@@mattmatt591 I love 2 strokes, but there's things that you just can't get away with riding a 2 stroke compared to an electric? If electric means the difference between riding and not riding, then I'm going to choose an electric over a 2 stroke just because I need to drive 3 fking hours away and hundreds of kilometres just to ride a 2 stroke FFS! So 2 stroke as much as I love the sound and power, is dropping down my list because it's becoming an unridable machine these days! Not because of the limitations of fear vs balls of steal.....but because you put a target on you by authorities! The one thing that used to terrified me was the thought of being on my Husky CR250 being chased through the bush by police on trail bikes and my bike just snap eating a spark plug on the spot! FFS 2 modern strokes literally destroy spark plugs more than any combustion motor I know of? Oh did I mention I'm a turbo rotary owner as well? Yeah my Husky put my fking 13B to shame on plug eating contest! And I don't mean "fowling a plug" (that would suggest I rode it out of power band and like 18:1 oil ratio or some shit?) nope this animal would fry the spark plug completely dead never ever gonna revive no matter what you do to the plug. I literally had to carry 2 spare spark plugs with me if I went on a trail ride that put me more than 5kms from car and trailer? Fk that haha I started to hate my 2 stroke merely because of how many spark plugs it would munch and consume! It went like a bat out of hell, and I'd flap of the handle bars like a national flag.... .but fk no not again, not a Husky anyway! I was told the amount of plugs it was consuming was normal expect behaviour for a modern day 2 stroke? I told who ever said that that they are Ludacris thinking that's acceptable just because of the power output the bike was making? Also going hotter or colder plugs made no difference other than the length of time between plugs being shorter or longer? The bike would literally melt the connection inside the ceramic/porcelain and no more spark what so ever!

Thats a hall sensor motor. They should go with a qs 138. That's an encoder motor. Encoder motors are more responsive and precise. I have a 2007 klx 450 electric conversion with an 84v 25ah battery and a votol 260 controller paired to a qs 138 motor.
I love going to Hill jame every year. Josh puts out the most amazing event. The most fun you can have with friends and other riders. My bikes always come trashed, lol. Hope to see the ECR crew there next time.
Yeah, as a more casual rider, the Varg is way outa my league in terms of performance and price. So something like the Dust Moto seems to be way more appropriate for a mere mortal such as myself.
The motor needs to be raised up a little to allow the front sprocket to align better with the swingarm pivot. This current position allows the chain to go loose under heavy rear suspension travel. Otherwise they need a more aggressive chain tensioner on the bottom loose side.
if i understand correctly, the front sprocket should actually be slightly lower than the swingarm pivot which gives an anti squat effect under harsh acceleration
Been following since the start. Like the project. Suspension looks pretty soft. That about non-existent chain guide is noisy as hell. Looks pretty quick in mode 3.
As you mention, the specs will more than likely change, but that battery is too small for the power output. That’s only 2.8 watt hours. The new qs165 v3 is interesting motor!
Stoked. + Air cooled + Nice power range + proper MX suspension and wheels - steel-aluminum combo - battery smaller than the Ultra Bee - what you gonna do with that?
Lots of competition coming out Dust so hope you make it. I am a reservation holder but might get a Snow Leopard by Artic Leopard first cause I don't want to wait another year and they are available now. Will be fun to compare them but right now the Leopard shows a much bigger battery so advantage there. Hoping Dust wins in suspension.
Based on this and other videos/details of the build, this is really close to what I'm looking for to trail ride (no track riding). Have owned a couple Surron LBX and I ordered a Stark Varg on day 1 but haven't gone through with the order yet because, if I'm honest, it's not the most appropriate bike for my use case even though I really like and want it. I have fullsize dirtbikes, but my use case for electric dirtbike is a bit different. I'm looking for something slightly smaller than a fullsize bike because it makes slow, tight single track riding more fun and that would be my primary use. I have motorized things for fast, open mountain forest service road riding, though I do also use electric for those trails when on slower paced family rides. I want a Surron Ultra or KTM freeride sized bike but with good 21/18 and great suspension and 50 - 55 miles of range (so I can end our 40 - 45mile rides with 10% - 15% battery rather than totally drained and dead, which is not good for battery and doesn't allow for the unexpected). Guessing even the Dust, with the larger battery option mentioned in other videos, is going to fall short of that last one, unfortunately. Anyway, what is holding me from buying current crop of bikes is not speed/performance/hp. It's lack of a combination of size, great/cushy trail suspension, and range. My Surron LBX suspension beats me up but I don't want to dump $3,000 suspension into that bike as it will still not be what I want. Varg comes the closest, but at the price of it being heavy and very much a full sized bike where an intermediate size would work better on the slow tight stuff. Surron Ultrabee is a good size, but needs aftermarket suspension and battery to be in the running and after $3,000 in suspension and $3,500 in battery, it's more than a Varg. Talaria has promised a Surron Ultra fighter called the Talaria Dragon with 21/18, bigger battery/range (5.2 kWh) but I suspect the suspension will need upgraded. The various Artic Leopard offerings look decent. A Dust being mid-sized, good suspension, brakes and 21/18 from factory is really sounding good. Just need a 5 or 6kW battery option to get the range I need (yes that will push up price and weight, but worth it for me). Having different battery size options available for initial build, as they've mentioned in other videos, is brilliant. Track riders can select the smaller, lighter, lower priced option. Trail riders can select the larger, heavier, pricier, longer-range option right from the factory. No buying aftermarket battery and selling stock battery. Same with wheels, suspension, etc. I dislike having to immediately modify or replace major parts. Much more economical to pay for those right from the factory. I'm following the Dust closely!
