  • At last, my kit is complete. I have been holding off because honestly, I had so many combinations of a kit I could've went with, all trail proven and worthy. My step-off day on Springer Mountain is May 14.

    That sawyer scoop tip is the reason why I keep watching these style of videos. Seems so much easier and convenient than those crushed up plastic cups. Can't believe I never thought of that!

      Thanks David, and I agree that is why I love gear videos as well. I came up with the sawyer bag method because I got tired of the jagged edges of the plastic bottle snagging on my outer pocket.

    Great gear review, you have a very light pack weight, nice. Picked up some neat tips like the cut off collapsible water bottle vs reg bottle, that's a great idea

    Enjoying the gear videos. Just came across your channel, so I'll be checking out the rest of the videos soon. And good call on the Rhinoshield for your phone. I researched a ton and absolutely love mine. Light and works well for protection.

    Very cool list. I remember 20 years ago when I carried a pack that weighed probably half of my body weight. Lol. Happy travels!

    Appreciate the video and your well thought out system. I've watched a million gear videos and so many people post videos of gear they have never used and saw in the back of Backpacker Magazine. One tip that you hit on that I haven't heard or seen before is the use of trekking pole tips. Damn, so simple and makes a ton of sense. Thanks again for the video and continue to enjoy your hike!

    Technology is amazing man. It's what made me pick CS as my major in college. A guy like this can take his iPhone, and use it to make TH-cam videos and grow a channel. And a guy like me can gather up all the information he has from HIS experience, and use it. Learning so incredibly easy today. Yet instead of being motivated in my studies I find myself feeling jaded. But instead of try and treat depression problems that sober me can't even solve, I'll keep smoking and writing these comments.

    Hey Tom, enjoyed your vids for some time now. Glad to hear you're going to get on the AT (18 years in the planning!) That's probablythe way my through attempt will go. Thanks for the inspiration, and can't wait to follow your journey!

      Hi Spencer. Enlightened Equipment quilts are another very popular quilt that aren't as tough on the wallet. I have owned several Enlightened Equipment quilts over the years and have always found them to be suitable and great. I will be doing videos weekly of my hike, so stay tuned!

    Great review Tom! You totally sold me on the "Bentley" of sleeping bags in the Katabatic Flex 30° just ordered one myself, can't wait to try it out on the trails. Stole a couple ideas, hope you don't mind. Cheers!

    Good review..I have not started backpacking yet but have taken time watching and reading, getting prepared..unfortunately when I started the preparation phase, I bought some gear in Amazon that are now past the return time and never used it; came to realize the itch for going light weight, now I am obsessed with buying the quality gears and I hit my limits and it will take time to get what I want lightweight to be ready; maybe like another year but so far I got Osprey packs, 48 exos and thinking to get the Atmos 65 AG; got the Big Agnes Coper Spur 2, Thermarest Neo Air Max, and just ordered the EE Revelation Quilt 20F, since I don't think this summer will see any trips..that with lots and lots of stuff that I realize will not use; some I could return and trade in some can't; it is very overwhelming the expenses but seems to be worthy once hitting the trail; I love the outdoors but also need it for health as well to go back to shape which I am working on diet and training with walking trying to shed pounds..30% BMI over so got the itch for the trail, just wonder how long before I can say ok , now I am ready to hit the trail !

    Interesting pack review. I agree with the comments that I think the UL movement is starting to go too far. The cost of always going the absolute lightest is ridiculously high and misses the fact that reducing what you take is the best way to reduce weight, not to take everything possible, justified by the UL label on each item. Hiking at its best is simple, elemental . . . while you commune with nature's beauty. Just my 2 cents.

    • @tomwillard7251
      @tomwillard7251  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +William Holder Thanks for watching! Yes, it is definitely possible. There are hikers every year thru hiking with a hammock. There's a current thru hiker with a youtube channel by the name of "Phollowing Phil" who is using a hammock.

    Looks like a good set-up. I'd love to see a full review of the Helios 55 sometime. There aren't any on TH-cam, as far as I can tell. I considered that pack but I was concerned about ventilation. (Hate a sweaty back.) How does it compare to your old Fusion 50 in that regard, overall comfort, and its ability to carry a load?

    • @tomwillard7251
      @tomwillard7251  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Joe Sugarman Hi Joe- I will definitely do a review. I bought this pack and and used it over the winter so I'll have to wait until the summer to do a full review on how the ventilation is. So far, I have not felt like it is bad at all. It does have ventilated backing. As far as carrying a load, I believe the Fusion will carry a 40lb load better but if you max out at 30lbs, I feel the Helios will feel more comfortable. Where the Helios excels is on the lower lumbar padding. It forms to your lower back better for weight transfer.

    I like the Esbit cubes but besides the smell the sticky residue left on the bottom of the pot is a deal breaker. I wish they could solve those to issues.

    It looks like you planned your hike from every possible angle! I am the same way. I have a question about your choice on using solid fuel tablets. How do you plan on resupply? It's my understanding it's not easy to find them. Are you depending on mail drops? I would prefer to use Esbit tabs myself! But I don't want to worry about finding fuel. Do you have a back up system? Your thoughts will be appreciated!!

    • @tomwillard7251
      @tomwillard7251  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dennis- I plan on doing mail drops by utilizing Amazon as well as places along the trail that have outdoor stores. If I need to, I will use a fire to boil water (if allowed at that area) or go cold food until I can get into town. The nice thing about the 4g tabs and realizing I don't need a rolling boil to cook is I can carry 10 days of tablets for about 3oz so it gives me plenty of time to plan ahead. Thanks for commenting!

    Ever thought about leaving stuff at home instead of bringing an ultralite version of everything but the kitchens sink?

    • @tomwillard7251
      @tomwillard7251  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you think this is everything but the kitchen sink, then I have to question how much backpacking you really do. I have used everything in my kit on my thru hike so far. Nothing has gone to waste, so I would actually say that I planned it perfectly.

    • @VaylorexTV
      @VaylorexTV 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tom Willard No it's fine... my comment was sounds very rude, to be honest :-D didn't think about that ^^
      I definetly will post my gearlist next year when I'm doing my thruhike... until then I can only provide you my camino gearlist - since I'm from europe and haven't done much hiking in the states so far ^^

    • @VaylorexTV
      @VaylorexTV 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tom Willard Basically what made me write my comment is that your pack is actually pretty big ( I know - weight is the enemy, not pack volume ) while I'm doing my treks with a 1900ci (32Liters) Backpack.
      And there are some of the super ultralite guys that go even smaller than that for a thruhike.
      I'm not sure how enjoyable that experience would be tho...
      However - it seems like you planned your stuff very well and I'm glad that your thru is going well so far :-)
      Didn't mean to be rude with my first comment ;)
