Great advice, I was forced out of a job that I loved but finally had to realize your life is made of chapters. That chapter is over and you have to start a new one.

Im at the cusp of reinventing myself. Fired from a mom & pop medical supply business wrongfully. I started walking with a cane a little and my wife diagnosed with cancer so my witch boss fabricated a whole file on me why i was a bad employee so she could fire me.
Now since my wife passed last summer, still have mobility issues, but want to do something, something for me. I spent the last 30 years being a husband raising kids, having two-bit jobs and really just focusing on family.
Wife's passed, kids grown up and gone, im 62 and unable to get another two-bit job .... so!
Where do i go from here ... its wide open, i do have to work at something, but i need to call on my past, pre-marriage, to carve my old age future out of.
    Wish me luck! 😊

we identify ourselves as our profession , our belongings and our success, but we forget what really matter and that is being true to who we are and the people in our life who bring us joy and happiness. Thank you Mr. Martin for being our friend and the honest videos. Wishing you nothing but the best.

I was in the same boat as you at 36 when the job I got trained in and was my vocation got phased out. I went and got 3 jobs after that in the same career but at 42 years old I had enough of it. So I changed to a construction laborer. And spent 20 years doing that through a great union hall and was able to retire at 61. Thanks be to God and I am very appreciative. You are right about identifying as yourself as a man not as your profession. Because once we pass on it’s nice that we can be thought of as the person we were not as the job we did for the needed money to survive. You have a good attitude and you are providing a good service when you deliver things for the elderly who cannot get out. You are a friend to us here and it’s nice listening to you.

I think men really associate and place value on what they do for work as being who they are. When that’s gone many really struggle and some go to very dark places. You are grinding now my friend. If you actually honestly can derive pleasure from what you must do, well that’s fantastic. Much respect and I am happy for you.

I got fired at 49 from a civil service job on trumped up political charges. I sued and won some money, back benefits and may job back. I then retired at 62. More people may be getting fired because of the incredibly idiotic Trump tariffs. I hate that Trump is trying to drive a wedge between the USA and Canada. I love my Canadian brothers and sisters.

  • @HippieDreamsAllNight

Great message, Martin! Your story can resonate with the young, the old, and everyone in between. It's an example of "When you get knocked down, you get back up, brush yourself off, take another step, and you keep on going." And so very true that a job does not define you! It's all about how we treat others, about trying to make the world a little kinder, and a better place for those who come after us.
P.S. I sincerely apologize to all our wonderful friends and neighbors in Canada and Mexico for the tariff situation. I hope one day the U.S. can rise above the current bullying posture and get to a place where we treat our friends and allies with respect and compassion. ☮

Great advice Martin. I wasn’t forced out, but I needed to get out of my job at age 55. And boy are you right about ageism. I’m very, very lucky that I found another position. I still have a lot of identity around my job (a teacher) but I agree that probably needs to shift. When I end up retiring, that identity will be gone.