The bike looks really good but it seem overpriced in regards to its competitors based on the specs. They list the price as 11k but it only has a 3.5kwh battery which is smaller than the ultra bee. It has less power and way less battery than the new Talaria Dragon which is supposed to be in the range of 8k-9k with KYB forks, and it's only a little over $1,000 less than the Stark Varg which is in a completely different league all together.
Looks like a sweet bike! I think if it were priced to be less expensive than the Stark, it would probably end up winning over a lot of sales. Not sure if this bike is intended to be a direct competitor to it, but those are my initial thoughts.
Enduros? The battery tech is nowhere near the point of leaving sight of the truck. So for now it’s only practical for the motocross track…and even that is debatable.
Nah, bro. Once you get used to using your left hand for the rear brake, it's superior. I swap between ICE and electric (w/ rear hand brake) all the time. It's really not that jarring. But I also ride mountain bikes, so I'm used to hand braking for the rear.... BUT in North America, the brakes are flipped, so my front brake is left, and rear brake is right. But even then I find that going back and forth between ICE, electric moto, and MTB is fine. Your brain adapts pretty quickly to each bike... at least mine does, lol
The video editor should've left that out probably... That's just normal brand new bike brake-in stuff, nothing wrong with the bike just tuning stuff for the bikes maiden ride
Take it into the mountains for a fun weekend. You can crack a beer, sit down and stare at it while your friends with gas bikes ride day after day after day.
2 mins in and it looks sweet but they definitely aren’t the Varg team, they would have been right on it fixing the chain when he mentioned the chain needed tightening but they just bushed it off basically, just deal with it.
I'm a casual off-road motorcyclist, so I'm actually interested in how it performs on the track because I'd like a 'jack of all trades' bike that's sufficient for recreational trail _and_ MX riding.
Keep in mind, this is the first prototype, They need to get the kinks out and its much easier to chase down a pro to get the first two rides in on a track! This thing is designed and built with 100% trail riding in mind. The core group is very open about their builds and trust me, you will see it on the trail in real conditions soon. This thing will not be released without seeing many miles on the trail first.
As an engineer, I have to point out this video is kinda like taking a horse rider to a car rally and asking them suggestions about how to improve cars.
American manufacturer for one. I'm pretty sure it puts out more power as well. I also know for fact the DUST guys won't make KTM's mistake of using a dual battery system (one for the ignition system and one for the motor) which often goes dead, so EVEN when your main battery is charged, the ignition battery is dead ... 😢
I'm curious to see how electric bikes do off-track. I take my YZ250 at least 4 days a week to a riding area that is tight trails, sandy whoops, fast open SxS trails, big sandpits, hill climbing, all different conditions. My bike guzzles gas so idk if this or a Stark Varg would last the 3-4hrs. I'd be pretty pissed if I spent 13K on a bike that can't do what I need it to do. I have 3 gas cans that I hide along my route but can't hide electricity.
The one thing I really hate about my Freeride… the triple clamps! Please, please, please, Dust! Don’t use that POS single pinch top triple clamp. It’s not stout enough for the extra weight of the ebikes. It’s meant for an 85!
One thing these Guys could also do is get their hands aon a Stark and a Kove and. Jeiju E-Bike and compare and learn what seems to be best of all those and look to guide their development , similar to how Stark built their bike and used the latest 450 ICE bikes as the benchmark.
Looks really smart and a lot of fun to ride! It will be interesting to see what situations/riding scenarios it’ll excel on! Is it bigger or smaller in size than the Stark? - Callum
Great to see another competitor under development but it will not see my $ unless it has at least as much range (4 kwh min.) as the UB and a swappable battery especially at the $10K price point. I feel the smaller permanent pack will limit its appeal to off roaders, pretty much impossible to race off road at a competitive level.
