And I have lots of favorites all over the place, just Johnny Rivers tops them all. go see him live you will love him even more, He is the best live performer I have ever seen. I drove all day to see him in Houston, Tx then had to drive all night, to get to work on Monday morning, I'll do it again in a minute, Was a great show. go see him live you will see what I mean LOVE LOVE LOVE Johnny Rivers.
My first real chance to listen to music intensely was via a JR LP that my older brother left among others in ’69. It was Rewind. I could listen to all of those songs over and over and still can. What a soothing album. All fantastic stuff. I’ve been a confirmed JR fan ever since and have several of his albums. I think he also does my favorite version of Where Have All The Flowers Gone. I can’t pick any favorites, he has so many good songs. Fantastic inflections in his voice and he can really play guitar too. He has the respect and love of many fans, but like has been said he was somewhat underapreciated because his music was overshadowed by the newest things, The Beatles, etc. of the time. We all know better. Wouldn’t it be neat to be able to see him back in the Whiskey A Go Go days. We’re so glad to have him around still performing. To " Steve L. " Sir, I so agree. Marty Paich's gorgeous arrangement & production, make it even better than Glen's wonderful arrangement, by the great Al De Lory. --------------------------------WolfSky9
The two versions are not far enought apart. I would choose Campbell for the gorgeous quality of his voice. He was born to sing that song -- and I would say the sales speak for themselves. Not always, but here perhaps.
According to Wikipedia, this song was originally recorded by Johnny Rivers in 1965. I literally, 100% found out about this song tonight, at about 11pm, 9/9/16. I am 25 yrs old. It literally brought tears to my eyes when I heard it, absolute pure beauty. And the best part? There are several covers of it, each of which bring a different, unique spin to it. I could jump up and down over how excited I am that I just found out about this song. It is well older than me, but I am 25 and am now just hearing it. That in itself is pure art and beauty and what brings a smile to my day. Good, unheard, classic music is there to be found on the horizon my brothers and sisters. If you don't come to it, it will find its way to you, just as this particular song did for me. I had the pleasure of my mom telling me, "Her grandmother loved this song." Like, are you kidding me? Take a moment and allow that to resonate. You need a definition of "timeless"? Boom. There it is. Everyone and anyone should hear this song, period.
My friend, you need to check out Jimmy Webb, songwriter of By the Time I Get to Phoenix and a number of other great, timeless songs from the great American songbook. By the Time I Get to Phoenix was the first song on Johnny Rivers' "Changes" album, and it was the first album containing a Jimmy Webb song ever to crack the billboard charts (50th anniversary coming up on 12/17/2016.) But, no one remembers Johnny Rivers' version, because Glen Campbell made it a huge hit - the first huge hit for Campbell. The most recorded song of the 20th century, Wichita Lineman, was a followup Glen asked Jimmy Webb to write after the success of Phoenix. Just do a Google search for Jimmy Webb's songs and start YouTubing them - listen to them. Glen Campbell recorded lots of them, but there were others...heck, Josh Groban has recorded at least one or two, the Highwaymen (Nelson/Cash/Kristoferson/Jennings) recorded one, Sir Richard Harris...the list goes on. My kids (ages 5, 8, and 11) love so many Jimmy Webb tunes because I have sung them to them at bedtime. Beautiful stuff.
My favorite rendition of this beautiful tune is from Glen Campbell's Sioux Falls, SD, concert that he made for PBS back in 2001. Full orchestra, wonderful arrangement. Available on youtube, but you'll have to find the full concert to see it. "Phoenix" starts around the 13 minute mark. Glen features a number of other Webb favorites in that show, too.
Sir, besides this gorgeous rendition, both Dean martin & Isaac Hayes did this & did it beautifully, their way. On his show, it's one of the rare times Dean really, REALLY sang. -------------Wolfsky9
Wolfsky9 Dean Martin was a better singer than he got credit for, largely because he, for some reason, chose not to apply himself. It's not surprising he was able to have done this song so well.
Always loved Glen Campbell's version, but have to say now that I've listened to Johnny's rendition - many times - am partial to that voice of Johnny's!
I have been a lover of Johnny's music since I was 14 in '69 and my older bro left off a Johnny album when he visited us after a Vietnam tour. Johnny sure can put some special into a song. So talented. Look at the range of things he can do. His album Rewind is full of this kind of talent from one end to the other.
Johnny Rivers had a soft Southern Sound , like a beautiful breeze going through the trees where the lake was near and you could hear the past or present.
THE BEST OF JOHNNY RIVERS, The Tracks of My Tears, By the time i get to phoenix and Look to your Soul. I like all the songs, however these are special.
So many great artists gravitated to this song and interpreted it beautifully, from Glen Campbell to Marvin Gaye to Billy Stewart, The Jackson 5, Isaac Hayes to the Intruders to the Mad Lads, Dean Martin, even old blue eyes and many more. The composition is timeless.
This song still gets to me, every time. I had just turned 20 y/o when I 1st heard it, here in LA, on KDAY. It stayed with me --I couldn't stop thinking about it, & the next day, I bought the album in Hollywood at Wallach's Music City. -----------Wolfsky9
Glen heard this cut, made him cry (homesick) and found Jimmy Webb's name in the album credits, contacted him and the rest is history. Glad I have just heard it too. RIP Glen.
The first time I heard this song, it was in a TV program where "Mister Fisk" used to give english lessons. I was about ten or eleven years old and i love this song ever since
Great song, great performance. In the early 80's, Johnny did a little concert at out high school in Fond du Lac, Wi. I could kick myself for not having the sense to meet this man and tell him how much his music means to me.
Aliás, musica, a verdadeira musica a gente sempre ouvirá.
"By the Time I Get to Phoenix," written by a then unknown Jimmy Webb, was first recorded by Johnny Rivers on his "Changes" album. He thought about releasing it as a single but thought it sounded too much like "Poor Side of Town." He passed on an advance copy of the album to a record producer at Capitol who was working with a new singer named Glen Campbell. Rivers later featured seven Jimmy Webb songs on his "Rewind" album. "Carpet Man" was one of the songs on that album which later became a hit by a group Rivers discovered called The Fifth Dimension. Reply ·
Michael Rankert: I just watched a video interview with Rivers where he said that Glen was his friend, and he thought that it would be a good song for him to do,so he passed it on to Webb. NOT that he had heard about some "new" singer. He also did say that it sounded too much like "Poor Side of Town".
@@ChimeraAZ Thanks for sharing this. I like knowing that Johhny suggested Glen to sing this. I hate to think of singers as competition for each other; these guys were by nature collaborators.
A man's song-- written by a man who understood the loss of real love--the kind that hurts so much it does a man no good. No good at all. What Susan Horton did to Jimmy Webb --the incalculable hurt --inspired this masterpiece. Johnny's voice, Marty Paich's beautiful orchestration with background singers & orchestra, all add up to a heartbreaking classic. Wolfsky9, 68 y/o Now
i just wrote my brother that i'll stick my head out and go on record that JR is the very finest "coverer" of covers. He is THE best understated talent in light of the sensibilities and his very subtle changes to a note here and there always improves the original.
Duff Gordon As true as it is that J.R. covered many songs, he actually is the original artist to record this great Jimmy Webb hit. J.R. recorded it in 1965, Glen Campbell covered it in1967.
+Joe Daniels Sir, JR recorded " Changes " & all the songs for it in late summer of 1966. " Poor Side Of Town" was released in August of '66, & I 1st heard " By The Time", in November of '66, on LA radio station KDAY, & then, on KHJ. Glen Campbell's version, arranged & orchestrated by Al De Lory, came out in Late '67, early '68, followed by " Wichita Lineman". Wolfsky9, 69 y/o
I never realized Rivers sang this. Everybody thinks of Glen Campbell. Why isn't Johnny Rivers in the rock-roll or one of the other Hall of Fames? He is a living legend. I just watched him on Marty Stewart's show on the RFD Network. My God he has had a fantastic career 🙌! I love everything he has ever sang
Johnny Rivers does not sing a song, he makes you share an experience....so talented
So true. I love his songs 🎵.
His songs got me thru some difficult times 👍
He has a good timing of singing the words of a song .
Should be in the hall of fame.
As a Johnny Rivers fan from the 60's, I do not believe anyone ever did it better. It is just simply beautiful.

