videos. I love the nerdy stuff. Gear selection and choice is what makes back packing so much fun. Everyone needs to have a few pieces of nerdy gear. Happy 2018, and best wishes for a great new season of opportunity. Nerd on eh!!! 😁 Cheers, Lamplighter 2019 out! 😉
Thank you for watching and for the kind words!
I foresee you loving a hammock! I recently made the switch. It's been a stressful learning curve for me simply because I have a limited time frame to figure it out... but you could ease into it and enjoy the switch. Lots to learn and customize. ❤ love the video! Thank you
Amanda Bess thank you very much! May I ask what hammock you are using? I am looking hard at the Warbonnet Blackbird or the Dutchware Chameleon.
Tom Willard
I'm going with Hummingbird Hammocks for the actual hammock (their single+) and tree straps (with whoopies). They use button caribiners which save a lot of weight. You'll see what I mean when you visit their site
HummingbirdHammocks.com
I'm in the process of editing a video showcasing my hammock sleep system. Should be done by tomorrow
What made you go to a Zpacks pack over the six moon designs from one of your (much) older videos?
Joseph Pierro I apologize for the late reply. I didn’t see the notice. I really loved the SMD Fusion and found it to be a perfect pack with the exception of the hip belt interfering with my range of motion. For the 99.9999% of the people out there, this is not an issue. I have a childhood medical condition in my leg that affects the range of motion.
I went to the Zpacks for two reasons. The hipbelt was more comfortable and my pack weight is down to about 10-11lbs baseweight.
Interestingly though, I’ve heard SMD has some different belt designs and I may re-explore the Fusion again.
G’day mate, I saw a glimpse of your spoon / fork set up I have seen it before but don’t know the name .... what’s it called ?
Grant Heale it’s called the HumanGear GoBites Duo. You can get them on Amazon for about $8 (USD). If you go on my channel, look for a video called “favorite gear of 2016” and you’ll see my review of it. It’s a great piece of gear. Thanks for watching.