And the bike is light and nimble... Almost no riders need more power, the bikes have the power, the rider is nearly always the limiting factor... But now pretty in reserve is not a bad thing though I guess (except maybe for your tire budget)
72 v / 39amp battery/ 25kw motor , umm , really ? 200v/ 40ish amp would be worth the effort cause the first set of numbers in the kWh dept are not promising ; unless electricity is bigger and better in the USA ... Stark Varg meet Surron Ultra Bee springs to mind , so how about a high voltage final version ?
Weight? Could use a few more details. Is it more Surron than Stark? I for one would love something that is more in the Surron size/ weight range but with enough power to ride proper stuff as a grown ass man.
This will be a high quality version or competition to the Surron Ultra Bee. I have a Segway X-260 (Surron Lite Bee). I have spent more money on it than buying the Alpha Stark Varg. That doesn't count the over 100 hours of wrenching to get it where it is today. Anyone wanting an Ultra Bee should seriously consider buying this instead save the wrench time for ride time.
@@lboughto Yep. I am approaching the cost of the Dust Moto with the money I have put into my Surron Light Bee. I was previously considering getting the Ultra, but as you said, it makes more sense to just go for the Dust. And today I joined the First100!
@@jasper_of_puppetsI finally got my Stark Varg makes my KTM Freeride EX-C feel like a kids toy! Its an amazing machine! The future for electric bikes is bright 🌞!
@@lboughto Nice! Can't wait for my Dust Moto! I thought about getting a gas dirt bike, but I'm kinda over the maintenance and mess. Simplicity and ease of use with electric is amazing!
Looking at the website, they say the target specification are for a full size moto, with 26KW/35HP peak power, with a 3.2kWh minimum battery, with a 10K$ MSRP. If you need more, go with Varg. Honestly, this is likely the sweet spot for many existing and new riders out there, the ones not racing-focused who just like to have fun. Can't wait to see the production model. I just wish they can squeeze as much battery as they can.
@@realkidcarter I think this will eat a SurRon's lunch. I've spent time riding with the e bike guys on the ultra bee and it would get hosed by an 85 supermini. The ultra bee is cool, but I actually had a chance to talk to Colin at dust and this video confirms the kw output of the alpha shame's everything out there (except the varg) at this point - especially since the bike looks light and small still!
yeah but thats not the point, its going to cost 10k a varg being way better for 2 or 3k more, and it being more expensive than a 2024 250, its not practical what so ever. it has an 85 rear shock .... and by comparing to surron i was wondering if people could use them the same was as a surron if they were similar price but they are not and i think its over priced and not worth it. get a brand new 250 or a varg for that price@@smithrod63
Put a speaker on it. Give the option of sounding like a 125 or T34 Russian tank. And a smoke chamber to burn a scent to smell like a 73 Husky burning Blendzall
Why go with an 85cc chassis and 20hp ? They should aim at matching a 250f or 150 2T at minimum. There is already a lot of offering for bike/moto e-toys, why make another one when the market is all over the Stark which is left with no competition at the moment ? Definitely more market shares to get on full size bike than this.
Say what you want, I have a 2-stroke and thumpers in the garage but this is for sure the future. It won't repalce gas for awhile but eventually it will/ But, the big thing is the possibility of opening riding areas closer to civilization. Although in certian state shitty states like CA that will never happen. Insurance will be th issue. So time will tell. Heck, with e-bikes only Saddleback could re-open:-) Dream.
The location of the motor too far forward limits the size of the battery, too bad, it's a waste of space for it. L'emplacement du moteur trop vers l'avant limite la grandeur de la batterie, dommage, c'est de la perte de place pour elle.
I feel like the Electric Bike is the pit bike bandwagon of the early 2000s.😂. But it’s encouraging they are having riders test the prototype as most the ones I’ve ridden, I don’t think anybody rode them before they went to production. Or at least anybody that knows how a dirtbike should feel and handle. Most of them have a stink bug feel and the ergonomics are all wrong. Hopefully this bike doesn’t follow that trend but it doesn’t look like it is.

It looks smaller than the stark varg so wonder if its lighter in weight!
Why does everyone test these bikes that they say are clearly not track bikes at the track? Take them to the trails where they are made to shine!
It’s similar to my suron storm. Nice bike
Can't wait!!
Every man ever: Electric motorcycles? Nahh.
Electric POWER TOOLS? F-YEAH!
How would this compare to the Stark Varg?
As an engineer, I have to point out this video is kinda like taking a horse rider to a car rally and asking them suggestions about how to improve cars.