Mr.😊 Rivers 23 keep going.
Belissimo!!!
Amazing recording. Love Johnny, RIP Glen Campbell.
This man is amazing, there not anything that he can’t sing as always make it sound awesome
BEAUTIFUL
Lindaaaaa
Fabulous. The greatest reddition of the song
This song still gets to me, every time. I had just turned 20 y/o when I 1st heard it, here in LA, on KDAY. It stayed with me --I couldn't stop thinking about it, & the next day, I bought the album in Hollywood at Wallach's Music City. -----------Wolfsky9

Glenn Campbell done a great job too
@@lindaharlow4524 Yup.Glen owns it.
Glen heard this cut, made him cry (homesick) and found Jimmy Webb's name in the album credits, contacted him and the rest is history. Glad I have just heard it too. RIP Glen.

It is an amazing song.Reminds me of my younger days which are long gone,
The first time I heard this song, it was in a TV program where "Mister Fisk" used to give english lessons. I was about ten or eleven years old and i love this song ever since
Wow, first time I have ever heard johnny river's version and it is awesome!!
The fantastic production of Lou Adler, orchestration by Marty Paich , & The Blossoms, with Johnny's smooth baritone.
Maravilhoso amo tempo de música boa 💙💙
Great song, great performance. In the early 80's, Johnny did a little concert at out high school in Fond du Lac, Wi. I could kick myself for not having the sense to meet this man and tell him how much his music means to me.
Great love this arrangement by Johnny Rivers, also love the Glen Campbell arrangement

Aliás, musica, a verdadeira musica a gente sempre ouvirá.
I caught him in Vegas. He was great!

I just watched a video interview with Rivers where he said that Glen was his friend, and he thought that it would be a good song for him to do,so he passed it on to Webb.
J.R. recorded it in 1965, Glen Campbell covered it in1967.
if you want a treat, play dean martin's version. He just oozes STAR
+Duff Gordon I so agree sir. Dean sings this song like no one else could or ever would. Wolfsky9, 69 y/o
