  • “When I first started, I didn't know really what I was doing. I just love plants,” Colleen Belk told us when we visited on a cloudy day in May, gregarious pup Jellybean at her side. Her 40-year journey on rocky land in deer country led to a new career and a garden that evolved in philosophy, design, and lifelong friendships.

I was about to give up ~ Thanks ~ your love of gardening made me feel calmer/better. I am in North TEXAS and triple degrees have scotched everything but I will start again with my Fall plantings.

So inspirational, especially after this beast of a summer when discouragement is high. Thanks 💚

Very heartwarming. Pretty spot on how I feel about my garden. It is still very new but can see the future through your story. Thanks for sharing.

Was this recent? After 2 months of crap weather, no rain, and temps over 102F every day? I see primrose flowers, so this feels like it’s during spring.

Late May. But, in all the years this garden's been around, it's seen worse than this and it always rallies. We just need some rain and cooler weather!!!! Many of her plants are perennials; the annuals switch out anyway.

The failures are really successes.Learning what can't grow is as important as what can.Gardens are our way of creating paradise.

I love going to nurseries and garden centers also, your place is really beautiful your dad was right, but I like your method of planting, not in rows.