Goin HARD to put Twin Air outta business…
What does this bring to the table over the freeride e-xc?
American manufacturer for one. I'm pretty sure it puts out more power as well. I also know for fact the DUST guys won't make KTM's mistake of using a dual battery system (one for the ignition system and one for the motor) which often goes dead, so EVEN when your main battery is charged, the ignition battery is dead ... 😢
Freeride is 245 lbs and lacks hp. This promises a much higher power to weight ratio. Hope they don't blow it.
@jimji2774 I bet if they achieve the low weight it'll be worth a battery too small to be useful
Generator
Weight? Is it possible to change the battery easily?
Is this the top electric bike ?
Are Y'all going to review the Pro SS?
The one thing I really hate about my Freeride… the triple clamps! Please, please, please, Dust! Don’t use that POS single pinch top triple clamp. It’s not stout enough for the extra weight of the ebikes. It’s meant for an 85!
One thing these Guys could also do is get their hands aon a Stark and a Kove and. Jeiju E-Bike and compare and learn what seems to be best of all those and look to guide their development , similar to how Stark built their bike and used the latest 450 ICE bikes as the benchmark.
That’s sick. You lucky dog!
Josh is an icon
is this aimed to be more like an E-supermini?
Website no work. Already out of business?
One of the founders is my dad. :)
Looks really smart and a lot of fun to ride! It will be interesting to see what situations/riding scenarios it’ll excel on!
Is it bigger or smaller in size than the Stark? - Callum
Looks lite flickable compared to stark, maybe I’m wrong
Looks way better that the "Aardvark"
Great to see another competitor under development but it will not see my $ unless it has at least as much range (4 kwh min.) as the UB and a swappable battery especially at the $10K price point. I feel the smaller permanent pack will limit its appeal to off roaders, pretty much impossible to race off road at a competitive level.
It will be a hot-swappable battery. The website currently says it will have a 3.5 kwh battery.
How much does it weigh?
Did you get a seat height?
Currently at 35.5"
What’s mrsp going to be
SICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Add 20% more top power (to around 40 hp) and this bike is set to go.
25 kw peak output is equivalent to 33.53 hp.
indeed @@longrove5710
And the bike is light and nimble... Almost no riders need more power, the bikes have the power, the rider is nearly always the limiting factor... But now pretty in reserve is not a bad thing though I guess (except maybe for your tire budget)
Yep it's real all right, so are 2 stroke's. What about longevity and durability? That's yet to be seen
Still not clearing the table tops like a 2 stroke? It's a little disappointing cause it definitely looks like it's got the grunt to do it though?
Looks like it needs about 2x the power it currently has.
yep i want one
Tyre size ?
looks clean but doesnt transform into an autobot. 8/10
Any top speed? Max speed?
That depends on gearing…as per all chain driven motorcycles.
Yay!
Tons of this info on their Instagram link. This includes comparisons.
Just my observation, it looks to be underpowered. Watching the Stark is my only comparison.
The Dust Moto Alpha is most likely a 125 two-stroke 250 4-stroke class bike.
I just wish they can squeeze as much battery as they can.
yeah, i dont think it will be practical on the track but i wonder the price and if it can compare to a surron
~ 10 million afrikaanized bees on repeat.
It's going to have 35hp of peak power - or 26kw. And 500nm of torque.
How is better than a Stark Varg?
This ain’t a stark competitor, this is sized to compete with the ktm freeride E and the surron ultrabee, being sub 200lb range.
For Stark competition we will have to wait for the Flux Primo.
why a 19 rear ????
Probably keeps the sprung \ rotating mass much lighter by having a lighter tire ... Less tire sidewall is less weight
19" is for MX. They will have 18" option available for those who prefer trails.
So freeken awesome
The location of the motor too far forward limits the size of the battery, too bad, it's a waste of space for it.
L'emplacement du moteur trop vers l'avant limite la grandeur de la batterie, dommage, c'est de la perte de place pour elle.
It sounds fast... If that makes sense.
Creo estas motos eléctricas están perfectas para aficionados y no para profesionales
Giggling JOSH HILL ..... " .. it's like a real motorcycle .." 🧐
Looks like a qs 138 motor
Sounds like a sixicon controller 🤔
⚡️⚡️⚡️👌👌
I feel like the Electric Bike is the pit bike bandwagon of the early 2000s.😂. But it’s encouraging they are having riders test the prototype as most the ones I’ve ridden, I don’t think anybody rode them before they went to production. Or at least anybody that knows how a dirtbike should feel and handle. Most of them have a stink bug feel and the ergonomics are all wrong. Hopefully this bike doesn’t follow that trend but it doesn’t look like it is.
look like stark.
